Excellent prin., need for mid sized farms. Brilliant, innovative, but like most foo experts, misunderstands Commodity Title, farm subsidies. Subsidies quiet angry farmers. They don't affect price or supply. Lack of "price responsiveness" on both supply and demand sides does that, so we had price floors & supply manag. NFFC. No Price Floor = cheap feed for CAFOs against grassfed/midsize + cheap fructose/transfats. Can't afford health ins., export dump on world Cf "Farm Bill Primer" "zspace"
He talks about Subsidies and Private Sector researching short term problems for short term gains.
The wonderful thing about the private sector is it gives people what they want. Nothing more nothing less. All you have to do is speak with your wallet.
As the old saying goes.. "There's a rhyme and reason for everything" if he'd dig a little deeper, he'd realize that the Federal Government has a lot to do with the situation were in today by interfering indirectly or directly in the food buis,.
I dont know how the united states does things but in canada we have tax brakes for farmers and tax credits for farmers that have a bad year. We also have public health care for every one. We may have to pay more tax then you guys do in the states but its a nice feeling that I am looked after if I incounter an emergency. I hope obama sticks to his 10 years untill healthcare is inplaced. I will keep my fingers crossed.
I am not a farmer, I am a cabinetmaker by trade. A point that I understand very well is about family legacy; I decided years ago that I would not even try to teach my son and daughter the trade that has been hard learned on my part; I too, have had to go "outside" to support the business.
I don't produce food from the utilization of agriculture, but I do produce tangible wealth from natural resources that feed the soul and house the spirit.
I understand this issue well, carefulcarpenter. Artists & craftsmen, at least in US, are not supported in many ways. As with farmers, I think many might go into (or stay with) a creative field if it was more economically viable. Many don't even make enough to afford healthcare for themselves, let alone their families. Imagine the world with no art with no food. Something has to change...
Health care for farmers is an awesome idea. I never even thought that a lack of health care in this industry might be an issue but it makes perfect sense! Health care would definitely be an incentive!

So much common sense, but scarey non the less. I love the bit about strawberries, so very very true, applies to many other foodstuff.

...The Federal Government has done so bad that if it were actually a business, it would have failed a 100x over by now.
So I honestly don't want them involved with my food.
