De mortibus nihil nisi bene, but - for all due respect - this was a stupid action. Coming back to the pits too fast, ruining his rear suspension. Many people admire Gilles for always going flat out, not matter what the risks had been. I tend to think that he threw too many races away by taking unuseful risks. In today's formula one, a driver would be penaltied for such a manouvre (see Melbourne 2009, Vettel continuing on three wheels after his collision with Robert Kubica).
the car was shit anyway by the way, not really a ground-effect-car like the other cars in the field. it only had much horsepower but i was not really a masterpiece
true, by 1980 it was hopelessly outdated and they ended the season in 11'th
Fortunately for Ferrari, Ligier somehow lost all their pre-season test data so after two dominant 1-2's in the first races, they magically vanished for the rest of the season. Williams stuck with the old FWo6 for 5 races, and by the time the FW07 started dominating it too had some reliability issues that robbed Alan Jones of a possible title (he won 4 races, against Scheckters and Villeneuve's 3 each).
This is my favourite villenueve performance, is what made him a legend in my eyes when I saw it live as a kid...I remember we were all cheering him jumping around with a huge smile in our faces....as brave as they come!!!
The man drove with his heart instead of his head. I don't know if that's the best way to drive, but we all love and respect him for it. I always smile when I see this video.
@TheNeverEndingGame The reason he was raising his arm was to warn drivers behind him that he was slow and in trouble, so to pay attention and avoid him. That is standard practice in many open cockpit sports.

No, è uscito perchè la gomma era già andata.

Senna likewise drove on the limit (seemingly every lap), and he was able to make it work; he is a triple World Champion. His fatal accident was caused by an unusual mechanical failure. I don't mean to say Gilles was not good enough to be Champion, he just didn't have the right circumstances to do it. The sport was also not as safe as when Senna was dominant.

Driving like a maniac is how NOT to be Champ, and a fast way to an early grave (as happened).Being fast is only one part of a champion,s makeup, there are other equally important parts.
Gilles was, and still is, the greatest Formula 1 driver. With no equal. "maniac" is not the appropriate word. When he was driving, he literally was living his life at a superior level, with no fear. Like the legendary Greek heroes. He was a god amongst humans.
Nobody races for their bank account, the amount of committment it takes to be an F1 racing driver should suggest otherwise. What about Justin Wilson, who PAID £500,000 to be a Minardi driver? Or Jenson Button, who bought out his contract for a whopping £10m?
I watched this race live. Some of the great moments in F1. And Gilles was one of the real Racing Drivers. A man of my heart. What I mis on this vid is the great breaking of Alan Jones to avoid hiiting Gilles.
I wont forget this race for the rest of my live. Sadly Gilles died in a horrific and unneccessary practice accident on Zolder (Begium) during the timed session for the Belgium GrandPrix of 1982.
I believe Villeneuve was a better driver than Senna. Only difference is Villeneuve didnt live long enough to prove it. While Senna did.
