@haus05 He's playing in an "open G" kind of tuning. Assuming your guitar is in standard tuning, you just drop the A string DOWN (not up) to a G. Then it allows you to play some chords open rather than playing all of the notes.

Sorry folks... The book I learned this from was burned... along with my friends house. Seriously. The key is the tuning... Drop the A to G (similar to the way you'd drop the E to D)... you should be able to figure out a lot from that.
