  • I thought this was the best FPS on PS1 by a long way. Awesome graphics at the time, and they still look pretty nice, awesome music, awesome multiplayer. Quake 2 is a classic. I'd play this over COD any day.

  • call of duty for the 90's

  • @BlaZfy no, quake for the 90's

  • best music and graphics

  • heeelp LOL

  • Might I add that on the pc version you get more challenging "units", rounder looking sprites and even more "units". It's $10 on steam if you want to check it out.

  • Sure this port is good for the amount of things they did leave in but the amount of levels missing makes it an extremelly bad port.I also might be wrong on this but i think this port even took out the final boss.(maybe on n64 port)

  • One of the best games I played on the PSX! Master Multiplayer, great graphics and I really liked how the controls worked.

  • this version is SO much better then PC. Easier to to find places, less complicated hallways labyriths. Brilliant. And fuck framerate, i had PC for the price of PSx and graphics was worse then PSX version. To achieve this graphics on PC back in that day you needed shitload of money. PSX version all the way. and i'm telling this as a person thatalways played both pc and consoles

  • the game is brilliant

  • this is badass, i wish i woulda played it back in the day

  • One hell of a port! :D

  • this is the game whit the best graphics in ps1 this game is cool and graphics is the best for ps1

  • dont play quake ps1 on ps2 the ps1 games in ps2 cause damage in the ps2

  • @locoheroful what the fuck are you talking about? i've played tons of ps1 games on my ps2 and it's perfectly fine, there is a reason it's called a "backwards compatible" system. Don't give out information like that unless you know it's true

  • poke-ball!

  • Half Life 1 is based on this engine, some people have a very rar copy of half life 1 beta running on unmodded Quake engine, I would pay 100 bucks for a copy ^^

  • good graphics and lighting effects in the PSX version I admit ...

  • this was ten times better than the n64 version, quake rocks

  • @spiritlight9k the N64 port looks more like the original quake

  • when i was 13 or 14 me and my bro used to be a huge fans of quake2 ps version , we have won everyone in a concole cafes on multi player , but i never could win against him. this game will always be in my memory. this was a true hit for ps1 we had tons of ps games but this one was the best.

  • Fully agree with the video creator. This game ran greatly, looked excellent and the music was nothing short of awesome. I had many a great deathmatch, especially with the low gravity option. This, Alien Trilogy, and Doom were the PS1's best FPS games. Medal of Honour was good but felt unfinished and unpolished to me.

  • @WhiteboyUltima I still have Alien Trilogy, Doom, and Quake II for PS1. Agreed. They're all quality shooters. Much better than Call of Duty. There's no comparison.

  • quakepc.webs.com I want to get EVERY Quake-1-2 -EVER for my collection. I am waiting b4 they are out on the main QuakePC Site. ENJOYED the Video MUCH!

  • if you have a ps2 or ps3, you don't need an original ps mouse to play because you can use a normal pc one and connect it in the usb port

  • Defenitely underrated I loved this game played it alot with friends

  • your sad for killing that innocent guy

  • I used to play this all the time had great fun with it!

  • Yeahssss, I do HAVE this game and it was awesome! I played it on my PSP and it plays well compared to the PC version. I'll try to make a Hard playthrough of this later.

  • Doom and Quake 2 are the best 1st person shooters for the ps1 imo. Just wondering why Quake 1 was never released for ps1 though.

  • @tk80

I think they said at the time that it couldn't be done, and then ported it to the Saturn!

  • PS1 Quake II + multitap + 4 controllers = DA SHIT

  • I remeber playing multiplayer with 4 friends, oh how they hated my railgun hehehe

  • I cant say it is underrated. At least not here where i live...there was a plenty of copys and friends with it.

  • This was a great port of Quake II. I have it myself and I remember I didn't think it would even be possible to bring Quake II to the PS1. The additional lighting effects and lens flare were really nice looking.

  • I've had (and still sometimes have) more fun with the PS1 Quake 2, than with the PC version.

What's more, it's also a very good looking game, making full use of the PS1's capabilities, with a ultra smooth frame rate: 30FPS in high-res mode, high quality textures , superb lighting, and high polygon counts.

The multiplayer deathmatch modes run at very high speeds, even with a 4-player splt-screen.

    Damn.

  • @Mickeyzzzz but you get all that and more on the PC version with better graphics and crontrol... idk why you would have more fun with the PS1 version

  • @AlmightyUniden

    I know, but I'm a console gamer.

  • I have it on ps1 and pc too but on pc this game was not so fun,but on ps1 this was the GAME

  • I can't say I agree with this one. Impressive to look at? yeah, it's a nice looking PS1 game I'll give it that.

But to play?... I'm sorry, but in my honest opinion this version is not fun to play at all. I didn't ever play the N64 version so I have no frame of reference to that, but I did play the PC version a lot.. when porting a PC game to a console, there is only so much compromise I can take, and this game sacrifices far too much to say "Quake 2 on PS1, YEAH!" :/

  • @MikeReiner Sure, a lot of stuff was cut out of this version, but when you look at other FPS games on the PS1, this, to me is the most impressive one due to it being a port of an, at the time, high end PC FPS. It may not hae as much content, but it still keeps the fun combat of the PC version. You know, that balls-out in your face kill s*** feel that made the PC version so fun.

  • @teh2Dgamer Alien trilogy, or DOOM beats it in so many ways, the only true underrated game is Alien trilogy hands down.

  • @MikeReiner Multiplayer is where it was at!

  • there's no Quake I for Playstation?

  • @schizoafekt Nope. They never released it because they didn't think it was possible, but the Saturn got an impressive port of Quake 1.

  • @schizoafekt if your looking for a good quake 1 port try the n64 version and no there isnt one for ps1

  • @pinkwolfs The Saturn port was also pretty good. It looked grainy, but considering it was the Saturn, it was a miraculous port.

  • Dude you should do one of these for the timesplitters series. One of the best series ever.

  • @MonkeyMojo54 I'm not sure if Timesplitters qualifies as underrated though. It's actually pretty well known.

  • i have quake 2 for nintendo 64, ps1, and pc. its just that good

  • Screw all the modern FPSs, Quake forever!

  • I never had Quake 2 for PS1...

I had PS1...If i had Q2 for PS1 i would love it....Even if it had crapier graphics then PC version but effects are better.

Too bad that PS1 was weaker then N64...

    Quake 2 for PS1:

    +Better Effects,Similar Levels,Same Felling,etc...

    -Low Res,Constant Loading,Less Enemies,etc...

    Quake 2 for PS1:

    +Higher Res,Extra Effects,Scriptet Events,etc...

    -Less Frame Animation(Like Quake1),Understanble Strogg Words,etc..

Quake 2 for PS is better then N64 version!

  • I remember playin a Demo for this game for my PS1, GOD I wish Id bought the full game.

on a side note I tend to believe FPS game were more popular on the N64 than the Playstation, probably cos of Goldeneye and Turok

  • Indeed, this PS1 port is REALLY underrated. In fact, the only Quake that ever made it to Filipino public as far as I can remember back in the old days is Quake 3 for the PC. I remember my cousin buying an obviously pirated disc that includes installers for Quake 1, 2, 3, a modded Q3 with Bid for Power (DBZ) mod, and Spider-Man and lending the disc to me. It was the first time I played Quake. Still have that disc 'till now, but I doubt with all the scratches it can still work.

  • i loved playing this game multiplayer with 4 controllers and a multitap

  • i remember when dad came home one morning when i was little and we played this game for the first time

  • Favorite game of all time!

  • i still have that game !

  • QUAKE is the game that requires no reload!

  • This is one hell of a game. I bought this and LOVED it. It's an excellent port. I agree with the uploader of this video - this game was horribly overlooked when it deserved so much more.

  • Underrated? bullshit, this game rocks!!!

  • @thehemuliman Underrated as in overlooked. The Quake name is in no way overlooked, but the PS1 port of Quake II is.

  • @teh2Dgamer are you sure? i mean no offense but the game had a 8.7/10 "great" rating on ign.com. seriously, it is possibly the best FPS on PS1, and the best port of this game for this console, way over its competitors.

  • @CardiacCrysis I'm not talking about review scores.

  • Are u COMPLETELY SURE this game is underrated?

  • @reggiardito The PS1 port is underrated. It was generally overlooked.

  • @teh2Dgamer Ohhh ok.

  • I dunno if it REALLY has the split-screen on four (cos' I heard it actually has link cable support for that), but nice footage anyways... apart from it being kinda... dark or else.

  • @CrashNicker Actually I don't think it has link cable support, but I know it has split screen DM up to four players.

  • @teh2Dgamer Then I'm stupid enough for not testing it yet XD Thanks for mentioning anyways.

  • @CrashNicker I've only testes 2 player split screen, but I've seen vids of the game with three players playing. Oddly enough, I can no longer find those vids. Maybe they were taken down.

  • @teh2Dgamer Me too. Only on N64 version.

  • @CrashNicker I've tested the N64 Version and for some reason it works like shit , i can see enemies and objects trough the walls (PD : I use project 64 because every N64 game costs like 50 damn bucks in here...)

  • arrrgh this game man was one of the best games ive played

    i loved multiplayer lol

  • Wow, I had no idea Quake II came to consoles.

  • Graphics look very good, I can't believe the PSX could handle Open GL HDR, only thing is that the gun Models are smaller and your Arm is twice as skinnier I guess because it was on television. But CSB:D

  • @Krypticflask Also keep in mind that I have texture smoothing on in this vid because I'm using a PS2 to play it, but even with the gritty textures of the regular graphics, this game looks incredible for a PS1 game.

  • Superb game, it really shows what a PlayStation is capable of.

High quality textures, amazing lighting-effects, super smooth gameplay without framerate drops etc.

When unlocking the extra optons in deathmatch mode, like adjusting the gamespeed, it's even more impressive,

All hails to Hammerhead, the developer.

  • quake 2 PC on gamespy baby!!

  • Kick ass game. I don't fuckin understand why people think that this game sucks compared to first Q.

  • wow, back in the 90s lensflares were the SHIT! i guess they died along with superb straight forward FPS - i really miss good egoshooter-games nowadays

  • Better than Goldeneye, I wish someone would start an "Overrated games" batch of vids and start it off by posting a vid of "Goldeneye 007" for N64 on there. That game is just another first person shooter that's all.

  • I'm a huge GE fan, but even I can admit that in the long term view, GE's Gameplay is still very fun, but aside from personal reasons (like the many hours I spent playing the multiplayer), neither GE or especially Perfect Dark are close to being the greatest FPS games of all times. I personally played the hell out of GE, and later PD (not as much because the blurry crap really annoyed me).

  • let me just say this game has much better game mechanics then QUAKE 4 AND DOOM 3

its ot stiff and its not clostrophobic meaning it is not so closed that enemies and humans ca barely move

the newer ID games quake4 and 3 are pretty limited ieveryway

  • this looks so great even today .. after watching your video

for some reason my youtube goes slow today ..

  • wow u are great playing this game this game its like call of duty well epset for the monster part well its like halo3 u could be good at those of both gameswow back in the good old days when i played the anjolina jolies game dont remember what was called but what i remember is that i had to kill a tiger

  • they need 2 put this on the PSN for PS3 so it might have a second chance with gamers. PSone classics section is a good place 2 put it.

  • underrated ???...this game is sucess man

  • good old days lol

  • awesome

  • yea this port is impressive but just as with mdk it's a pain to play nowadays when you are used to the current "norm" with 2 analogs, however a mouse is on it's way so imma try it with mouse :)

  • I actually go with the right control stick configuration. Granted it's hard to get the hang of using the d-pad to move, and L1 to shoot, but you get used to it after a while.

I feel that it's the best control scheme for the controller.

  • @teh2Dgamer

i will try it and then when i've recived my mouse imma give you my verdict by playing with a mouse, if you don't beat me to it ;)

  • @ik00R Well I don't have any plans to get the PS1 mouse at the moment. Someday I guess.

  • @teh2Dgamer i use an original digital contoller- no addons, no nothing.

  • @gigaty123 I haven't played it that way, but I'm sure there are some good configurations with the plain controller too.

  • hmmm Quake II was never underrated, the official magazine guys loved it and they had a list of the top 100 games for the PS1 and it landed on the top 5, its also considered to be the best PS1 FPS(and one of the best FPSs ever).

    anyway good gameplay video

  • It was largely overlooked by gamers seeing that it came out right before Medal of Honor. It didn't even sell well enough to be a greatest hit, so even if it got good reviews (by underrated I mean overlooked, and it has nothing to do with what the mags rated it), and even got good acclaim from the gaming press, it was still completely overlooked by gamers at large.

It barley got mentioned after it hit.

  • @teh2Dgamer

Try Queke 2 N64 with 4MB Expansion Pack.

    The game flyes.

  • I have the 64 version with the expansion pak, and the PS1 version is still better.

The animation on the N64 are still choppy with the expansion pak. Not saying the 64 version is bad, it's pretty good, but the PS1 version is still a lot more fluid, and just plays better.

  • To me this isnt a real version of Quake 2 just look at the weapons at least on the 64 the weapons look like the pc version wich is the best but still the 64 version is better than the ps1 version

  • The N64 version is choppy as hell by comparison. Besides, you quote the N64 version as being more like the PC version, because of the weapons (which isn't true mind you) and leave out the fact that the N64 version is nothing like the PC version.

It's a completely different game whereas the PS1 actually uses levels from the PC original.

Sorry, this is the one case where the PS1 port is superior tot he N64 port. Runs smoother, and plays better.

  • you know what the irony is some old games have something about there game engine that makes em funner than newer game engines....i dk bout u guyz... bt the shotgun in dinosaur hunter was better than turok evolution

  • @12345678919089 The Shotguns (the pump, and the auto shotgun) in the original Turok are still them most fun shotguns to use in the whole Turok Franchise. They were devastating in the game, but they just got weaker as the series went on.

  • @NostalgiaMan4000 Once again, by underrated I mean overlooked. The review are one thing, but this game really didn't sell that well meaning that it was completely overlooked by most PS1 gamers.

It was overshadowed by Medal of Honor which released about the same time. Overall, the gaming mags didn't give it a whole lot of attention when it hit.

  • just look at the blood thats a crapy game

  • @wuzuppeeps100 Your face is a crappy game :b

  • a shitload of pc fps gamers would disagree. Quake 2 has bloody great gamplay, its alot faster paced then modern fps and smaller enemies make aiming harder aswell.

i got q2 free with quake 4 on the pc, i played q2 to see what it was like and got hooked on it. i didnt even play quake 4 once untill i had completed quake 2. not many fps games age well but q2 is an exeption.

try it out peferably on pc u will have a blast if u give it a chance, (just enable freelook)

  • Quake II still holds up because it's more of an in-your-face action FPS. You actually feel like a badass while playing. If you compare it to the FPS of today, that are story driven, it won't hold up on those standards, because it's not even trying to be like them.

There are very few FPS games that let you feel like such a badass anymore. Now you have to hide every two seconds to let your life refill.

THat's actually what I love about oldschool FPS. They're more in-your-face.

  • PS1 mouse can really help. Aiming is like a PC games without keyboard. Its funny to play but working great. This means controler in left hand, mouse in right hand. You move with D-pad, L1 L2 is weapon selection, PS1 mouse left button is fire right button is jump. Mouse have only two buttons.

  • I've been meaning to get a PS1 mouse for years. I have a number of games that use it including Alien Resurrection, Command and Conquer, and a few others.

  • Maybe is rare maybe not i dont know . I played Die Hard Trilogy with mouse. Now i play Quake 2 on PS1 with LCD screen with PS1 mouse. its fun to play like this but Quake 2 is a really fantastic game, On PS2 its look like PS2 game, i mean seriously. Do you have Colin Mcrae 2 rally for PS1? For my opinion perfect port for PS1.

  • I've always heard great things about the Colin Mcrae series, but I've still yet to get around to play one.

  • Colie mcrae for the ps1 was great and very popular. it used 2 b on the ps1 granj tourismo for road and CM for rally.

  • Run very smooth, gameplay fantastic, music fantastic. I use right stick. And i have a PS1 mouse brand new complete with box.

  • i still have it too lol

  • you dont even get grenades on the n64 one

  • nice

  • I'm totally surprised this even works, but it does so amazingly well. Ok, they dropped shadow maps. The loading frequency more or less answers the "how does it fit" question, yet only in part. Any more technical details about the port?

  • I'm not sure on the technical details, but it's just an amazing port of the game.

  • Also keep in mind that I have texture smoothing on in this vid (I'm playing it on a PS2), so the textures look better than they would when just playing it on a PS1, but texture smoothing has no effect on the smoothness of play, and that's all original. It's one of the most impressive PS1 games from a technical standpoint.

Remember, this is after they assessed that the PS1 couldn't handle a port of the original Quake.

  • I think it is because they took the lowest quality of pc graphics. From there, it would use less resource with the extra stuff left. That extra stuff is used for lighting effects that the pc doesnt have. What make this run so smooth is mostly due to good programmers which we dont get alot.

  • this game is the bomb!! Too bad its shorter than pc version. 4 people multiplayer still awesome

  • Im playing it on psp. The only thing that suck is the camera

  • the PC version is so better than this shit

  • this game isnt underrated tons of people bought it and played it

  • I'm talking about the PS1 port which was hugely overshadowed by launching around the same time as Medal of Honor.

The Quake series as a whole isn't underrated, but the PS1 port is. It didn't even acquire a greatest hits status on the PS1.

  • Help

  • Holy crap this is for PS1 too?

  • Yep, and it's a very impressive port of the game.

  • wow just watching this vid makes me really wanna play it

  • That's how I first got the urge to play it. I had avioded it for years thinking it was inferior tot he N64 version which I owned, but it turns out that not only do I like it better than the N64 version, but it's probably my favorite PS1 FPS. I like it even more than Medal of Honor.

It's also one of the most impressive 3D games on the system.

  • good graphics for ps1

  • This was definitely one of the most impressive PS1 games ever made.

Not just because of the fact that it was a port of a top of the line PC game, but that factt hat it's one of the smoothest moving 3D games on the system.

  • A lot of ps1 games have decent graphics when used in an emulator with texture filtering on.

  • This isn't an emulator. I despise rom whores. This is the original copy of the game being played on a PS2 with texture smoothing on.

Believe me, the texture smoothing doesn't make a huge difference in this game. It just smooths the textures, but it doesn't do anything for the framerate. This game is one of the smoothest moving PS1 games as well.

It's an impressive port with an impressive frame rate.

  • rom whores? dude people who don't have ps1 consoles play emulators, no need to call us 'rom whores'. I personally prefer the way alot of ps1 games look with texture filtering so that is another reason I use them.

  • OK I'll call you what you really are then. Thieves, law breakers, and people without ethics. Is that better?

  • Yes, much better considering most of the games we 'steal' aren't copyright protected.

  • Yes they are. There are very few games out there that are true abondonware. Very few. Even if the company who made the games went out of business that doesn't mean that someone doesn't still own the rights to the name.

It's just an excuse for thieves. You're still stealing.

  • Actually there are very few ps1 games that are ESA protected. I would estimate around 10% of them. In any event I don't understand your hostility toward people who play the roms. Wouldn't you rather people got to play some obscure games that are very hard to find?

  • And besides I never once said I didn't play my original discs. I simply play them on the emulator, which has a disc run option.

  • If you play the original disks in an emulator, that's fine, however, that's not the case with 99% of the people who play emulators now is it? Just watching vids on youtube is enough to tell you that most of the people showing off retro games are using illegal roms.

  • I think the way society is headed is toward socialism honestly, and I honestly don't mind 90% of things being free. It doesn't stop me from working at what makes me feel better, like making music and exercising. Maybe one day we will actually have free healthy care for everyone too. You can't say that people who bust their asses don't deserve it. And besides these companies who produced these games are in no danger of going bankrupt. People are paying more for games now than they ever have been.

  • The companies are in no danger of going bankrupt? Are you serious. Where have you been the last ten years of gaming? Tell that to midway, Free Radical, Accliam, 3DO, 3D relams and the tons of other developers who have kicked it in recent years.

The cost of developing games has gone up immensely. Furthermore, in today's gaming market it's hard to get the mainstream idiot gamer's attention to buy the game. You're paying more because it cost more. Furthermore, it cost more in the 16-bit days.

  • And where then does the funding for such things as project natal come from? Obviously they are still making a fair sum of profit otherwise next generation consoles wouldn't still be in the works. The reason companies like 3D realms eventually go away is because they fund massive projects from the inside and then never finish a plethora of their own titles that people have been anticipating for years. But either way, I don't want to argue over this, I am going out to feed some homeless people.

  • no offense but the 360 load times for this game ARE INSANLEY LONG!! they made me stop playing the game!

  • Really? Hmm. The PC load times are quite fast on a more modern computer.

I wonder why the 360 port has load times as long as you say.

  • One of the greatest game for PS1... brings back memories

  • When I was a kid, this game was good, but the "help" made me scared so I stopped playing ^^

    good graphics for a ps1.

  • Help...help..help...help...help...help...help...help

  • Truly a classic.

Keep up the good work teh2DGamer!

  • I have the N64 version, I think was great for N64 but I never played the Ps1 version so I could not tell how different it was beside the graphics.

  • I have the N64 version, and I overlooked the PS1 version for years not thinking anything of it. I finally ordered it online, and was blown away.

The PS1's single player tries to mimic the PC version using levels from the original game whereas the N64 version, has all new levels, extremely choppy enemy animations, and uses 2D sprites for the weapons instead of polygons like the PS1 version.

The N64 version is still fun, and worth playing, but the PS1 version is a lot better IMO.

  • man, this brings back memories. I probably stayed up all night about 500 times playing splitscreen with friends.
