The rule that a fumble CHANGES POSSESSION TO A TEAM WHO DIDN'T RECOVER IT if it goes out of bounds in the endzone - even though it normally (and logically) goes back to the team who last had possession if it goes out of bounds without being recovered by either team - is one of the dumbest rules in sports. Thankfully it didn't affect this game (except for further hammering in the point that Lett is truly a dumbass).
thats what i call heart (for Beebe obivously) running that hard just to stop a game from being 59-17 to 52-17. every little league/high school football coach needs to show this to their team. much respect Don
Greatest moment in Buffalo Bills history. The game was well over at this point and the touchdown meant nothing for the Bills. Beebe showed so much heart on this play, hustling down the field and causing the fumble instead of giving up. That is exactly how you define heart in sports.
if i was the coach i really wouldnt give shit. i mean it cost us the record for most points in a super bowl but hey we stomped their asses and took home the trophy
I remember watching this thinking the same thing...60 yard run for Lett, and Beebe come out of nowhere to chase him down. Exactly where did he come from?
I got Beebe"s autograph when he played with the Packers. The card shop he was at signing autographs closed and Beebe came out and signed autographs in the below zero temperature for his fans that did not get one. Good guy to look up to.
I'll tell you what's messed up about this, the person who had Cowboys 9, Bills 0 in their football pool missed it by 1/2 yard of stupidity and 80 yards of effort
It's funny despite having 2-3 SuperBowl rings he will always be haunted and made fun of for 2 plays this one and the one on Thanksgiving '93 against Miami
I agree with johnnysama. He was a great defensive player for us even though he made a few mistakes like that one above which didn't really affect the game. The one play that he made that I feel is neglected is the Super Bowl after this one when he caused a fumble that Dallas recovered and went on to score a tying td which was critical in turning that game around.
I never understood why people made such a big deal out of this. Sure Leon messed up, but the Cowboys were on full party mode when this play happened. They beat the Dog Piss out of the Bills that game. Leon could have made a couple more bone head plays, and the Bills would have still lost. LOL, and I'm a Niner fan. I hated those Cowboy teams. Most people remember Lett for his blunders. But I'll remember him as a 3 time champ, a pro bowler, and being a pretty damn good player.
@bugsyg People made a big deal of it because Beebe showed that you never give up until the whistle sounds regardless of the situation. What makes it great is that Leon never scored a touchdown in his career. That's what you get for being a showboat. Don't stop playing until the play is over.
@aelias55 lol, no it doesn't. The Cowboys still won by a huge margin and Lett went on to win two more super bowls after this. Beebe was a bench-warmer with the Pack when he got his ring.
@KennethKaniffFromCT Typical Cowboys fan, I'll just forget about this because your from texas...that must be horrible for you. Anyways, Don caught 40 passes for nearly 700 yards on the way to the packs superbowl, also led the team in Yards per reception, and averaged better on kick returns than desmond howard....sooo clearly your biased claims are unfounded. Don Beebe won the un-sung hero award as well the year the packers won the championship. Highly respected among those inside the league.
@SOADownsnubs I'm not a Cowboys fan. I'm a Steelers fan who think it's moronic to say that Beebe had a better career than Lett just because of this play and a ring he got in Green Bay.
@KennethKaniffFromCT I would expect better from you, Don Beebe had the heart of a lion. But Lett was a behemoth! To compare the two I agree is moronic, but not just because of what your thinking, but comparing two such DIFFERENT players is truly obnoxious. Both of them paid their dues and were crowned as champions, why knock on Beebe man? Sure he wasn't one of the greatest, but he was a solid, blue-collar player that evidenced by this video never gave up on a play no matter what the outlook.
@SOADownsnubs Dude, you should scroll down the comments and see what I was responding to. aelias55 said "Since Don Beebe won a Superbowl with the Packers, I think its safe to say he came out better out of this Superbowl than Leon Lett." Well I disagree with that. Lett won two Super Bowls as a starter and while I agree about everything you say about Beebe being a good, blue-collar player, when he did get his ring with Green Bay, he wasn't a contributor like he was with Buffalo.
@KennethKaniffFromCT EXACTLY, I still can't believe that anybody saw anything in Don Beebe. He had such a crash-&-burn way about him. Beebe was useless.
Don Beebe is my highschool football coach and he talked to his whole team about that play of his determination even though it was a blowout game. DON BEEBE IS BEAST
That is pure hustle. No one would've cared or blamed him if he just left the field, but he wasn't going to lett anyone get in his way. That is the exact definition of heart, determination, and hustle.
Don Bebee must have been in stealth mode. how does he run right by 97 Jimmie Jones at the 15 yard line without any reaction from Jones, even as Bebee is knocking the ball out of Lett's hands Jones still has no clue the white flash has passed him by. All Jones has to is stick his arm out to somewhat slow down Bebee and Lett scores easily. Yes, Lett is an ass for celebrating to early but Jimmie Jones deserves some of the blame as well
Sadly, Myles tore the anterior cruciate ligaments in both knees during his Cowboys career — the first of those injuries came in Super Bowl XXVII when he was celebrating a touchdown, according to the Dallas Morning News.Former Cowboys linebacker Godfrey Myles dies at 42
@latinoheat361 yeah that totally should've breaked the 49ers 55 score record lol but still anyways 49ers holds the most point margin record of the super bowl what can you do :(
Let's be fair. Leon Lett was actually a pretty good player who made a couple of really silly plays. The Thanksgiving thing is more excusable because Lett didn't play special teams all that often.
Everything I've heard suggests Lett's a pretty nice guy, so eh, it happens.
I went to one of Don Beebe's camps and he told us about this story and the aftermath of how Leon Lett used to get death threats from gamblers...apparently if he scored that TD a lot of people with the numbers on that game would have won money.
And Beebe's reward for the outstanding effort? Leon Lett's big ass falling on him and nearly twisting his head completely around. When Beebe stands up you can see he's looking out his ear hole.
As a long time Bills fan, this was like my only highlight for a four year stretch.
Don Beebe deserves a lot of credit for what he did. Despite a blowout game, he still hustled. Nowadays, the overpaid morons on the field would've just watched and pouted like babies.
so much 4 mr lett but despite everything the cowgirls had a great line who done their job the bill had a great team and beebe hustled his ass off great old school football..but lets go E A G L E S
@Archie8Manning dude he coaches at aurora christian school... which is where i go its pretty cool havin him as my coach hes pretty scary tho sometimes
@HUcrew4LIFE2825 Yeah, I didn't feel like specifying lol. I just said "High school coach" out of laziness. I didn't know what he was completely. And how is he scary?
@NightmareTeeVee Not sure. I don't know much about football. I only figured out who Don was because he sat by me, and a lot of his family works at Chadron State College.
Don Beebe showed incredible desire on this play. He's running a pattern, at least at the Dallas 20 or 25 yard line, the ball is fumbled at the 37, then closes ground so quickly. No one would expect him to make a play on this. He sprints 80 yards in a blowout game. That's commendable.
I am a Dallas native and lifelong Cowboy fan. However, I became a fan of Don Beebe after that play. I coach kids now and this play that Beebe made just illustrated everything I have ever tried to teach about ALWAYS playing hard no matter the score. Don showed a tremendous amount of character in this one play, and he showed himself to be a champion even though his team got blown out.
