This is amazing!!! What an increbibly raw and emotionally charged performance!! This is Kevin at his absolute best, end of story. Kevin owns this part as far as I'm concerned and the heavy applause at the end of the song is totally justified.
I don't think he's that good on this video but on the cd i've got i really like him, he's always been my second favourite Joe after Hugh Jackman. I know Hugh may not have as good a voice as a lot of other Joes but his acting makes up for that, he get the arrogence that Joe is supposed to have.
@badwolf79 he was better as Gaston in Beauty and the Beast, oh and his singing improved when he did Oklahoma and Boy from Oz. But, I just love the rawness of Hugh's voice.
kevin anderson, on the london stage when it opened, was the ultimate joe gillis; the voice of a man you really believe is a hand-to-mouth earning/starving screenwriter. he took a page from bogart's sam spade to do this role, and he was brilliant doing it.
Its seems that everyone is over Critical over the Boulevard note each time no matter who seems to be singin, having been learning this for a show of musical numbers, it just happens to be how the Dots are written, everyone that sings it has the same problem, it just comes down to a pronounciation and their own accent that changes things
Meh. His "boooooulevard" doesn't bother me much. Nor does his performance here. I've always found the role of Joe as written in the musical to be sort of obnoxious anyway. Alan and most every other musical Gillis I've seen gets on my nerves at one point or another.
What really made me cringe was the weird phrasing in the last note. Other than that, I don't think he's as awful as everyone says he is.
@HouseOnSunset Michael Ball would have been great judging from what I have seen from the 1st Sydmonton workshop of Sunset and his later concert performance with Petula Clarke.
I must concur with the ANNOYING usage of "BOOOOOLEVARD" I do enjoy his intensity, and way he seems to lose himself within the character, however perhaps a more sophisticated style could have worked out better.
ALL the Joes tend to suck because the role is nothing (I mean, this is his big number and the lyrics are just SO embarrassing), but this is especially terrible. "Sunset BYUUULOVAAHD, Headline BYYUUUUEEELEEVAWD." What's with that overly intense, applause-milking gesture at the end?
Don't kill me or anything E, but I don't dislike him in this role, nor this performance. At least he isn't hamming it up the way Alan Campbell did. It worked with Glenn making Norma campy, but not with Joe.
This isn't great...I admit that, however, Alan Campbell was awful. I saw him twice on Broadway and it was painful. I saw Kevin Anderson in London and thought he and Patti Lupone were awesome.

I actually like Anderson a lot better than Campbell. Campbell was all voice and overacting, no subtlety.

Not the best Joe - Rex Smith was a great joe up against Diahann Carrolls over the top grand diva Norma

He's pretty good, he's the only Joe that doesn't sound like a pansy...and he's got that 50's acting vibe going.
