Capitalism is an internally stable economic system, in that it is consistent with human behavior. People understand that life is not fair - there's no "free lunch". You have to work to survive. As long as there is a belief/hope that one can advance in the system, there is an incentive to participate.
I believe that capitalism is the most appropriate economic foundation for a large, diverse nation. This must be accompanied by open competition and diversity - which I believe depends on freedom of expression, free access to information, and education.
In times of plenty, capitalism should be tempered by socialistic mechanisms that aid the needy/sick and support the arts.
Very well said and well spoken. A breath of fresh air from the profanity and broken english that is illustrated in the videos from the protestors. Anger, envy and jealousy is the root of all evil.
There was looting on the streets of Vancouver yesterday. I saw this coming. I woke up one morning last week and thought I might try and do something about it. Every time you blame someone or something else for the problems in the world you are giving away your power to actually do something about it. Stop blaming start doing.
Coca-Cola makes fizzy water and markets it well. Because it does this it feeds millions of regular people. I have a buddy who is s truck driver for Coke who is getting loads of overtime thanks to the games. Im sure his unemployed wife and two kids appreciate that.
and in poor countries Coca-Cola makes their Cola with a cheaper price tag than the water that they bottle. So that the poor buy Cola sooner than water. Coca-Cola over prices their water which forces them to purchase Coke. So Coca-Cola may be feeding your friends family. But at the same time Look what they're doing to others.
I work for a corporation. Its a mid-sized Canadian based hotel chain and I am low-low level management. Corporations feed a lot of families. The better we are at running the business, the more families it feeds. I look around this morning and see more staff here than would normally be here in the middle of February, and this is due to the Olympics.
Wow. A lot of sunshine on this page. To all of you who hate corporations so much: who made your toaster? It's easy to demonize and blame but at the end of the day corporations by-and-large act with integrity, if they dont, they get found out pretty quick. See Enron. If you know a corporation that is not acting with integrity call them out on it! The media would love to broadcast your finding.
Patriotism is small minded and divisive. Corporatism is exploitative and sociopathic. Pretty soon people will be imprisoned and tortured for bad-mouthing the wrong corporation.
Is people like you that makes me sick, let me guess you live in yaletown, taking this video with your iphone, supporting the corporate world. you mentioned that you've been around the world! obviously only to resorts where only the mighty dollar talks meanwhile corporations like coca cola are exploiting the local people working for peanuts so you can enjoy your cold drink, wake up and give yourself a shake to see the real issues.
Do you even have clue what rights are being taken away with your olymics. The olymic committee gets free education for their kids, at your schools and your expense, homeless are hidden, rents go astonomic, and a bunch of prima dona play at your tax dollar. The buildings and other structures will be derilect in a year.
You are ignorant and uniformed. As a senior and a canadian I am ashamed of what the gestapo have done and are doing in Vancouver.
good video but seriously though, why would you even bother with theese protesters. They are a bunch of lazy fuck who are always drunk and high and blame the world for all their problems. You could buy theese fuckers out with a case of beer.
@gene screwbar.......sounds like you would rather live in a facsist 1984 big brother state where nothing is allowed that the goverment doesn't allow,i might not agree with every peaceful protester but i agree that every canadian has the RIGHT to protest, you need to grow up a little bit and take your rose colored glasses off
how is it that you can decide "it's not appropriate",the idea behind a protest is to get your message out to AS MANY people as possible, wouldn't it make sense to protest when there are 1000's of media in town.use your brain bud.
@oleman1969: And here I thought the idea was to actually get all those people onside with what you're selling. Silly me, I guess disrupting traffic and creating even more logistical nightmares for tourists and residents really IS the way to go. And I suppose letting the media's coverage of your event control the perception of it - they will spin it however they like, and they have a vested interest in the broadcast of the games - is a good idea, too. So, yeah, carry on...
Well said, Mr. Miller. Everyone has a right to protest, everyone has a right to be heard. I agree with the protesters that there are big social issues that need to be address, but we also need to take time to celebrate the triumphs in life and the excellence of sport, music, art, and culture that will be highlighted during the games. There is always room for improvement in all we do, but this time, Canada, let's show our pride, acknowledge the shames, and work towards harmony. "Go, Canada, Go!"
@TrevMillar I still love you too, Trevor. I really don't care that much, I just wanted to comment for the sake of the argument. What IS your reason for this? You seem almost.... religiously attached.
@rhymepays. I watched the news last Thursday and saw the protesters press conference, they were REALLY angry, but said they were planning on a peaceful protest. I saw that the two didn't fit, and know thay if 1000 people show up that angry, there's a big potential for violence. I'd rather not have violence at my doorstep, so figured that I've been making these silly YouTube videos anyway, I might as well make one about this... cool?
@TrevMillar very cool. im on the island, but i'll be attending a hockey game on the 23rd, and youre right... violence sucks and to have it close to home is a scary potential. keep on keepin on, my brotha.
just an elitist motivated by financial investment in the city. he doesn't want to risk losing his own assets or getting deeper in debt so he speaks for the natural community of citizens with his eggs in the baskets of corporate greed. what a shameful stunt you pull, mr. millar.
@genecrewbar my comment is far from vacuous. it's hard for simple minds like yours to distance yourself from commercialism and think for yourself. if youre supporting a guy that gets on the skytrain only to pester its commuters with promises of freedom and "3 free books", then you are as lost as trevor is. do yourself a favour, cancel your cabel.
@rhymepays : And you dare castigate others for supposed "elitism"? Yes, clearly your vanguard mind is far too open for we commercial drones to comprehend your lofty thoughts. Ignoring your deflection into ad hominem on myself and Mr. Millar (is that what passes as decommercialised thought?) the point is that if you're trying to get people onside, using an overwrought and clumsly dialect is "simply" a bad move. And it's really boring at parties, too.
It's not just anger that begets anger, this ridiculous plea is only going to double people's efforts to make sure their voices are heard. You clearly don't understand why people are protesting this event, and that is not going to warm you up to anyone. The anger in people's hearts is justified and telling people not to be angry rarely works.
The right to protest is the right of all Canadian citizens. The games mean different things for different people. For some it represents a unity between nations, you spoke of family, but for some it represents needless financial sacrifice on behalf of social programs in the province of BC. A lot of wrong things have been done to make these games possible, and I invite you to speak to anyone who has been negatively affected by them and still ask them to lay down.
@armord2tehcore : If your problem is with the government, contact the government, or protest in front of the parliament buildings - if you can bother to get your self over to Victoria. The trouble with the protest isn't ideological, it's tactical and strategic. You're wasting time and energy and will more than likely piss off the people you need on your side (yeah, you don't like to say it, but the Middle Class is the real target of The Left) to make any kind of real, permanent change.
And why did you erase my comment when a said your a cop? Its cause your a Pig isn't it.
