  • Am I the only one who noticed the HUGE speed difference?

    I know psi can make a huge difference but speed sure does too

  • @tundralover The difference in speed was because he could not get traction and the tires were simply cutting through the sand. When the tire pressure is dropped, you're able to gain more speed because you aren't digging into the sand. So yes, there was a difference in speed, but only because you can't pick up speed when you're tires are just spinning.

  • @TwiddyOuterBanks yeah i know how sand works but i mean there was a HUGE speed difference and the first time he wasnt even throwing sand so he wasnt spinning too bad

  • @tundralover We're not trying to fool anyone here, just help out our first time beach drivers. Both times he started from a stand-still. He simply was not able to pick up any speed because the sand was soft and he was spinning. If you know sand, you know that airing down makes a world of difference. You've got to admit though, he jumped right out of that hole once he aired down :)

  • was that truck's recommend pressure 60 psi or you just happen to have 60 pounds in those tire?

  • @prandomable That was the recommended psi for this truck with those tires.

  • Or you can get some better wider off road tires like the goodyear duratrac or mickey thompsons. Then you don't have to air down as much.

  • @blackhawk5674 This is in Swan Beach, on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The 4-wheel drive area just north of Corolla to be exact.

  • 30 psi is the recommended pressure for my 4X4 SUV...how much should I air down for driving on the beach?

  • @7150285 We generally recommend around 20 psi, but of course the lower the better. But I'd start there and if you get into a situation where you're having a hard time you can always air down a little more.

  • wow... anyone who benefits from anything you say shouldnt offroad... you just say things that are common sense, especially to any offroader

  • @Kawasakiforlife7 These videos are for our guests that rent in the 4x4 area of the Outer Banks and have never driven offroad before. It's a basic video for some of our guests who are about to drive on the beach for the 1st time, so we cover all the bases for them.

  • You're absolutely right so no need to worry about the ignorant comments. Thanks for the demo. A lot of people will benefit from this. The only real problem with airing down is where to get the air to refill when you get back on the highway. People need to be careful going any kind of distance or speed with deflated tires. Especially if they are towing a trailer.

  • @tj548p Good point there. We've got you covered though! For our guests that stay in the 4x4 we have 5 pumps for free use in our parking lot. We're that serious about getting our guests to air down before driving on the beach. We even have what we call "Air Force One" on Saturdays in the summer. These guys help guests fill up their tires before they depart for the week. We try and make it easy!

  • Measured traction tests: about a factor 2 (TWO!) more traction with the right (low) pressure in soft sand.

  • a simply ratio here.... the more surface area in contact with another surface, the wider the area of weight distribution. also, that larger the surface area at the point of contact the more resistance there will be between other surfaces. surface area increases as he lets air out of the tires.

  • those are LOAD tires probably 10 ply for a 2500 truck ... regular suv tires or 1500 truck tires would do way better

  • @hattiesburgboys Actually if you look at it again, we started driving in the exact some place. So the only difference between the two attempts is that the second one we let the air pressure out. Makes a huge difference, we promise.

  • @TwiddyOuterBanks no you went alot faster the second time. yes lower pressure helps but to show how much you need to start off at the same speed...

  • @ryan0929931 We went faster because we had traction that time. The tires started to dig immediately with full tires. Regardless, we're just trying to show our guests with no 4x4 experience the best tools to get them safely and easily to their 4x4 vacation home. And the #1 tool is lowering tire pressure (aside from using a 4wd vehicle of course!).

  • wider wheelbase= the same amount of weight being distributed over a larger area meaning instead of sticking a needle through the sand you're sticking something wider like say a can which can still go in but not nearly as easily

  • OK "Thegrantman83" I can tell you have never driven on the beach. Watch the video again and you can see the front tire spinning - thus it's in 4 wheel drive - DUH. With a truck that size running 7 lbs could cause the tire to roll off the rim on a hard turn so 10 to 15 lbs is best. Make sure you know what you're talking about before you open your pie hole.

  • u should give me a job teaching u and all ur staff how to 4wd and run these videos, then they would be helpful, this is the third video of urs that i have watched now and what is the point of spending time making these videos when u really dont have a clue how to 4wd, all ur doing is wasteing space on the internet and teaching people the wrong thing, a getting stuck in 2wd then putting it in 4wd to get out pure brilliance NOT! and u can let tyres down to 7psi if u need to but should run about 12

  • I keep 70psi in my tires. I went to the beach a couple weeks ago and didn't air them down. All I do is drive in the loose sand and pull people out. Then again, my tires are Goodyear mtr's with kevlar

  • i got those same tires now, firestone destination ATs on my truck now and ive drivin many times on the beaches in corolla and hatteras before i was just wonderin if those tires do any better on the beach than a basic road tire, i know the key is to just air down the tires and use 4wd i was just wonderin if u noticed any different in traction with those tires
