Are you sure it's 30 pounds of dirt? For my 55g, I got the big bag of miracle gro organic potting soil and I only used about half of the bag to get a 1" layer of soil (I don't think it's 30 pounds)

Is dirting a tank neccessary if you use live plants? I was contemplating adding a plant or two to my 30gal, but I already have black sand in the tank and would like to leave it as is if that's a possiblility?

@Kragoblin its not neccessary but its cheaper then buying all the firts you need to keep the plants healthy and green. a bag of dirt is cheaper then the ferts.
