Not all cannibals are black there are Australian and cannibals that butchered near Norway. Either way it's putting all races down. Yes another race made a mistake but that was 100 years ago. Cannibals are indeed misled to eat people thats what attracts adventurous writers to them. It wasn't racism but survival.

@madrussiangirl1205 Yes. Televisions became commercially available in the late 1920's, but this short was actually released theatrical and later banned by Turner Broadcasting in the 1980's when they acquired the Popeye shorts. It very likely did air on TV prior to that though.
dumbasses screaming racism....in a sense, if that is depicting an african american tribe of cannibals...are you people suggesting that there is no such thing, nor ever was, cannibalistic african american tribes? pft...people just want somethin to bitch about
@belladiaz89 yeah...that is what I was thinking! How are they going to make all those breads and doughnuts if they don't have any eggs..and if you have eggs, then you must have some chicken...obviously, human flesh is a real delicacy for them...
Thankfully, it's racists like @Catuxalina who are now a minority. Your time is over. Step aside to make way for a better future in which humanity functions as one!
Okay, enough of the racist card. if you'd crack a history book or watch any type of movie based on the time period that the cartoons and movie's your calling racist were made in you'd realize that the portrayal of the people shown in the cartoons was acceptable back then. Obviously it wasn't correct, but it doesn't mean that you can call something racist just because you don't like it. Acknowledge that at the time that's how it was and get over it.
Did anyone realize popeye assembled a nuke with the artillery rounds at 6:06 and that this video was made in the same year as the hiroshima bombing. that more fucked than anything else.
@parsleysprigs Actually, the nuke was dropped in august, whereas this episode was release in January the 26th of the same year, so it couldn't of represented the bombings at all.
Your all arguing over a children s cartoon. For those of you who feel its racist don't watch it, and for those of you who just think of it as another cartoon enjoy it. And to Icemelle's remark, the producer's never implied that African-American's are cannibals. But there are cannibals of every race in the world ranging from Caucasians to Blacks. Your the racist to blatantly speak about Chinese people because of a cartoon. Its been over half a century since this cartoon was made. So get over it.
they r rude i am a black person n we r not canibals u white chinese ppl r cannibals eat ded pre mature babies i will sue them for disrespecting me not becuz i am a coloured jamaican person gives them the rite to disrespect us boy they juss no how to mek bloodlcaat ppl deprect truh man
@Icemelle actually your the racist one for seeing them as black i didn't even realize that they were suppose to be black i thought they were supposed to be walruses or something.
I guess this was and is a wish that Africans really were Civilized and not low, I.Q.ed savages as they really are. I like such irony in a cartoon; mixing real savagery of Africans with fictitious/non-existent African Civilization. If such a civilzation was real in 1945, it would be at least at the level of America between 1960 and 1970. This fictitious Civilization seems to have an infrastructure even more sophisticated than America's of the time.
@Catuxalina51488B - Actually, my recommendation that you seek psychiatric help has nothing to do with your being racist. Racist will always exist, I've coped with that reality. Your incoherent, ranty and completely demented comment is what's led me to believe that you're mentally unsound.
Imagine, a civilization even more advanced than America at the time and in Africa. Then notice the cannibals trying to eat popeye, when with such a civilization, they would raise cattle and eat them, which they do, in the cartoon. This is an example of irony mixing totally civilized behavior and society with the real savagery of Africans. Too bad this can't be done today. Now if the Africans were really Civilized, there would be no starvation there--and of course, no savagery.
This is an awesome cartoon but I hope to god that the cartoonists who did this were just making parody of the stereotypes that were popular back then rather than actually trying to make people hate black folk.
It's hard to guess the intentions of the creators since they are no longer alive and this was so long ago. Anybody else wondering that too? Btw I'm mixed and I'm not bothered by this.
The way they draw the black people is cool looking in a way. Big lips and the eyes are funny looking
This isn't racism to me. I'm african american. I look at it as this; This black man is an entrepreneur who is running a black owned, black operated business. Who cares if the artists drew it to be that way. There are lots of things that we could be mad at so picking on a cartoon that was drawn in 1945 is ridiculous to me. What are we gonna do; protest popeye so it can be taken off the air?
@thelew99 It still doesn't change the fact that if this cartoon were shown today some whino would complain about it.
This toon and it's many counterparts are extremely politically incorrect now. Nobody feels this way anymore and this type of thinking is very uncommon in '10.
At least I don't think. Haha those republicans may still think in racist ways.
See look! Now I'm being politically incorrect. It's not right to base assumptions about different political parties. A funny world we live in.
This episode can also be seen on the other episode (Spinach vs. Hamburgers) where Popeye tells his identical quadruplet nephews why they need to eat spinach but it short.
Let's see if I have this right.... Blacks can say and do anything they want against whites and it's not racist. If whites do the same thing with the same intent, it's racist. GET REAL. The point of this is this... Whatever blacks do, it's for show only. What they profess and what they do are 2 totally separate things.
So the black guys are serial killers...they've apparently eaten many other white sailors who've gotten shipwrecked on their island. How horrible! Killing and cooking and eating all those unfortunate cartoon honkies.
You are missing the point if you argue about whether this is racist or not. It's so perverted that racism doesn't enter into it. Obviously the producers of this cartoon had a gay masochism problem. Even to this day, Hollywood and the like still use stereotypes about "black" people in films and movies. Never consulting those of us with dignity and respect for ourselves. Only exploiting those of us who will sell our souls for a quick buck. When will it all end? Also, I may have replied to the incorrect person so just ...
@zloteadiana it's supposed to be and exaggerated visual stereotype. it iwas ok back then. but what people forget is EVERYONE looks stupid as a cartoon.
@zloteadiana haha. Actually, cartoons of this time featured some VERY blatant racism. Because it was still the era of segregation. Not only was it socially acceptable to portray blacks in a stereotypical fashion, it was expected. That's just how the time was. This was long before the civil rights movement, and long long before the current era of political correctness in cartoons.
@zloteadiana Dude, you're wasting your time with those wise words. Nowadays people are so freaked out about racism that it's seen everywhere and nobody thinks rationally.
For instance in Finland where I live some authorities forced a liquorice company to modify an etiquette of their product that portrayed two black-skinned humans. They were afraid that some idiot would find it racistic since the picture clearly showed two people from Africa.
@zloteadiana (and other commentators trying to defend this). The taboo here is not simply 'the portrayal of a black person as a cartoon'. It's racist because the black character is a big-lipped cannibal with a bone through his head. It's an outdated, offensive and incorrect stereotype that brings shame upon all of us. The TV executives were right to limit our exposure to it.
@zloteadiana its not about black people fighting, they considered this cartoon racist because of the stereotypical way they drew the black people. (big lips etc.)
@zloteadiana The problem was based on the image of "black" characters in films. If they weren't servants, porters and maids, they were portrayed as slow witted, illiterate, or cannibals. The limitations in the way black people were portrayed combined with the unflattering and simian-like character designs are among the reasons for these images becoming a problem. What's interesting here is that is seems that there are real black actors being used, not white doing black "dialect."
What Popeye said was I haven't done anything like this since I lost a bet on Hoover. I guess in the 1932 election between Roosevelt and Hoover, Popeye voted for Hoover.

Only to a left wing, bleeding heart, socialist liberal, would this be considered "racist".

What Popeye said was I haven't done anything like this since I lost a bet on Hoover. I guess in the 1932 election between Roosevelt and Hoover, Popeye voted for Hoover.
