Since there seems to be an almost one-to-one correspondence in the movie between fictional characters and real-life country artist I always thought the Christina Raines character was supposed to closely resemble Emmilou Harris at that time. The look is uncanny. Ronnie Blakely is Loretta Lynn, of course, and I guess, Henry Gibson most closely resembles Hank Snow. I love his song "Keep a' Goin'".
Cristina Raines always expressed disappointment in her musical performance in this film, but boy is she good!! Very sad that this isn't on the soundtrack album.
My favorite part of this scene, and possibly the whole film, is at the end of the song when Mary turns towards Tom. Altman did such a great job of capturing everything she wanted to say with something as simple as a look. R.I.P. the master of character drama.
Paul, the critics loved Nashville. Roger Ebert, Pauline Kael (who got into trouble for reviewing the unfinished film and others immediately identified it as something special.
Gary Busey wrote it. I love this movie. You know the idea of having a family with deaf children sort of hits you after you've watched the film and begin thinking about some of the scenes where Jeff Goldblum ,Barbara Harris, or Shelley Duvall communicate completely with their behaviors. Come to think of it, Lilly's deaf son spoke more than any of the characters played by these people. I wonder what the critics made of this movie. They probably said it was awful, but what do they know?
Love how Cristina Raines clears her throat at around 2:58...but nonetheless, this movie is a masterpiece for those that haven't seen it...thanks for posting!
one of the greatest films ever made

What ever happened to Christina Raines? She was in soaps and guest starred on TV shows like "Murder, She Wrote" in the 80's.

Most of the actors in the movie wrote their own songs--makes me wonder if Gary Busey was originally supposed to play "Bill"?

I love how "It Don't Worry Me" makes an appearance here. Great foreshadowing.

To think Christine Raines had never sung and she pulls it off with no effort.
