  • Alex... Fine job! Try messing about with Rutherford's Rickenbacker tuning.

The Musical Box was known as "F-Sharp" before it was completed.. you'll see why!

Top E goes up to F#.

    B goes up to C#

    G goes down to F#

Bottom three strings stay the same.

  • Love It... Excellent...

  • what effeect do you use at the beginning with the strat?

  • @slapfunker

No effects, just electric and 12-string acoustic.

  • @hyperboreal

Hi, sounds very nice. This tune was known as "F-Sharp" for a while before it was finished.

You should check out Mike Rutherford's Rickenbacker tuning. Mess about with it and you'll discover some interesting things. As far as I know this is the only song on which this tuning is used - a whole guitar dedicated to one song.

You need to re-tune the top three strings as follows. Top E goes up to F#. B goes up to C#. G goes DOWN to F#. (Bottom three strings stay the same).

  • god bless ya

  • .....also

    Jan Akkerman - 1 - Stadskanaal Oct 13, 2007

  • For a good intro to Greenslade is here on youtube. Search...

    Greenslade - The ass's ears (1975 live)

  • You can get a nice intro to a guy called D'Gary. It's a solo live acoustic here on youtube

...D'Gary Live @ The Skirball Center...

    I'll shut up now!

  • No apologies, I like to hear about new music (even if it' s not focussed on guitar) and those sound like some interesting bands. I'm starting to appreciate more some of the It Bites stuff, actually :D Francis Dunnery is amazing. I had seen this guy playing an acoustic version of 'Back in NYC' some time ago , had no idea he was the front-man of It Bites.

  • @hyperboreal - He was doing write-ups on his site of house concerts. He was mistreated at some of them, incensed me so i signed up. 2 years later he came! I ponied up the $1,000 by charging my friends $30 and he came to my house as a stop of about 35 house concerts around the USA. He played acoustic for HR+1/2 and it was truly brilliant. My friends were blown away. Terrifically funny and interesting. He played for planty for 3 yrs nearly replaced Phil Collins in Genesis. I'll shut up now. THX

  • Yup. sorry about the info. Fair doos on It Bites. I like Francis Dunnery. The band carries on without him. Anyway, I've subscribed to so looking forward to whatever grabs your fancy.... some over looked works from the 70's you might like is -- Argent's 'Circus' which will blow your shorts off but is a keyboard centric work as is Moraz's 'Refugee'. Also quite good was Duncan Mackay's 'Score'--FYI Johnnnny

  • ..."Prefab Sprout Dublin". Can't think of anything else really good that you might not know. With the exception of a weired popish band from the UK in the 80's called 'Fashion'. Their album Frabrique is a cracker! And Argent's 'Circus' is a monster. Greenslade 'Time & Tide'. I'll shut up now!

  • Wow, that's a lot of info to process in one go! Hmm, I've heard some of the It Bites stuff here on YouTube. They have a very straightforward, lively style and while I do reckon that their music is really more elaborated than the usual 80 stuff I don't think I'm up for those kind of songs with catchy choruses at the moment. Perhaps I should give them a second chance... On the other hand, Greenslade or that album by JPJ is much more close to the kind of stuff that I like. Cheers mate.

  • I'm sure you'll like their solo stuff by Dunnery & Co 'IT BITES SCREAMING ON THE BEACHES LIVE' - Penny for your thoughts!!!

  • Yeah..."IT BITES OLD MAN AND THE ANGEL TOKYO" is fantastic if you've never heard them. (otherwise you might look at their pop stuff and go...crap).

  • While we are here.. check:

    Brand X 'Running on three'

    PFM 'world becomes the world'

and there is this great guitarist out of Madagascar called D'Gary. FYI. Great stuff here from you and will look on with some interest!

  • While we are here: check out here on youtube (with the headphones): "John Paul Jones Thunderchief" and check out the very angry solo in "John Paul Jones Angry Angry".

  • Hyperboreal: Have you come across IT BITES in you music travels? Can't commission you to do their 'once Around the World' could I?

  • No, I haven't heard that band. I'll try to check them out.

  • Well, THe original guitarist is Francis Dunnery in the original line up who is now a solo artist doing House Concerts! He's been to my house a couple of times!!! Anywho, his 'you'll never go to heaven' might be a good intro or his equinox documentary here on youtube 'IT BITES ONCE AROUND THE WORLD'. Let me know i'll subscribe incase you decide to you like his stuff.

  • Lovely.

  • GEREAT right hand technique!

  • I have the same guitar, is it a Stagg?

  • A Stagg it is. But I don't have that one anymore. Heavy headstock, uh? :D

  • master, I'm always dreaming to play the guitar as you do, maestro impresionante

  • would you plaese tab it? =))) thankss

  • i give up =(

  • i think the tuning is EADF#BF# (electric)... but i can't play it properly

  • yes, that's the tuning I used on the video, even though the proper one is the one with the three F#: EADF#F#F#

  • you nailed it!

  • felicitaciones!!!!!! espectacular

  • the tuning is EADF#F#F#? how strange!

  • bagus

  • Very good!!!!

Can I ask you why you play it a half tone down?

  • Probably due to some E-string breaking on both guitars (top E is tuned to F# and that frightening G on the 12-string)-

  • Dude... can you please tab your version? I've been struggling for years trying to dissect midi files and mess with tunings but I think you nailed it.

  • So cool!

It's nice to see Genesis covered so excellently on YouTube.

    Great work!

  • the link in the info does not work at all, unless it works for you, but i dont know. i want to learn the song the way you play it. do you know another site that has tabs the way you play it, or could you perhaps tab it?

  • Yep, the page doesn't work anymore. I'm sorry, I don't know where it is now and I don't have any tabs. Tuning should be EADF#F#F# if you want to try for yourself.

  • fantasticooooooo !!! eccezionale fantasmagorikoo

  • "fantasmagorikoo"! I like that :) Thanks.

  • you know were to get any GOOD transcriptions or tabs of any of the old genesis or anthony phillips stuff?

  • very cool guitar you have :) what brand is it?

  • You are awesome my friend. I can't get enough of you pleaying these old Genesis classics. Bravo!!

  • beautiful rich sounding vid my friend.

  • eccezionale!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Molte grazie!

  • Thank you so much! It's very refreshing to hear old Genesis played in a different way.

  • I love your videos. Feel subscribed!

Seriously(if you're english) you're my idol ! you play acoustic song from my favourite bands ! BRAVO!!!!

  • wonderfull!!! ^^

  • The Musical Box (canadian cover band) is cool and all, but Im really getting sick of their plugs in comments.

  • any way you could tab this? it sounds great!

  • Very cool!

  • That was great! Simply great! Keep the Genesis posts coming!

  • Hi Hyper,

    big controversy...

Check the canadian guys, Musical Box, playing the song itself (Musical Box) and notice the Mike Rutherford part... Should be the 3 F# tuning...

    How come?

  • excellent as usual

  • excellent playing - I love early Genesis and was sceptical about someone covering the guitar parts with any precision, but you've really got a lot of those riffs well worked out - especially impressed with Dancing with the Moonlit Knight.

Well done - keep it up.

p.s. love Starship Trooper as well.

  • wow indeed. very nice. more!

  • kkk

i see genesis around, there i find my friend!

    rsrsrs

    kiss to you Tony!

  • Yes, there will be more excerpts, I hope, but first I'll have to figure out some passages that still aren't very clear even peeking at bentiresias magnificent work. It has to do mainly with Tony's 12-string guitar part which is kind of buried in the mix and also some unusual chords further on. Once you got the "weird" tuning Mike is using things are easier with his part. The Hammond parts are another thing :)

  • wow!!!

    magnifico!!!
