The FSC556 is a comp (muzzle brake). FSC - Flash suppressing comp - is designed to give as you competition level control while suppressing enough flash to keep it out of your optics and line of sight.
It obviously does a decent job of suppressing flash if people keep testing it against flash hiders. :) BATFE also ruled it as a non-flash suppressing device, so you can have it in all your commie states.
Wow those ABSOLUTELY SUCK compared to the Vortex Flash Hider. The surefire looked ok, but the other two were junk. Funny thing is, the PWS FSC556 is twice the price of the Vortex flash hider, and just as ugly. Wow, thanks a ton, you helped me out deciding which way to go. Any info on a good muzzle break with some flash suppression built in? Don't want to pay the $430 that KAC wants for the triple tap, but would pay $100 plus for a decent can break with some flash suppression. GREAT VID!
Yeah, nothing does jack squat for sound unless you can legally have a can.
Otherwise I'm getting a Vortex and a YHM that is a brake & flash hider (or stated as such). The YHM has a video here on Youtube by nutnfancy and it's nice. The Vortex has a video by the manufacturer Smith Enterprises and it is incredible. Check them out.
Thanks again, good vid and it shows the surefire is much better than the PWS.
The only muzzle brake in the history of ALL rifles that had a muzzle brake that reduced sound was th Colt model 639 mor commenly knowna s the xm177e1. i was actually used as somewhat of a sound moderator because of its internal smll baffles which were permanantly welded in! I own two of them one from frankford arsenal and one from Colt
@GunWebsites There is one that does reduce muzzle blast and sound. It is the early XM177 moderator. Not being an actual suppressor, It does signifigantly lower muzzle blast and sound but only enough so that you dont blow out your eardrums firing in a small room or tunnel. looking like a stretched out A1 birdcage it looks nothing like an actual silencer. But ATF still considers moderators to be suppressors, so you still need the paperwork and $200 to own one legally. Nodakspud makes a retro copy.
@kennyjwi The PWS isn't designed, or ruled by the ATFE as a flash suppressor. It's a muzzle brake that has a little bit of flash suppression as a bonus. No brake has anywhere near the flash suppression of a true flash suppressor as it's made to do something different.
@Unicorn161 Yet the PWS still managed to suppress flash better than an A2 birdcage. I have one on my AR and it really takes care of muzzle flip, it's painful if you are standing adjacent to the barrel though as the person filming found out. The PWS is meant to be an effective middle ground for both compensation and flash suppression which it does well. Also keep in mind a shorter barrel will have a bigger flash (shorter barrel=more unburned power after the bullet exits, unburned powder flashes)
Try the vortex, or the YHM for the 6.8. I'm sure they make them.
The Yankee Hill is supposed to be a muzzle brake too, but the vids I have seen there is an occasional spark, no barrel flash. The Vortex is just a hider, and a complete one at that.

The AAC Blackout and the Smith Vortex are the two best flash suppressors you can get, not including sound suppressors. I have a Vortex on my AR-15.

thanks, but this was just a spur of the moment test, not like we set it up in a controlled environment
no muzzle breaks I know of can lower sound, best they can do is divert it

that's impressive what the PWS was able to do given it's a muzzlebrake as well. it definitely out-performed the a2.

Surefire = $80+
This is just one (non-scientific) video too..
I urge you to do more research before replacing your A2, they are not necessarily bad or anything
Also these were all short barreled rifles, yours might be longer (more time for powder to burn inside)

Crap, the AR I've ordered at an A2 Birdcage. I'll have to pick up a Surefire.
