A very tender and nuanced rendition of a song that chokes me up every time I hear it. Don McLean is a very gifted songwriter, and Chet's talent was perfectly suited to play this song. Very touching.
McLean unfortunately loses focus in the final verse. The “frameless heads” are probably busts of Packer Hall of Famers in Canton, Ohio; the “silver thorn” could be a Super Bowl Trophy; and the “bloody rose… crushed and broken on the virgin snow” is possibly a reference to Al Rose, who played end for the Pack in the 1930’s. The rest of this is just babbling.
@irishace11 I was wondering the same thing. He had reached the status of a guitar god long before he died. The Chet Atkins Appreciation Society (CAAS) is still a huge annual draw to Nashville. He's respected and revered by guitarists of all genres, including classical and jazz. The general public obviously thought highly of him; he recorded well over 100 albums, all of which did very well. Who does that leave to underrate him?
@BarerMender Well, maestro, see how clean you play when you're that age. Obviously, you don't know timeless talent when it walks up and smacks you in the face.
@BarerMender Friend, listen to him when he was younger. One of Chet's greatest attributes was how incredibly smooth his playing was. Also, he's playing an acoustic guitar with a pickup in it. They inherently lack the smooth quality you normally get out of an acoustic.
@BarerMender thats like saying when a legendary marathon runner comes out of retirement at 80 and runs 27 miles that he "Should of run 35 miles!!!" i can clearly tell you you have no idea how hard it is to play this piece of music at 25!...................never mind 65!!..........the faculty that man has at his age is unsurpassed!!
Chet Atkins lets you feel what is inside of him with all of his music. His music makes me what to practice more because he inspires me! I am a young guitarist and I what to keep his style around, seeing as talent like his is starting to fade! You are my hero!
Incredible...bass notes, middle notes and melody..softly played...lets hope in heaven this guy is around by the time I get there...play myself for 40 years...but man...speechless..
0 dislikes, let's keep it that way.

Underrated by whom? He's universally regarded as one of the best who ever lived.

This is the most peaceful piece of music I think I've ever heard. Chet is the man though, no surprise.

He really puts the music across. But (while I admit he plays rings around me) for a professional guitarist it could be cleaner.

No guitarist worth his/her salt underrates Chet Atkins, and who cares about anyone else?

I couldn't help but chuckle at 'underrated' as I have always heard Chet was one of the best in the world, and I think most would agree.
