@yipp3333II I guess they thought a real Echidna wasn't cool looking enough for the games/shows. Then again, the differences between the Sonic characters and the real deal has always been egregious (examples: Espio the Chameleon and Charmy the Bee).

No they're not related to hedgehogs, though they do resemble them. Hedgehogs, echidnas and porcupines all have the same defense tool: special hard, sharp hairs on their backs that we call quills, but it's not because of a common ancestor. Their relation ends with belonging to the class Mammalia. Hedgehogs are members of the Erinaceomorpha order, same as moles. Porcupines are in Rotentia (the rodents); and echidnas belong with platypuses in Monotremata. Here ends the taxonomy lesson. =P
