It's astonishing to think that Queen Elizabeth I, some 500 years ago, would still brecognise the main elements of the game although she'd be rather shocked by modern day fringing techniques! It's a little known fact that in medieval times, when the game originated, priests umpired all matches. The black garb of modern umpires dates back to those times, although the flowing robes of the 15th century have now been replaced with rather more practical and abbreviated, 'two set' worn today.
I got really anxious when the referee checked the door after the first quarter, to me it seemed the jib lock loosened just before the lilly-gap which would counter the greens on the board. No wonder they had to attempt a bouncing squire to accompany the previous inning. When they came up short for the boot-swing I thought that was game already, but the threesome really kicked the game up for them.
Brilliant fringing, too. You just can't find players like this these days.
Why do we only see the dull village green version? Until you've seen the West Indies' fearsome seamers tearing the Aussies a new one back in the eighties, you can't begin to appreciate this game...
2:13 - the referee missed the falted deduction - obviously its a tough one to call but had he seen it, Mulroney could have gone on to make a direct sequence.
Their skill at ringing the fringe past the three longs in such a smooth manner must be observed, as well as their ability at knowing when to take back a knobble after gaining a Guilder Jump. It was risky for them to double their wager, but once Mulroney moved the Jack behind the leading color, it was a straight sit-down from there. Well played. Knicker at the first quarter, also.
Wow that was a really controversial call by the ref but they pulled through and cattled the ring up through the three longs just before the halftime rest..
Seriously this. I stayed up for three hours watching cricket while in Scotland and I still have no idea how the game is played or what anyone was trying to accomplish. This makes an equal amount of sense.
If they would have moved the yellows sooner they would not have had to sub out later to pick up the extra jiske roll for the sidecross fringe points. Classic rookie mistake and also why I refuse to partake in any pickup games these days, waste of time. Clean follow through roll at 1:40, gives the pickado plenty of time to ensure they are not penalized for swept felt.
Obviously the beautiful fringe was the clincher. I've only seen a fringe as nice as that before, in '83 in south africa an Indian by the name of Safeet Kipiru fringed an absolutely perfect ring to a 31. Simply stunning. Overall well played here though. Pattern could be changed a bit snappier and the changing needs crispness but otherwise a brilliant match.
These guys are also well known for the popular game of Stifting, which they developed. After fringing the ring, you can play the Ace card back over the Jack, if you have a nine card. That's the first stift. And if you raise with a hundred Guilders, you can take back the Queen, and if you draw a club, you can also put the nine over the seven and take back the ten. Then, after you've doubled your wager, you can place a double stift along with a Jack in the leading colour. Then you yell Stift!
Well yeah... It's easy if your pitch is as nice as that. When I played at University we were lucky if we could even fringe a handful of rings in a full test.
@PyroBoydj Actually, that can be an advantage. Take Conrad McAllister, for instance. All his life he trained on dirt -finding a patch of green in his hometown was like winning the lottery, and when he was finally given the opportunity to play on a professional pitch it was the easiest thing in the world for him. That's the reason why the best players come from developing countries, their first-world counterparts are too soft and just quit at the first sight of a real obstacle.
@MGBPrince really? i thought this WAS cricket. i must be a complete idiot for not knowing this is actually not cricket. thanks for letting us all know
