God Bless You for posting these videos, I love to follow the space program as well as watch the history on it. I remember this even though I was 3 years old at the time.
Doubtful. Armstrong was known as the best pure test pilot. His experience, including two ejections from crippled craft sealed his status as "the man."
Thank you for composing and posting this and the other associated Apollo 11 videos! TV news coverage is precisely how we all experienced the event, and it's great to relive it this way. Best wishes to you!
Oh changes DID happen with the rotation.... it's just there is not enough space in YouTube comments to really elaborate.(in fact, Pete Conrad could have been first if changes to the Apollo 8 and 9 missions not been made)
If you get the chance, read "A Man on the Moon" by Andrew Chaikin. It is an outstanding look at the Apollo program. It has quite a few "could have happened" stories about the missions and who did what.
No. Deke Slayton and Al Shepard developed the crew rotations well before any missions were planned.
NASA brass wanted to alter the rotation and give the first landing mission to Frank Borman and his crew upon the successful completion of Apollo 8, but Deke Slayton (Director of Flight Crew Operations) dissuaded them from making such an offer. He said that altering the rotation in such a way would have dangerously damaged the moral of the Astronaut corps.
Look at Frank Reynolds' podium at the beginning and note the sponsor... the Tang contract had to be a pretty lucrative deal, considering the story! The quality of ABC's coverage really shows how the network was finally becoming a respectable competitor to CBS and NBC.
Towards the end, Chet Huntley misses the date of the Sputnik launch by ten years... it was 1957, not '47.
Too Bad we Actually, Did Not Go to the MOON. It was all Faked Folks.

Every kid in my neighborhood had to have a model of the Lunar-lander after the landing! Brings back wonderful memories! Well Done!!!

Buzz Aldrin got screwed. He landed on the moon at the same time as Armstrong. Big deal, Armstrong got to walk on the moon first

What if you're an astronaut, and you just hate eggs? Is there a dehydrated fruit option, when you work for NASA....???

on myspace talking about what kid they don't like and what they purchased with their parents money.
Either that or assuring each other that it was all a hoax.

Did Brinkley say "October 4, 1947"? He meant '57 if he was talking about Sputnik...

I was 4,5 years old and living in Bedford Hills NY at the time, and I can remember watching newscoverage like this with my parents.

This is fantastic. Wish I could have been among those crowds at the Cape that day, but unfortunately I wasn't born for another 4 years!

Thanks so much for this! It's great that TV coverage archives still exists of this, as RTE in Ireland and the BBC appear to have lost their coverage.
