I have a question, most other brands that are far more popular and easier to find than this series will tell you to get replacement pencils from local stores or online websites, then when you go out and try to get one replaced, you'll stumble upon the fact they don't have the color you need, if this happens to the most common series, then I wonder how hard it must be to get this particular pencils replaced or are they not?
I been spending weeks thinking and researching for a pencil that has lightfast quality, good break resistance, good bloending, great range of colors and not prone to wax-blooming. I looked at people's works with them and reviews. Faber-Castell sounds like it meets all my needs. Call me crazy, I haven't used Faber-Castell pencils in my life and I already went to DickBlick yesterday and bought the 120 tin set of Polychromos. I cannot wait til they arrive!
@Kiwikick238 I've had good luck with the Staedtler it has two holes and is circular. It's blue on top and silver in the middle. Just Google it and you'll find it on Amazon. I tried many others but this seems to work the best. Good luck.
I really like the pencils and it's from a perfect quality for my comic books, but I have a serious question.
Is there a tutorial of how to draw a ball (or something else) with the shading and the colouring with the Polychromos pencils? In the way she is drawing it?
I tried many times to draw something like that. But then the shading looks weird, the other time the colouring is too dark, etc.
I couldn't see and hear enough to draw a good ball
I have been looking for some new pencils and decided to watch this video to give me an idea about the Polychromo pencils. However, the video does Faber-Castell no favours whatsoever as the camera angle shows us more of the artist's hand than what she is doing with the pencil! Did nobody in Faber-Castell watch this video?...........
@hilsrgr8 Thank you for your feedback. We apologize for the poor camera angles. However, we would highly recommend watching our "On the Go" video instead. This video has won numerous awards including both the Telly Award and an ADDY award.
It's unfortunate that this video is shot over her left shoulder so that most of the time what she is doing is blocked from view. I'm trying to decide whether this is might be the type of colored pencil I'm looking for, but videos of the Polychromos in action are rare. Anyone with links to such videos, I'd appreciate them.
I've just invested in 120 set tin of thes epencils. Glad I made the right decision and it was based on your video here. They are lovely pencils to work with. A bit pricy but better than spending money on tobacco.
I was looking for information on Faber-Castell polychromos pencils when I found this video. I recognized the work from Botanical Drawing in color. I'm hoping to improve my own drawing skills.

What is the best choice of paper for Polychromos? I have a set of them, but as yet I can not find a surface that gives me a nice finish - I usually like to use watercolor paper, but I found the Polychromos a little difficult to use on it.
@pyrofella For my experience so far the best paper for Polychromos is Fabriano 5 HP, it is a smooth watercolor paper; watercolor papers can be different so if you haven't done it yet, you could try this too; other types that I like are Stonehenge and Canson Mi-Teintes back side.
To get a nice finish you have to do like they show in this video, sharp point pencils and keep going. The technique they show here works well with the papers I mentioned and a bit of practice :) I hope this helps!
I have a few of these pencils but can't seem to avoid the lines when I color with them. What is the trick to this ? I am not an artist but use them to color my stamped images. When I watercolor I use color to blend but have not idea how to use these.
you can choose according to the type of work that you do. if you made comics or little sketches prismacolor, if you made portrait or landscape polychromos is you horse battle.
I have wax-based Prismacolor pencils, and I hate them because I can NEVER completely cover the paper with them: the little white spots show through no mater how much blending I do.
Do the oil-based Polychromos give true, smooth 100% coverage?
Thanks for the question. Polychromos pencils will allow you to completely cover the paper versus the wax blocking that you experienced with another brand. Heavy Wax filler in other brands causes this problem as well "waxy bloom" problems (foggy wax-film rising to the surface after art is complete that has to be tediously removed). Thick 3.8 mm leads are SV bonded (glued the entire length of the barrel) allows you to put thick rich color down in layers without worry about breaking the lead.
@AnnihilatingAngel Those little white spots are a result of something under your paper, and/or damaged paper. Prismacolor pencils are strictly a layering pencil, best used after applying a color wash to the paper. Prismacolors are really only useful for artists willing to put more than 20 hours of work into a piece. Also, you must use paper with more tooth. The paper you use is a MAJOR factor in the performance of your pencils.
@AnnihilatingAngel They give smoother coverage than other coloured pencil brands I've used, but they don't cover the paper 100% the same way oil paint does, for example. That's just the nature of coloured pencils. Polychromos don't work well with all kinds of paper, but they are very good when you do find the right paper. (I'd pick them over Prismas though, b/c they aren't as smudgy and they don't break every 10 seconds.) Just thought I'd give my POV because I'm not actually trying to sell them.
I only have 30 too... :( but it's better to start that way... learn to take the best of few colours and then you will be great managing a set of more colours.

I find that Faber Castell Polychromos also adjust to water. They don't work like watercolours, but they have a nice affect.

Hi there, can anyone tell me the difference between Polychromos and Prismacolour pencils?

prismacolors are waxy and creamy leads. Polychormos are a bit oily and draw like a pastel pencil.
tecnoborg75 2 years ago
Which would you suggest?
