Actually no one did more for women's tennis than Bobby Riggs. He was the showman that made the Battle of the Sexes happen. He was the one that brought women's tennis to the forefront. Give credit where credit is due.
Before this game Riggs played Margaret Court who was the number one womens player. Riggs was also 55 years old when he played this match. Chris evert was asked by a reporter once what ranking of men's player could navratolova beat. She said... r u kidding, there's highschool players that could beat martina. (don't remember the exact quote but something like that.)
King(woman) was 29 while Riggs(man) was 55. Plus she was the best woman player, not only of that era but probably of all times. So it definitely isnt a great achievement. I'm not questioning the abilities of women & I think women have done better things than that. There isnt anything extraordinary about that.
@dredandmrbears Thanks for the information. But the fact still remains that if you are trying to portray gender equality, then this video + what you said about Wade doesnt do any good. The age was a huge factor.
@theabstentious I would never try to say there is gender equality in sports, but my point is that at the time many people thought a over the hill Bobby Riggs would beat a top woman player everytime out. Billie Jean proved that not to be the case, a small step by todays standards , but pretty big at the time.
I think womens tennis i better than mens anyway - equality for everyone. But this game proved nothing as Riggs was clearly too old!!! Also, equality has to work both ways, which it doesn`t.
@SimonDolan, well, either you're being politically correct or you know nothing about tennis. There are literally hundreds of male players who can easily beat the top woman. Even Riggs, when he was 54, beat Margaret Court, the number one female player at the time.
Where can we buy this entire match????

This was an historic moment in history. Billie Jean HAD to win to change Americans' attitude toward women in athletics.

The women on Tour today do respect Billie Jean King and do show respect for contributions to tennis.

No one did more for women's tennis than Billie Jean. I hope the modern women players thank her as they bank the million dollar cheques.
