i just had part of my finger amputated (index top 1/3) the doctor says it will smooth out to look more like a real finger. But right now it looks very jagged and un-even. Is this normal?
This happened to me about 2 weeks ago. How long til the pain/tenderness stops for the most part?
@anthonysob4 - it should smooth out like he stated. did they give you the silicon sleeve to help keep the finger more narrow? I had to have two of mine revised due to scarring. the sensitivity takes a good while after the stitches are out. you basically need to tap the tip an a table day after day. each day it gets better, and after a while it feels normal, and very little pain.
@BurnScarred yah im getting the stitches out in about an hour, and u say it will still be pretty sensitive? What was this silicone sleeve like did it irritate or hurt at all? Is tapping the tip on the table kinda like PT for evening the finger out? Does it hurt to tap the finger and how long should I wait until after the stitches out before I begin tapping?
@anthonysob4 - the bone is what is sensitive because it's not used to being the finger tip. by tapping the end on a table it tells the body that the bone needs to be more dense, so the more you do it the more dense the "now tip" gets. I started with a tennis ball, throwing it up and catching it on the end, and moved towards harder objects. now I can hit the tip of the fingers (stumps) on a wood table just like hitting it with your knuckles. otherwise you hit your finger a lot and it hurts
I should note that I finally got prosthetic fingers 5 years and 2 weeks after the accident, and it was hard to adjust to the longer length. the first 6 months after the amputation is the hardest (tying shoes, buttons etc) but you adjust very quickly to the point that its normal. as for the sleeve, that is used to help keep the tips from getting too fat (they are shrinkers) and are not painful to wear. it also can help to cut and sew up your gloves for custom fit.
I recently severed my index finger at work because of my incompetent boss. Although i have 9 finger left... i was devastated... W/C sucks. Quit my job... with the economy the way it is, this couldn't of happened at a worse time.
Not trying to sound like an asshole here but i thought those where you're toe's at first, i feel bad for you man, are there any disadvantages for it?im guessing there is
@django26 - Obama is the reason for the long delay. The VA finally paid for the Pros and I was casted for them. but because the VA is a mirror of Obamacare it will take a year to receive them.
and the price tag? $16,000.00
Obama is the worst thing to hit this country in over 200 years, and obamas spending is going to bankrupt the world. (he has spent more than all the other presidents combined) it's also why he has the lowest rating of any president right now.
@BurnScarred Completely sympathetic to your situation and I hope that ACell in Colombia, MD will be able to grow entire fingers with their matrix powder. They can grow tips of fingers and thumbs and have done so. I do not agree though about Obama. His ratings have never been lower than W's and it was W/Dick Cheney that bankrupt the country in the first place.
@Tushiwushiful - do a search for X-finger or DanielDean111 and you will see how advanced they have become, sadly if you are poor your never going to have them
he/she should get some robot fingers or something :l i have seen some kid who had robot hand it wasn't perfect but he could do something. btw it's maybe much easier to get robot fingers than hand
can you get used to it having amputated fingers? I am a thumb tip amputee, I still have half of my last digit of my thumb, but I still get upset over it when I use it, and it's been 9 months since the accident. Will I ever feel comfortable with my thumb again?
I'm used to it after 3 years.. it's not that big of a deal once the emotional issues are resolved. If you don't try to hide it, people don't notice, and thats half the battle.
using it is the other half.. I'm missing 4, and I don't have any problems now with most things.. some things I cannot do anymore, and other things are harder, but you adapt and move on
thank you for sharing. my boyfriend's nephews were in a wreck yesterday. the 13 year old lost part of one finger. we are praying that his remaining fingers will respond to the surgeon's reattaching them.
Wow, sorry to hear that. My brother lost his index in an industrial accident. What kind of fan belt? Automotive or industrial? That belt must have been spinning at high RPM i take it.

@BurnScarred Did you manage to raise the money for your finger prosthetics in the end?
Tushiwushiful 1 year ago
@Tushiwushiful - didn't raise a single penny
BurnScarred 1 year ago
@BurnScarred Aw I'm sorry. I didn't even know there were such a thing as finger prosthetics tbh. How much do they cost?
Tushiwushiful 1 year ago
@Tushiwushiful - more than a person can afford. for my hand it's around $3,000 per finger so around $12,000 to $14,000.
In other words.... never going to happen.

@BurnScarred In Germany, this is free and covered by your health plan. US should change their policies....Support Obama
