A strange fact was that - officially at least - their bodies were not found. And last but not least, long after the war, a strange story popped up, when two Gallipoli veterans declared they had seen the Norfolks march into a strange cloud, that engulfed them, then lifted and drifted away, leaving nobody behind.
This is so sad. I honestly can't understand why these tactics were used? Just go over the top and walk/run to your death? WHY?! It honestly seems that the commanders/officers of these soldiers just used them like it was a game? I really don't understand? Was going around (or flanking) not in the minds of these flipping geniuses who made these calls? Such a waste of life. This was repeated so many times, blow the whistle and go over the top... For what? Unnecessary deaths... So sad.
@TheMainMayn As the historian AJP Taylor wrote the war was too big and too complex for everyone. When they realised it was pointless the politicians were afraid to stop it without "victory" because they would be blamed. Britain never had a large army before 1914 and the Generals just did not know how to handle one. They learned but it took 2 years which is about the usual time it takes to build a competent army from scratch.
The American general Stillwell said the British army had the best soldiers he had ever seen and the worst soldiers he had ever seen. the best were the sergeant- majors while the worst where the officers
@diamondseredydalson There was a Reverend in the movie, one "Reverend Pierrepoint" who discovered a mass grave of whom he presumed were the men. They were all shot in the head and he didn't tell anyone for a long time to protect the feelings of the families of the deceased. His claim has not been fully verified but it's not impossible as The Turks had executed prisoners before.
worst thing is that the commonwealth and french lost so many honourable men yet helped the turks 7 years later against their former allies the greeks.such was their honour?
@Babis0sougias The French yes, and the Russian Soviets more helped the Turks more than anyone. The British Government was getting ready to join the Greeks but the British and Commonwealth people would not allow another major war so soon after WW!.
@freebeerfordworkers maybe you are right,i admit it is the first time i hear of this, yet what happened cannot be reversed.no support was givven to the greeks and the butcherers of that part of our planet got their chance to build up a nation run by terrorism once more.(see armenian genocide,Asia Minor Catastrophe etc)plus modern society structure in kemal's fckn Turkey.
My great-grandfather served in Serbian 1st Army Timok Divison he was on Macedonian front together with English and French troops, he had a good English friend whom he said that he was from Sandringham company, he was wounded before they engaged the Turks, after that he was reassigned, I just want to say thank you all British and French soldiers who fought together with my Serbs for freedom!
@03nj my great-grandfather was in the greek pontian rebel army in turkey also fighting against the turks for the freedom of the greeks on the black sea. respect to whoever fought alongside these men against the turks
Yes my Greek brother Serbia and Greece have always been allies, and we kicked Turkey ass in first Balkan war and Bulgarian ass in second balkan war and World War I
World War One was the most fierce war of all wars. It was so bloody, The Battle of Somme is the bloddiest war in history. WW1 was a war fought with deadly weapons and adiquate tactics resulting in millions of death. Altrough WW2 has more casualties. There was more casualties in each battle of WW1
@SMGJohn The Battle of Somme wasn't a 'war'. And no, there WERE battles in WW2 that had casualties exceeding those of WW1 - Stalingrad, Leningrad, Kursk, to name a few. It's already accepted by the majority of historians that no war front has ever exceeded the Eastern Front of WW2 in casualties, intensity of fighting and damage.
@88Scatter No, Battle of Somme was the bloodiest in terms of destruction and people who died per attack. The place was constantly bombed for 2 years. I don't see any place in WW2 that was bombed 24/7 in 2 years straight
@SMGJohn Leningrad beats out the Somme in being bombed for a long period of time - 872 days, from September 1941 to January 1944. That's over two years and it has been accepted as the most lethal and longest area under siege and bombardment.
@SMGJohn It doesn't matter if it was bombed 24/7 or not. The fact that the siege lasted for over 2 years with Soviet casualties alone in the millions and possibly hundreds of thousands of Germans and their allies is more than enough to show it is the deadliest siege and bombardment of history.
@88Scatter I think Somme was more deadly. Soviet casualties in Leningrad was just 1 million with the Germans and the Fins not far from the million casualties either. And one million dead civilians.
@SMGJohn Somme casualties in total add up to a little over a million or so - of those killed/missing, the number is roughly 300~350 thousand or so. Soviet deaths and MIA in Leningrad were roughly 1 million alone, followed by another 2 million that were wounded and sick - the German and Finnish casualties vary but combined, would reach in the hundreds of thousands at the least.
@88Scatter The amount of casualties doesn't count. It's how many that was killed over time, people where butchered in Somme, in Leningrad it was different. It was a long battle and it was mainly fought in the city of Leningrad. Somme being an open landscape where troops where commonly butchered by machineguns, artillery and later in the war. Flamethrowers, airplanes. British Trench forces with shotguns and German assault troops equipped with SMG (MP18) and the infamous gas attacks
@SMGJohn Yes, they do matter as it totals the entire count. Regardless if it was a long battle or not, the entire city and the surrounding areas were completely leveled - and that goes to say, plenty of troops and civilians there were massacred by MGs, artillery and aerial bombing along with widespread starvation, succumbing to wounds and disease. Newsflash - the MP18 wasn't introduced until 1918 - meaning it entered service in that year - long after the Battle of the Somme.
@88Scatter Battle of Somme 1916 to 1918. The MP18 saw major service at the end of the battle and WW1 it contributed to massive allied casualties at the end of the war. And it was like a walking machinegun the 9mm wasn't a big round but soldiers where just walking in clothes without any kind of armor
@SMGJohn The Battle of the Somme lasted from July 1st to November 18th, 1916, specifically at the Somme River. MP18s didn't see widespread service as only 35,000 were produced in total from 1918 to the early 1920s (and funnily enough, only 5,000 to 10,000 were built and used during 1918 itself) That's not really a massive number compared to how many German soldiers were still fighting at the final months of the war. Only select troops had the MP18s - mainly the Strummtruppen companies.
@SMGJohn I believe you're referring to the First and Second Battle of the Somme 1918, which in any case, is a separate battle from the one that occurred in 1916 since no battle there occurred in 1917. If you're muddling all three of them into one battle, hell, I might as well say that the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Battle of Kharkov are just one big battle in one when they were actually separate battles themselves, going by the timeline and dates.
@boxing238 I was not being the least disrespectful to the New Zeakland contingent of the ANZACs. I was merely pointing out to my fellow countrymen who seem to think Gallipoli was all about the ANZACs (and I suspect that applies to a lot of Kiwis as well) that they were a small minority in terms of absolute numbers of participating troops and casualties (8700 Austrlian dead). I suspect very few Australians are aware that the French took part at all. Don't forget the Indians and Newfoundlanders.
Yes The9thgeneral it is about the Gallipoli. The Sandringhams were a company of men from the Sandringham estate of King George V. My great uncle was with the ANZACS at Gallipoli, but it should not be forgotten that far more British and more Frenchmen died in that campaign than Australians.
@pshehan1 the country who had the worst cassualties in gallipoli was new zealand 2,721 new zealanders died. one in every four new zealanders who landed on the peninsula died new zealands population at the time was only 1 million to say it should not be forgotten that far more british and frenchmen died in that campaign is very disrespectful australia had the second worst cassualties
yeah the turks executed them all, a bunch of Australians on the first day actualy made it to the objective but were wiped out looking over the straights ,Charlse Bean the historian found thier bones in 1922 ,no one thought anyone had made it past the beachhead, they ran out of ammo and were killed, though the same turks who saved the day were wiped out in lone pine, and like the Australian died to the last man, though some historians claim the Aussies committed a war crime as 3000men all died.
This was filmed in Spain. I was one of the military advisers employed by KHAKI DEVIL , (google them ) I am center screen at 27 seconds and enter left screen at 1.20. this brings back some good memories :-)

@Taccom54 They do not think so, they've located the mass grave and it consisted of corpses of some brittish commonwealth soldiers who they believe is the Sandringham Company. The discovery that indicates that they were executed is that they all were shot in the head.
Me aswell, also hoped that they fought to the last man instead of letting themselves getting captured by the enemy... Seems like it's wrong...
"I say chaps lets line up and charge those machine guns head on. Ill blow the whistle very loud so that every one can hear". "I say sir it appears they new we where coming. do you think they heard the whistle" "what.... nonsense line a few thousand more up and well try it again just to make sure". "Jolly good idea sir"
This is possibly the most tragic secene in any war movie as the fate of these men is utterly inevitable and yet they still advance slowly towards oblivion.
@seanpieper Pretty much the same as the endings of Gallipoli and The Trench. All were tragic because of the general staff throwing away the lives of thousands of their men.
They died for nothing you shits..Generals ordering men to die in rows..How stupid can you get..Give up your life to be riddled to death??? They are gone forever..Only one chance at life and they take an order from AN UPPER CLASS PRICK WHO WILL NEVER SEE BATTLE PROBABLY...RULE BRITTANIA SOME STUPID YANK SAID..WHAT ABOUT ALL THE INNOCENTS THAT DIED AT THE HANDS OF THE BRITS??? @irishmckiddo Imperialist Scum? The British helped free 1/2 of the entire planet from occupation, And has been the Worlds police ever since. I take it your a catholic? Or should i say Cat-O-Holic!
@martynrobin121 Look at the dudes name... If he is really Irish, and if your really British you should know how he feels. Same goes for Scots. The Brits took thier land and tried to claim it their own. Would you want your land to be taken?
@hermanislose The Scots are British you idiot. And, in fact, most of the British people who settled the north of Ireland were Scots. You don't know much do you.
@MrIvailo93 macedonians were and are greek people, and of course there's no greatness for bulgars and the ''macedonians'' that all of you have created into your heads
@TheRamason Now they are but its different back then. they fought to be independent but in the end they were like If you can't beat Join them. And then became and still to this day the best fighters for the British Force
@hermanislose Have you ever heard of a nation of 60 million people called the English (you may at least be familiar with their language)? And are you confusing them with the British? And if the Scots were/are such amazing soldiers, how come they were beaten by them?
@TheRamason First off war isn't all about fighting...Thats kinda really easy to know...Never said anything about the English all together, so you statement on that is completely invalid.
@hermanislose HA HA, YOU FUCKING IDIOT! You dont even know what Britain means! Scotlant is part of Britain.
Why dont you learn history? The Irish in the past have been involved in invasion of British mainland & horrific conflicts. The British always have been involved in occupation/conflicts in Ireland, Alot has happend over the thousands of years. SHIT HAPPENS THATS LIFE!
@martynrobin121 Why do you think I said it was a free nation. WAS! Do you understand grammer? What ever happened to your QUEEN'S ENGLISH. And alos that why Iris/Scottish fighters will always be better than Brits. Yes there the exception but they know what it means to fight for FREEDOM.
A superb, very moving film. The scene at the end, where you see them behind the lines is also very well done, and very dramatic. Really good acting all round.
A strange fact was that - officially at least - their bodies were not found.

@hermanislose um scots are Brits lol I think you meant English. You must be an American

The Brits are the English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish. Go on, rage over a simple fact.

This is one of the only 2 films that has made me physically cry as a 22 yr old man. The other being 'Tae Guk Gi'
I'd love to find the full ost for this :)

Why can't we aim our guns at the powers on Earth, instead of one another? Are we that pathetic, we need masters to show us how to breathe?

You don't even have to see the whole movie to just watch this scene and cry manly tears.

A superb, very moving film. The scene at the end, where you see them behind the lines is also very well done, and very dramatic. Really good acting all round.

@emexlondaxe78 I saw this on Netflix streaming, but they took it down a long time ago. There's no place to see it for free. You have to buy it.
