I think it suffers from being ahead of the curve and fearful producers. Thor, being a hero of Nordic mythology, isn't the property of Marvel even though his modern day popularity is linked to the comics and now, feature film. Had it been say 2005, Marvel Studios would have gotten behind the idea, or had a better chance to market it that way. I am a fan the myth as well, and concede the alterations to the appeal to the target market. I'm sure the Belt, the Gauntlets, and the rest would come.

@WhiteKnitter In one of the Nordic myths, Thor is stripped of his immortality and sent to Asgard to learn a lesson. We thought the best way to show this would be to have him reduced to a 12 year old boy. It also makes the relate ability as a boys action show go way up.....Or at least that's what we thought at the time. Since it was never picked up, maybe we were wrong.
To your credit, or maybe not, I think the reason this probably didn't get picked up was because the action was pretty lackluster ESPECIALLY for a cartoon conceived around 1997 and the scenery and backgrounds looked completely uninspired. At least that's the way it seemed in this clip.
No offense though. I like some of your more recent stuff like the Adam and Eve thing.

@SethKearsley You mean Midgard, also I don't remember reading in where Thor is stripped of is immortality. There a story in where Thor loses to a Giant.
@slicingwater yeah....Midgard....at least I didn't say earth....there is a legend of Thor being stripped of his power. I'm the Director. The writer did all the research. I just made the thing happen. Great to see it's ripe with controversy for the fans of the Mythology.
I find a lot of faults in this video. i guess i am here to speak for everyone, use or make your own sound effects. these sound clips have been used too often. those infamous scream and lion roar have been used half a million times. inspire yourself. be creative.
@SethKearsley Your skills are quite remarkable, though I don't actually support this image of Thor. I doubt he is an actionhero. Imo, Marvel's Thor has nothing to do with the norse deity, except for some names.
@KingCharltonHeston Yup. He financed it and that's how we were able to get guys like Mike Mignola, Glenn Murikami and Dave Johnson to work on it. Funny thing about your name, at one point we had Charlton Heston signed on to do the voice of Odin. Got to go to his house and see his collection of guns and wall of original art from every costume designer on every movie he was in. So...yeah...any cheese that Fabio might have brought was outweighed by what his backing enabled us to do.
Unique idea making him turn into a kid as a mortal and then the lighting comes down and he goes into his God form. It's all like, "SHAZAM" and suddenly, he's Thor. Brilliant!
@TheKivanchly Says who? The one who believes in another god? I believe what I believe, you believe what you believe. Do I call you an idiot for believing in something else? It may be news to you, but there is something out there known as "tolerance".
Think about how many wars have started because of people like you, claiming other people are wrong, their gods don't exist, we will kill them in the name of our almighty god!
If you ask me, this is just stupid. Let each other alone.
@MVGkaiser There's actually a story in the Nordic Mythology where Thor gets too arrogant and thinks he can take on Odin so Odin strips him of his power and sends him to live on Midgard for a while to humble him up. Since we were making a show for 10-12 year olds, seems like a no brainer to make him the age of the target demo. We were aware of Shazam but didn't feel like, aside from that one thing, the stories really had much else in common.
@TheBipolarGemini No, nothing is up at all. You can draw some similarities from almost any two humans. You are thinking too much about those two... or is it not enough.. either war = fail.
Wait.....you could afford Mignola and your pitch has generic SFX track screams? I think it woulda been funnier if you made Thor look older and more mature.....long beard, crow's feet. ...that way the little kid thing'd be much funnier.
@PainMonkey We didn't pay for Mignola. It was done as a favor. We also had Dave Johnson(Character designer from Ben 10) design the logo and Glen Murakami (Teen Titans) do character design. Everyone worked for free, including the sound designer. There's only so much you can ask of people who are working for free. The only people who were paid were the Korean animators. Still....for '98 to have digital Ink & Paint and Camera was pretty good. It is what it is now.
@hpotterfrk The creatures were all designed by Mike Mignola, who also did design work for Disney's Atlantis and I believe did some design work for some of their other features around the same time.
I've gotta ask you something. If Thor wasn't such a well known comic character in Marvel Comics, would you have attempted to make a cartoon based on Thor? I mean, by making a cartoon based on Thor, you know a lot of people are going to watch it just because they know of Thor through Marvel Comics and of course, there isn't a thing Marvel can do about it because Thor's up for grabs. I mean, even DC Comics could do Thor if they wanted too. Now, that would be interesting ;-)
@krone900 I had just finished a show based on Egyptian mythology so I was really into exploring different Mythologies at the time. This was also done when the Hercules live action show was on an the Hercules animated feature was also out. The Nordic Mythology is pretty interesting and the writer had a good take and there were partners in place who were going to finance this piece. Would I have chosen Thor otherwise? Probably not. I don't regret having done it though.
@tereuo There is actually a story in the nordic Mythology where Odin strips Thor of his Immortality and sends him to Midgard because of his arrogance since we were making a show for kids, it's a natural next step to have him not only lose his God like immortality but also his God like physique. We were all well aware of Shazam when doing this but were comfortable with it given the fact that the Nordic legend we based the premise on predates anything from DC by a couple centuries.
@Berghie I'm actually working on something with the same writer right now. It's a development project so I don't know when it might be able to be shown but someday.
I love seeing behind the scenes stuff. Are you still interested in making this series? I miss epic mythology-based shows like Hercules and Xena, used to give me so much joy as a kid XD. Speaking of which, you think you can share some behind the scenes stuff for Mummies? It's a childhood fav and I'd love to see any you have to share.
@ZephyrinSkies When we did this, all of those shows were still huge. We might still do some epic mythology based something but it will be different than this. Mummies was my first job as a Producer/Director. I was 23 when it started. Talk about a huge leap of faith on their part that I could actually pull it off. The story editors were the same as the X-Men animated series that was on back then. We all tried to make it something a little extra. It's nice to know people still like it.
@SethKearsley Thanks for replying. That'd be awesome if you did get to do it. That is pretty young, not much older than me and I'm not out of college yet. There are people who remember it, especially people like me who like to rewatch nostalgic shows.
@SethKearsley For what it's worth, there's even a small group of active fans online. Was just watching it and was pleasantly surprised that I could still enjoy it. Some parts are still kiddy, but the main characters (& I really love the designs for their armor) are really fun and I love the humor. There were even moments in the writing that I thought really shone too. Was wishing you got to do more with the series when I reached the end of it.
WOW for a momment I thought I've seen it before but it was Space Ace. Some scenes look so much like it.Was this not green lighted exclusively because of Marvel?
Also dude that kid so looks like Presley from Mummies Alive.
I was born in late 80s so I felt the need of the 80s animations quality like Thundercats and Dinosaucers in mid/late 90s but they all looked square, Mummies alive had a great detailed animation.
It's good to see you guys carried it on a little bit of it into the new genration.
Hey bro im thinking if you change the Hair color red and his name to DONAR call it DONAR THE MIGHTY! You could make it happen, dont let all your great character concepts go to waste, man Ive Drawn so many bad ass characters but im too poor to pitch them what do I do? Or who can I pitch them to?
@Alairic Maybe..... but the partnership that put this together is no more so pursuing something too close to this wouldn't be wise. With your own characters, I would just look for ways to get your stuff out there. YouTube and Deviantart are both great for that. Start small. Sell stickers with you characters and then t-Shirts and then grow from there. Don't waste time pitching. It's frustrating and annoying and you don't need permission to do your thing.
@halfdragonhal Marvel only owns the rights to their own interpretation of the Nordic mythology but they mythology is public domain. They only way they could sue is if we were to use some of their imagery.
That was great, wish I could have seen this. It would have come put right when I hit grade school ;( I heard mentions of Thor for so long I decided to find the real stuff and learned all of Norse Mythology, now I read the comic. This could have given me about a decade head start. ;(
just brought a thor vs hulk so yes you might have a problem but this is very good work thor is a part of myth marvel cannot own that, dc comics has a hercules that shows up to get stomped by wonder woman you might have to make a few changes but I sure would like to see more.
100% correct....BUT....it's hard enough to get an executive to wrap their head around the fact that Thor wasn't created by Marvel. Harder still to educate them about nordic mythology while trying to sell them a show.
@ThatguyDusty That is true. The three realms of northern mythologi is Asgard, home of the aesirs, Midgard, home of men, and Outgard, home of the giants. These three realms are positioned on different places on the world tree Yggdrasil
This may be me being an out of touch old fuck, but it seems that since the early 90's animated action shows aimed primarily at boys have dried up. Where are the He-Man/Thundercats/Real Ghostbusters equivalents for todays youth??
This looks like it could have filled that role nicely, shame.
Looked like a classic 90's cartoon. man sucks ass to have to pay more on cable to see those great oldies cause the crap thats out now a days is trash and the good ones are hard to find
Since when did the creatures from underworld fight with the the middleworldians

I mean, by making a cartoon based on Thor, you know a lot of people are going to watch it just because they know of Thor through Marvel Comics and of course, there isn't a thing Marvel can do about it because Thor's up for grabs. I mean, even DC Comics could do Thor if they wanted too. Now, that would be interesting ;-)
krone900 10 months ago
@krone900 I had just finished a show based on Egyptian mythology so I was really into exploring different Mythologies at the time. This was also done when the Hercules live action show was on an the Hercules animated feature was also out. The Nordic Mythology is pretty interesting and the writer had a good take and there were partners in place who were going to finance this piece. Would I have chosen Thor otherwise? Probably not. I don't regret having done it though.

I hope this comes to fruition. It looks really good.

im shocked you didnt see Thor shoutin SHAZAM!!!
tereuo 1 year ago
@tereuo There is actually a story in the nordic Mythology where Odin strips Thor of his Immortality and sends him to Midgard because of his arrogance since we were making a show for kids, it's a natural next step to have him not only lose his God like immortality but also his God like physique. We were all well aware of Shazam when doing this but were comfortable with it given the fact that the Nordic legend we based the premise on predates anything from DC by a couple centuries.
SethKearsley 1 year ago
@SethKearsley either way. you think you would of gone teenager or maybe a handicap kid like in the comics when he is a handicap doctor
tereuo 1 year ago
Wow, indeed impressive work here mate, would actually be awesome if that came to life! or just something by your "team" if you want to call it that!

ZephyrinSkies 1 year ago
@ZephyrinSkies When we did this, all of those shows were still huge. We might still do some epic mythology based something but it will be different than this. Mummies was my first job as a Producer/Director. I was 23 when it started. Talk about a huge leap of faith on their part that I could actually pull it off. The story editors were the same as the X-Men animated series that was on back then. We all tried to make it something a little extra. It's nice to know people still like it.
SethKearsley 1 year ago
@SethKearsley Thanks for replying. That'd be awesome if you did get to do it. That is pretty young, not much older than me and I'm not out of college yet. There are people who remember it, especially people like me who like to rewatch nostalgic shows.
ZephyrinSkies 1 year ago
@SethKearsley For what it's worth, there's even a small group of active fans online. Was just watching it and was pleasantly surprised that I could still enjoy it. Some parts are still kiddy, but the main characters (& I really love the designs for their armor) are really fun and I love the humor. There were even moments in the writing that I thought really shone too. Was wishing you got to do more with the series when I reached the end of it.
ZephyrinSkies 1 year ago
WOW for a momment I thought I've seen it before but it was Space Ace. Some scenes look so much like it.Was this not green lighted exclusively because of Marvel?
Also dude that kid so looks like Presley from Mummies Alive.
I was born in late 80s so I felt the need of the 80s animations quality like Thundercats and Dinosaucers in mid/late 90s but they all looked square, Mummies alive had a great detailed animation.
It's good to see you guys carried it on a little bit of it into the new genration.
BurnRoddy 1 year ago
@BurnRoddy I did this literally right after finishing Mummies Alive so I'm not surprised there's similarity in the character design.

Alairic 1 year ago
@Alairic Maybe..... but the partnership that put this together is no more so pursuing something too close to this wouldn't be wise. With your own characters, I would just look for ways to get your stuff out there. YouTube and Deviantart are both great for that. Start small. Sell stickers with you characters and then t-Shirts and then grow from there. Don't waste time pitching. It's frustrating and annoying and you don't need permission to do your thing.

Ugh, interlacing. Also, some of the sounds sound familiar to me, maybe from a game that bought the same canned sounds?

marvel going to sue some one
halfdragonhal 1 year ago
@halfdragonhal Marvel only owns the rights to their own interpretation of the Nordic mythology but they mythology is public domain. They only way they could sue is if we were to use some of their imagery.
SethKearsley 1 year ago
@SethKearsley i know that but look at the tow and the tow storys tell me that thay really dont have a case .
halfdragonhal 1 year ago
@SethKearsley Well, Marvel thor is blonde. Nordic Thor is a red head and has an epic beard.
JohnTraviss 1 year ago
That was great, wish I could have seen this. It would have come put right when I hit grade school ;( I heard mentions of Thor for so long I decided to find the real stuff and learned all of Norse Mythology, now I read the comic. This could have given me about a decade head start. ;(

just brought a thor vs hulk so yes you might have a problem but this is very good work thor is a part of myth marvel cannot own that, dc comics has a hercules that shows up to get stomped by wonder woman you might have to make a few changes but I sure would like to see more.

Shouldn't he be banished to Midgard? Earth is non-existant to Nordic tongues.
ThatguyDusty 2 years ago 12
100% correct....BUT....it's hard enough to get an executive to wrap their head around the fact that Thor wasn't created by Marvel. Harder still to educate them about nordic mythology while trying to sell them a show.
SethKearsley 2 years ago
Earth (The word we use today) and Midgård is the same place, just different words.
bamsebomsen 1 year ago
@ThatguyDusty Strategic decision to say Earth instead of Midgard to pre-empt having to educate executives on nordic mythology....but you're right.
SethKearsley 1 year ago
@ThatguyDusty That is true. The three realms of northern mythologi is Asgard, home of the aesirs, Midgard, home of men, and Outgard, home of the giants. These three realms are positioned on different places on the world tree Yggdrasil

Looks like it would have been fun.
This may be me being an out of touch old fuck, but it seems that since the early 90's animated action shows aimed primarily at boys have dried up. Where are the He-Man/Thundercats/Real Ghostbusters equivalents for todays youth??
This looks like it could have filled that role nicely, shame.

Quality work. I'm thinking it might've worked better if you went with Thor as a redhead like he is in the myth.
