Ive owned a TIVO series 1 for 8 years, Used Windows Media Center, Used Linux MCE, Archos AV720 and of course my brighhouse DVR. By the far the best one for stability and functionality has been my TIVO. the Archos was cool as it was a pocket device and could record TV and be watched back on TV or on the inbuilt screen. Brighthouse scientific atlanta DVR sucks. Check out my posts on examples of just how bad
The best DVR or DVD recorede is one like the old VHS machime. Without turning the TV you can turn the VHS machime and togle up down channel and time on and off or just push a button for 30,60 ect minutes Not navagate through a bunch of menues. And my vhs can start instant unlike the DVD wait 40 seconds to scan the disc.
Dishnetwork has new hd dvrs that you can hook external usb hard drives up to 750gb, and also have a portable player you can upload your recordings to and wach them on the go, and the base code for these new receivers is linux... the possibilities
Here in Australia our Cable TV network is Foxtel and they have a DVR called "IQ". It's pretty awesome. Obviously, always running out of room. It's missing a search-by-word function like TiVo has.
BUT you can login on Foxtel's website and tell your IQ to record an upcoming show. That's pretty cool!
I really need your help. I have low disk space on my computer. I deleted all the stuff i don't use anymore. Like all the programs. And yet it still is low. What else can i do. I don't want to buy another thing to hold stuff. Oh if this helps it is on the System_sav (d:)
Dish and Direct Dosent Support TiVo

Hold your breath.
2) Copy all of these steps.
3) Go to two other video.
4) Paste it in the comments.
If you can do all of this without breathing you're a good pot smoker

MythTV certainly has more features and more hackability.
If you are only interested in something that is an "appliance", then certainly a Tivo is the way to go.

If you have a TeraByte Pvr is good if you don't care about computers that much.
XBMC if you want your own MediaCenter/Pvr.

As Chris said it depends, however if a DVR is able to transfer files to a Computer thats what makes it the best DVR in the world.

I use Windows Media Center and I love it. My only problems have been hardware related. MythTV is also nice.
