Harmonies aren't too difficult if you know what key you are in. It's not just knowing what key you are in, but actually "knowing" what pitches fit and don't fit in your head, and then just letting it out. :)

It gets easier the more you practice. Yay music! :D

I agree with LAoceangurrl. I don't know if you've ever had voice training lesson but that nasal effect you're getting is from singing from your head, through your noise. Try to focus on pitching your voice so you can feel it through your chest.
