Hey Robert, that symbol has a vulgar meaning in Italy, "mano cornuto". The great Ronnie James Dio started to use that gesture when he was in Sabbath and it got very popular, everyone started to do it, its very rock n roll.

P.S - Dio´s italian grandmother used to ward off the evil eye with that gesture! That´s where he got the idea.

I watched Soul Man in the 80's when it first came out. Can't say that I recall it being that funny.
