Thank you SO much. Out of all the DOSBox tutorials to load and play games this is the only one that has worked for me, and you explained it so clearly. THANK YOU!
I have a question that I havnt been able to find the answere for anywhere.
Im trying to play an old point and click game called Harvester, Im running it from iso's. I can get it mounted fine, but when I go to install the game I select the installation type (ive tried it with both).
I get to the part of the install which asks for the drive destination and directory, (the defult in the box is C:\HARVEST) but it just gives me a messege that says, invalid drive specification. And it wont install.
can u download batman forever from that same site and tell me how to install it and play it? its diff from this game and i cant get it work thanks so much! ( :

hey to change my joystick keys that I have to play well in the tomb raider game I'm playing with dosbox but not know how to configure the buttons and joystick buttons also need your help and I need to know how I can play with full screen is that I play well and I get all blurred aver if you can help
@oxigeno23able For full screen you can press alt+enter, and for you joystick, I know DosBox supports it, but you're going to have to go look it up on their main site, since I can't remember how to do it. You have to emulate with another joystick and various other things, I'm sure they explain it well on their main site.
@dmanbiker but when I'm going to set him on ctrl + F1 and I get several things there but I do not understand him and I add in the button I want to be the one I use?
@oxigeno23able I think it gives you a list of joysticks to emulate and you choose one of those. Like I said, I haven't done this in a while, and can't remember exactly how (to configure a joystick for dosbox that is).
I have the game "The Dark Queen Of Krynn" from abandonia which wants me to insert disks 1-3 into the floppy drive for the installation. There are 3 folders named Disk1, Disk2, Disk3 in the zipfile.
How can I create a virtual floppy B: and load the Disk(1-3) folders in it?
Nope, it shouldn't work, however if you're under windows XP you may just be able to run it in compatibility mode, or find a patch that lets you run it better under a newer OS.
OK, thanks for help, i try find some kind of patch, re1 works on xp i think. I been trying to get old REs to download old REs and get them work, but it seems impossible. Only RE3 working so far.
I tried to get resident evil 1 to work that way, but when i did that last thing it said "this program cannot be run in DOS mode." anything i can do to make it work?
If someone got re1 work some way, please tell. Btw i got vista.
That means it's not compatible with MS-DOS, so you'll have to run it in compatibility mode, or get some sort of Vista Patch. You'll have to check the internet for that. I'm not experienced with Resident Evil 1.
Jesus man ty for teaching me this... i always wanted to play Redneck Rampage! Problem is.. the game is kinda choppy the sound is off, but i am glad i made it working!
hey i was wondering if you could anwser my question i have been google searching for the better part of 3 days with no luck lol
im playing through blood again for old times sake and it requires like around 38 bytes of memory, and dosbox's default is 14, not sure how to change it. wtf!? i found a link that told me to modify my config file (cant remember what the name is) for dosbox, but there isnt one strangely enough lol. thanks for the help if you anwser!
I assume by memory, you mean that it says you don't have enough freespace to install your game. A lot of older games read GB on a HDD as MB, so if you have 50GB of space left, and your game requires say 100 MB it will say that you don't have enough space.
To fix this, when you mount your drive initially at the end put "-freesize 1000"
So for example if you were mounting a folder called dosgames you would type.
i think it means memory as in ram, the error message is word for word as follows:
"14mb memory used
LOW MEMORY WARNING: Blood requires 23mb of free memory.
You may experience problems while running Blood with low memory.
Press a key to enter Blood..."
i read that dosbox has it set to 14 mb by default and blood was a very intensive game for its time, the build engine being heavily modified for it. Im pretty sure its posaible to make dosbox emulate more ram, just cant figure out how.
Alright, yep that's definitely referring to RAM. I'll go find a solution for you, and PM it to you. It's probably in the config file, or it's a command like the HDD space one.
about the installation I installed Warcraft orcs and humans (OR, WARCRAFT 1) and it said I installed it all.
I ran it in dosbox and it worked; If I ran it on windows it would not have music and there were other features that didn't work.
But then the big problem with Dosbox happened: When I clicked play it said insert WarCraft CD but it was already in and I clicked okay but it wouldn't work PLEASE HELP WHAT AM I DOING WRONG
I don't know if my previous comment posted, but there's a link in the video description to my other upload that shows you how to run games off CDs in dosbox.
right, i get to the cd part, and type cd dosgame (i also named my file that btw) which is in my c: local disc and then it just says " unable to change to 'dosgame'" any ideas why this is happening?
You can also mount the actual folder as well, and make it less confusing by using
"mount c c:\dosgame"
Then it would treat your dosgame folder as your virtual hard drive, so you wouldn't need to worry about using CD every time, and would have a more isolated mounting location.
I think you can use "/" as well. I think it reads it as universal. Other than that, I think you'll need to figure it out. Can you copy and paste the symbols in?
I'm not sure how do fix it then, other than buying another keyboard. I'm not familiar with logitech Wave keyboards. You could go to a goodwill, or whatever you have near you, and buy a cheapo keyboard, and connect that just to play Tomb Raider.
Alt+Enter will make it full screen, but keep in mind that these games weren't intended for massive hi-res screens, so they might stretch out a bit, and have some quality issues.
Very helpful vid. Is there anything I can do about mouse speed though? My mouse moves at a snails pace inside the DOS game.(Blood Bowl 95). It of course moves fine outside of the game.
Make sure that you're in the directory you installed it in, in dosbox. Then type dir to see what's in the directory. I'm assuming that your game's exe file to run it is called dagger.exe, and it wants you to type that in dos. You may need to type out "dagger.exe," but dagger should work. Make sure the command path points to the directory dagger.exe is in.
Yes, I don't have dosbox on my computer right now, but I think there's either a text document already made in the dosbox main folder, or you make one yourself, but I'm almost positive it's already made. Then I think you just add your commands in order like you would on an ordinary batch file. I'll go download it and double check. I should have it on my computer anyway.
I was a bit wrong. I had forgotten what to do. Anyway, if you go to programs, under the dosbox heading there's another dropdown called configuration. Don't change anything yet, instead scroll all the way to the bottom where it says [AUTOEXEC]
There you just put each line in individually that you want to run on dosbox startup then save, and there you go.
but i do all your steps and when i get to try to open the game it says "This program requires microsoft windows"...but i already have windows xp...help
Try running it in compatibility mode for windows 95 or something. Do this by installing it in normal windows, and then right click the icon, go to properties. Then click the compatibility tab, check the box that says something along the lines of, "Run in computability mode for," then choose windows 95 or 98 from the drop down. Some games like battlechess were written for older windows operating systems, and are not meant for DOS.
Not sure if you can help. I am trying to figure out the best configuration to play my DOS games on, text and images appear distorted because I have a 24'' LCD 1920X1080, but I have no idea what to change in dosbox.conf, any suggestions?
Any idea how to get cyberia to work? I have the CD. Mounted all drives I can think of, install cyberia via dosbox, says its successful and to type 'cyberia' to run the game.. I do that but then it says no Cd detected. HELP PLEASE
Did you remember to mount the CD? I am assuming not since this isn't that tutorial. I made another tutorial teaching you how to run games off CDs a while ago. The link for it is in the video description.
I have a question. My computer has Vista on it, and once I type dir, for the 2nd time under "dosgame" it displays the game, but it always says: 0 files, and 0 bytes 3 files 110, 540, 800 bytes free. Where did I go wrong?
um what if it dosent come with an exe file O>O trying to play tyrian 2000 and i only get a file but no exe with it , inside is only the setup and all that
Which if I remember correctly (I don't have dosbox on here currently) will mount your d hard drive, and then make your virtual directory called C, but C doesn't actually exist, it only exists virtually, but I may have switched the letters by mistake.
So you can actually mount a specific folder, and it will act like a virtual harddrive, by mounting like for example:
I have a problem, I'm playing The Need For Speed fine but I ain't getting any sound. Something tells me that it is just a simple thing, so could someone please give me a bit of advice on how to get the sound blasters working ?
Fucking Vista, over protective-OS means I can't extract and make a new folder in Program File so I have to paste it in asfter Extraction. Which I don't think works
What a great trick to bypass that "Mounting C:\ is not recommended" message. Using a forward slash instead of a back slash. Thanks. That message bugs me a lot.
You need to make sure while you're installing the game, you configure the audio. It will ask about your sound card, and dosbox conveniently emulates many sound cards. So you need to select one of the many on the list. And test the audio when you install in dosbox. I can't give you straight walkthrough since all games and programs have different installers, but the overall process is the same.
Some games may not have the same labeling as others. Or aren't dos games. Your best bet is trial and error, or external help, since I don't have that game.
question: when i mount it, it thinks I only have 100mb on the virtual c drive. any way to change that? also Abandonia is pretty cool but it only seems to let you download like 1 game per day :(
if not said before, if you don't want to type commands everytime, you can use a front-end. i never actaully tried one but i heard they were good. (ex. d-fend)
Okay I have a few questions. Is there a way for dos box to open a boot disk? Some of the older DOS games from the 80's were only playable by putting the floppy disk in the drive and booting the computer with the disk in. These games CANNOT be run by executing an exe command as described in your video. Do you know how to do this? (Basicly im tring to get 'Pinball Construction Set' working.) Oh and good video. 5 of 5.
It is possible to mount a CD drive or a floppy drive using a different command, my newest tutorial shows you how to use a CD drive, and modifying that command a bit lets you use a floppy drive, which I think is basically the same thing only has a different tag line after it.
I'm adding a link to my CD dosbox video tutorial to the description, if that can help you at all. The command for mounting a floppy drive is different than a CD drive, but I think it should help.
It's probably a resolution thing. Older games were meant to be ran at small resolutions like 800x600 or smaller, so it's stretching it out a lot. It's better to really play them in the window.
Run install.exe in dosbox, and go through the install. Dosbox will emulate sound cards and things so you pick those from a list. Then run the game after installing in dosbox. My running games from a CD in dosbox goes more into depth on the install process.
I have toonstruck on disk, I use it on dosbox and everything works fine. It's just that when Flux speaks this very annoying message appears: Disk read error (exit, ignore or retry). When I select ignore it automatically skips whatever Flux said. And it's VERY ANNOYING! Does anybody have ANY advice??
The colon on an American keyboard is on the ";" semicolon key. I guess it is possible that your keyboard has a different configuration, and you'll have to find it.
Whats the name of that wallpaper ?

Then I think you just add your commands in order like you would on an ordinary batch file. I'll go download it and double check. I should have it on my computer anyway.
dmanbiker 2 years ago
I was a bit wrong. I had forgotten what to do. Anyway, if you go to programs, under the dosbox heading there's another dropdown called configuration. Don't change anything yet, instead scroll all the way to the bottom where it says [AUTOEXEC]
There you just put each line in individually that you want to run on dosbox startup then save, and there you go.

i tried to play battle chess, an old game
but i do all your steps and when i get to try to open the game it says "This program requires microsoft windows"...but i already have windows xp...help
NBGHHS 2 years ago

If it's on a disk, there's a link in the video description that points to a tutorial I made for CD games.

Any idea how to get cyberia to work? I have the CD. Mounted all drives I can think of, install cyberia via dosbox, says its successful and to type 'cyberia' to run the game.. I do that but then it says no Cd detected. HELP PLEASE
cyberdyne37 2 years ago
Did you remember to mount the CD? I am assuming not since this isn't that tutorial. I made another tutorial teaching you how to run games off CDs a while ago. The link for it is in the video description.
dmanbiker 2 years ago
Thanks, found that video shortly after. Can now play Cyberia!!

I have a question. My computer has Vista on it, and once I type dir, for the 2nd time under "dosgame" it displays the game, but it always says: 0 files, and 0 bytes 3 files 110, 540, 800 bytes free. Where did I go wrong?

if i have dosbox on 1 drive C and want to put the games on drive D what do i mount and well just tell me the command for something like that.
Gameplayer77 2 years ago
I think you should type mount C D:
Which if I remember correctly (I don't have dosbox on here currently) will mount your d hard drive, and then make your virtual directory called C, but C doesn't actually exist, it only exists virtually, but I may have switched the letters by mistake.
So you can actually mount a specific folder, and it will act like a virtual harddrive, by mounting like for example:
mount c d:\programs\games

You're selecting the install thing rather than the thing to start the game.

Fucking Vista, over protective-OS means I can't extract and make a new folder in Program File so I have to paste it in asfter Extraction. Which I don't think works

What a great trick to bypass that "Mounting C:\ is not recommended" message. Using a forward slash instead of a back slash. Thanks. That message bugs me a lot.

how do you capture music on vista im having a hard time...great tutorial by the way..you just earned yourself a subscriber
Darthgatz 2 years ago
You need to make sure while you're installing the game, you configure the audio. It will ask about your sound card, and dosbox conveniently emulates many sound cards. So you need to select one of the many on the list. And test the audio when you install in dosbox. I can't give you straight walkthrough since all games and programs have different installers, but the overall process is the same.

I got the game to plan but its uber laggy for some reason..anyone know the problem
PunkRockerDanny 3 years ago
You have to overclock the dosbox cycle thing. I forget the commands to do so, but it should say on the dosbox websight.
It just makes the dosbox run faster, so it makes the games run faster. It shouldn't be anything with your computer.

i figured it out it is ctrl+f12 thanks

Some games may not have the same labeling as others. Or aren't dos games. Your best bet is trial and error, or external help, since I don't have that game.

Is it on a CD? because then you have to use the CD rom tutorial for dosbox, which is one of my newer vids.

question: when i mount it, it thinks I only have 100mb on the virtual c drive. any way to change that? also Abandonia is pretty cool but it only seems to let you download like 1 game per day :(
tomkelly00 3 years ago
if not said before, if you don't want to type commands everytime, you can use a front-end. i never actaully tried one but i heard they were good. (ex. d-fend)
silelol 3 years ago
you can just put mount c c:\file name then c:
then type your game name

Okay I have a few questions. Is there a way for dos box to open a boot disk? Some of the older DOS games from the 80's were only playable by putting the floppy disk in the drive and booting the computer with the disk in. These games CANNOT be run by executing an exe command as described in your video. Do you know how to do this? (Basicly im tring to get 'Pinball Construction Set' working.) Oh and good video. 5 of 5.
TigerClawTV 3 years ago
It is possible to mount a CD drive or a floppy drive using a different command, my newest tutorial shows you how to use a CD drive, and modifying that command a bit lets you use a floppy drive, which I think is basically the same thing only has a different tag line after it.
I'm adding a link to my CD dosbox video tutorial to the description, if that can help you at all. The command for mounting a floppy drive is different than a CD drive, but I think it should help.

alright i need help why does DOSBox turn a false color when i put it in full screen like it turns red and yellow when i put it in full screen
Rocky54167 3 years ago
It's probably a resolution thing. Older games were meant to be ran at small resolutions like 800x600 or smaller, so it's stretching it out a lot. It's better to really play them in the window.
dmanbiker 3 years ago
alright
Rocky54167 3 years ago
hm, one thing. the game i have has got "INSTALL.EXE" so.. do i have to run that in dosbox, if so. what do i do after that?
viperxeon 3 years ago
Run install.exe in dosbox, and go through the install. Dosbox will emulate sound cards and things so you pick those from a list. Then run the game after installing in dosbox. My running games from a CD in dosbox goes more into depth on the install process.
dmanbiker 3 years ago
i can't do that, with almost any game that has a .bat file as setup, so how do i set them up now ?

what do i need to do then.
Reply someone
Axelga2112 3 years ago
One of them should be the main executable, that you need to click on. They should only run independently. Try trial and error.

The colon on an American keyboard is on the ";" semicolon key. I guess it is possible that your keyboard has a different configuration, and you'll have to find it.
