  • The reason he is finishing with two much weight on his back foot is that he is not loading properly. His swing is still way better than most youths, regardless of age.

  • I disagree here gillie. A leg kick is a bad thing, because it causes the head to jerk. His shoulders are right where they should be. Again, main issue is the lack of weight transfer to his front foot, it's collapsing to his backside instead.

  • It's not bad, main issue is his weight is falling back too much onto his rear leg. I'm guessing his back leg is bending/folding a tad much.

  • he needs to get his rear shoulder up. leg kick is a good thing, just his is a little long. a good way to correct that is a 5 gallon bucket 6" in front of his stride foot. this should fix his balance problem.

  • bring ur bat up

  • man i feel bad for him

  • High leg kick or, low, is not the main objective regarding power.

Every MLB player has their own"leg kick", high, low and, somewhere in between. The real objective is the transfering of weight, from balanced, to back and, back to a relatively balanced position.. The importance of returning back to balanced position, helps guard against the hitter committing their weight too soon. That's why guys get fooled on off speed stuff and, that's why it can be such an effective pitch for pitchers.

  • But with a high leg kick, weight transfer becomes easier, especially for a young hitter.IMO,it is not better.

I do agree with everything you say though.

  • he stinks?

  • He stunk in his last tournament too.Playing up as a 10 year old(he is a 9 year old now) went 7-7 in the last 3 games to help his team win the championship.Missed a grand slam by 3 feet, not bad for a contact hitter. But yea,he stinks.LOL

  • HES 11 YEARS OLD

  • yep,you caught me.lol

  • For an 8 year old his swing is pretty damn good, go watch any other kids that age hitting and it will drive you INSANE. Only thing im not a big fan of is how he loads up, I'm partial to a high leg kick and twisting the knee inward a little before making a stride. I know a lot of guys don't do the big leg kick, and nothing wrong with the way he does it at all, but in my opinion it helps generate a little bit more momentum for your whole body to really get into the ball.

  • I actually agrre that you CAN generate more power with a big leg kick BUT the point is to hit the ball and I believe you will make better and more consistant contact with a little more controll.Kinda like Pujols, amazing how many are starting to follow his lead now with a heel kick and wide stance.

  • Well, its like tsw used to say, "We talked, we experimented, we swapped bats. I was forever trying a new stance, trying to hit like greenberg or foxx or somebody, and then going back to my old way. I recommend that for kids. Experiment. Try what you see that looks good on somebody else. Try different bats, a bigger handle, a bigger barrel, anything. (TSoH, p. 15)

  • Pujols still has amazing weight transfer. His belly button still moves forward as he begins his swing, even though he doesn't have a large leg kick.

  • Work on balance...too much hip rotation can lead to poor balance. All in all its really great to see you're supporting his desire to practice so much.

  • Check out the son hitting video,he has corrected just about everything. He does slip on the concrete floor a little but I am not worried about that,he doesn't do it in dirt with cleats on.

  • I agree that he needs to work on his balance. Start neutral (50/50), load to 60/40, stride to neutral. On some, but not all of his swings, you'll notice that he comes up on his front hell as he finishes his swing. To maintain the circular handpath he should be rolling to the outside of his front foot. This will faciliate the rotational swing and allow the momemtum to continue on a circular path around his body after contact.

  • And please don't quote Mike Epstein. He uses these things for major swing flaws not for every day practice.

  • Where did I quote mike epstein?

  • I have seen the progression of his swing and not much has changed. I am not sure where you are getting all of these ideas from. Bat on the shoulders...now the bat is off the shoulders but is still flat like being on the shoulders. It takes thousands of swing to change the muscle memory before it become natural. I know you mean well but perfect practice makes perfect, not just practice. I just hope you don't turn him off of practicing or worse the game itself.

  • It was the FIRST practice after getting the bat off the shoulder and I KNOW what the practice drills are for.

That is why we are starting to work the bat up,you don't learn a swing overnight and I realize it takes many swings to get the muscle memory to work.

AND FOR THE RECORD,the setup in the garage was his idea.

We started teaching at the proper contact position and are working from there.

  • The set up in the garage is a great idea. The more swings the better. Im glad he is having a good time. I was not trying to be an arse. Just make sure you keep it fun. Change can be frustrating and hard for the youg ones to understand.

  • He isn't like that, watch the tip and rip and you will see what I mean.He is having a blast and it is one session further than this video and a couple months have past.He is absolutley loving it.

I am working on the head as we speak but I know you just can't teach it all at once, that will frustrate them. The last session he did a great job keeping the head still.

  • who cares how old he is if its not a good swing than its not a good swing. you shouldnt be putting up videos of an 8 year old anyways. it doesnt show anything. what is he some t ball stud? who cares

  • The video is for teaching and learning but hell, you know it all.I post it and take suggestions and pass it on to him.

And that is a pretty damn good swing, especially for an 8 year old.

AND,he has never played Tball you ass.

Time to grow up and go post your crap somewhere else.

  • the kids got some nice bat speed and his lower half looks real good to me except maybe a itsy bitsy hip coil..dont even think 1 plane 2 plane just get the bat tip up and it will happen by itself..very impressed with his quick bat !!!!

  • Yes,the quick bat might be his best attribute.

The hip coil and bat head up and tipped are both next on the to do list.

  • dont worry about getting the bat on the plane of the ball..you want to create a two plane swing with stretch fire and adjustibilty..

good cues barrel up ,coil lower body, tip and go!he also needs to develop a coil on his lower half..while tipping the barrel

  • When contact is made, the bat is on plane with the ball,is it not?

We will get back to learning the second plane shortly and getting the bat head up.

  • Remember he is only 8 in this clip, maybe just turned 9 but very young.

I am definately adding things as we go but I feel it is a mistake to add all things at the very beggining.

We will be working in the garage with the wiffle balls off the T and a little coile is definately one of the things next on the list.

  • get the bat more vertical,,BOTTOM HAND UNDER TOP

  • It's a naturall progression. If you look through some of my videos, you will see the bat on the shoulder. He has been learning to get the bat on the plane of the ball, now we are taking it a step further and learning to get the hands involved.

I agree,he needs to get the bat head up and I was telling him to but this was the first day working on this float and it immediately gave him better timing.
