I swear three years have passed since these Beyoncé's covers of the Etta James songs were released, and I'm still shocked by how completely natural she sounds singing traditional soul music. She sounds like someone born to do this more than anything else. Of course anyone with a bit of musical ear, honesty and knowledge of Bee's performances knew she had it in her, but she just nailed this in any possible way. She is an old soul, WAY more than any other singer of her generation.

The idea behing the film was that all the actors involved portrayed the orignal artist's in their own way, they were not meant to sound like them. The Director was clear about this, and has even said it in interviews, so why comparing them all the time.
They both did great. One is legendary because of her strong will and powerful vocals and because she stood up for what she believed in, which at her day and age was beyond difficulty. The other is a star in todays age and surely will have her chance to be known as a legend. Great job both Beyonce and Ms. Etta James.

Honestly Beyonce really shouldn't be compared to Ms. Etta James. Beyonce's Version to this song is great! BUT! Ms. Etta James is an all time great! Beyonce and others like her draw their inspiration from old time greats like Ms. James. Seriously it's not cool!

B does a good job with this song but it cant touch the original by Etta. B's voice doesnt have that fullness that Etta's has, she's a more lightweight singer but she does real well on it.

The idea behing the film was that all the actors involved portrayed the orignal artist's in their own way, they were not meant to sound like them. The Director was clear about this, and has even said it in interviews, so why comparing them all the time.

They both did great. One is legendary because of her strong will and powerful vocals and because she stood up for what she believed in, which at her day and age was beyond difficulty. The other is a star in todays age and surely will have her chance to be known as a legend. Great job both Beyonce and Ms. Etta James.

It would be like if I repainted the Mona Lisa and put a bird in it and you prefer the version with the bird. It would still be a copy of a Leonardo De Vince Masterpiece.

Beyonce just sings these songs with so much passion, to me much more so than Etta ever did. Its beautiful, I have never heard anyone sing with such emotion, you can really feel and hear it.

@MsDiva96 I'll be the first to say she is very talented. I think she puts on a fierce live show. I just think she is overrated and overhyped and she puts too many vocal runs in her songs. I wish she'd sing just straight. When she sang for Barbra Streisand she sounded lovely and also in Dreamgirls without all the runs. But you know if you enjoy her thats all that matters, im still loving Ego and Why dont you love me but i dont ever want to hear put a ring on it or halo for the rest of my life.

Oh yes, Ego and Why Dont You Love Me are pretty great right? I disagree that she is 'overrated' though, she has earned all that respect and worked so hard to get where she is today. She deserves every single bit of it.
