my father was a true treetop flyer, he flew three tours in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot, was shot down and after returning to the us he acquired his commercial pilots license. He was killed last week in a freak car accident and we read the words of the of this song as a tribute to him as it was one of his favorite songs. rest in peace to my "treetop flyer"!!!!
Anybody know what guitar he's playing? ... I like the version done on his "Stephen Stills Just Roll Tape" album. Almost sounds like he's playing a resonator on that recording.
@weirdotis How come many top professionals don't seem to be able to get a decent acoustic sound live like this without an annoying top-end plasticky sound. The further back you go, it seems, the better at recreating a natural sound live they are - and at that stage of technological development! Ah go figure. ("Can't get good tone... take out on world...")
@Boylieboyle I agree. It really depends on the pickup you use and how well it's adjusted. I'm old school, so I still prefer to mic my acoustic when I play out. I think Neil Young does have a good sound with the pickups he uses on his acoustics, though.

It's weird that many years later Tom Petty did a very...similar...song called "Bootleg Flyer" on the Mudcrutch album. Wonder if Stills ever heard it and what he thought.
There are brilliant guitarists, there are guitarists that play from the heart and there are guitarists who have bucket loads of style but there are not many that possess all three. Stephen Stills is one of the few. What a class act !!
Steven is as good as there is, recognizable personal style, a spectacular guitar player. In a small class with Richard Thompson, and very few others. Got style.
Gotta love the controlled pop - that poppin' (aided by that acoustic pickup system). Very nice acoustic live sound - so present. Love his vocals - another Southern voice with little tupelo honey.
The song is sensational, the guitar work typically brilliant, and the singing perfectly acceptable. Stills has to be the most underrated rock star in history. One of a very small number of musical giants.
Just fabulous! My favourite Stephen Stills - along with Helplessly Hoping. Singing this live, Stills performance is masterful. Great guitarwork and perfect vocals. I never get tired listening to this version that must be the definitive version.
The master at work, Stephen Stills has more Gold Records to his credit than most modern artists combined & yet he always chooses to sing about that single person or group that lives outside what is normal for the rest of the world. Rock on Bro, there are many of us that will always have your back ~sjhgm1~
This guy is a great guitar player! I'm sorry that the current tour won't be with Stills--that's a shame! Well, thanks for uploading this great performance--I have 3 DVD's with these guys, but I don't have this great one! Peace to all, BobbyK

@Radiokaos420 Yes! Another reason to be grateful for Stephen Stills! RLaM is truly an amazing gifted singer who I love even more because he was inspired by Stills!

@sherrillwallace Stills was born in Dallas Texas. He was a Navy brat and spent time in sever locations of the south east US, as well as In South America - Panama I think. I always thought he got his Ass - hole personality from Dallas ( I was born there, ha, ha). I can't think of a better acoustic guitarist ever. I wish he would stick to it.

everyone makes their own way in this thing called life.
stephen has one of the biggest egos on the planet and a lot of faults.
which made it possible at the age of 24 to engineer csn's first album.
thanks to a turkish, muslim by birth, immigrant, ahmet ertegan, president of atlantic records who stood behind him with the money.
listen to it carefully, stills directs the show and plays most of the music.
amazing, incomparable stuff.
