It's a biblical reference to King Solomon.

I know this comment is old but, it's refering to a bible story. two women claim that they are the mother to a child. so the king ordered the baby cut in two. the real mother gave up the baby so that the child could live. so he restored the child to the mother that conceded. and here he says, "sometimes it's better not to know, holding on to something when you should just let go" I think he's talking about a relationship that soured and not letting go even though it's the right thing to do.
