There was something unique and offbeat about her voice..truly her own style..who couldn't love her? Magnificent in every way. Ms Stafford, if you can hear us...Bravo to a job well done.
Loved seeing this clip of the great Jo. Wish she had spoken at the end, but nevertheless she came across as classy, smart, and nice. And what a singer she was! The best.
The late great Jo Stafford was one of America's greatest singers. What a voice...what a talent...and quite a lovely, intelligent & attractive lady! She is sorely missed. THANK you so very much for sharing this delightful footage with us! :)
Your comment prompted me to play my 78 rpm copy of "Shrimp Boats" and you are so right! This was a completely pure, natural voice and to have excelled at comedy recordings, pop and all things jazz, Miss Stafford was nothing short of gifted and unusually skilled.
I love seeing these segments of "What's My Line?" where everyone were held to a standard of not necessarily high, but basic class and poise.
Well said, Neptunesque! Thoughtful, insightful, intelligent, mature & sensitive remarks such as yours are appreciated so very much in these days. I too love these vintage episodes.....proof positive that vulgarity is NOT required for excellent entertainment! Hope ALL is well with you & yours too! :)
Funny, back then they were so prim and proper just handshakes.. Today ,everyone would be kissing and hugging her real phony-like. (Letterman, Leno, etc.)
She travelled so much to entertain the troops during WWII & the Korean War, that she was nicknamed G.I. Jo.
With her husband, Paul Weston, they made histerical recordings in the late 50's as Jonathan & Darlene Edwards. Jonathan played the piano less-than-perfect, while Darlene sang way off key.
The southern drawl was actually a reference to the version of "Tempation" that Jo Stafford did. She sang it as a novelty with a Hillbilly twang. She did an entire nightclub act as a nightclub singer who wasn't quite good enough and it was hilarious.

Which she also put to good use in "Feudin', a-Fussin' and a-Fightin'," one of my personal favorites.

I wonder why the Game Show Network didn't show this on tv after Jo Stafford died?
