  • Not all cannibals are black there are Australian and cannibals that butchered near Norway. Either way it's putting all races down. Yes another race made a mistake but that was 100 years ago. Cannibals are indeed misled to eat people thats what attracts adventurous writers to them. It wasn't racism but survival.

  • Ahh stop reading so much into this it's a cartoon chill the fuck ouuttt lol Can't be racist now? then don't do it. Cartoons these days may not be racist but fuck me, they suck ass.

  • And it is terrible the way they portray dumb white people

  • Yes, cannibals are certainly racist. Can't make any jokes about those guys anymore.

  • I'MA FRI'N MY LAZOR!

  • It's a "given" this cartoon is horribly racist. But, the Meat Ration coupons and the little ditty "You take the high rib and I'll take the low rib.." was funny.

  • Why do they ban old kids cartoons just because they're racists.

It doesn't make them any less funyy, besides we were more racist then.

  • how is this banned?

  • Ol'e time racism at its best

  • popeyewith sunglasses=epic win.

  • 4:28

    they've Pluto's face

  • @Tracassin465 UUUUUUUUUUUUUUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH...............,

    Don't you mean "Bluto"?

  • 4:06

    Angel or Demon lol

  • Banned but the cartoon is funny!^^

  • now this is decent cartoons

  • The problem here isn't racism...it's perversion...it's gay sado-masochism.

  • Gee, make a cartoon with all white characters and it's racist....include a non-white and it's racist still? I think it's racist to make race even an issue...Think about it.

  • @madrussiangirl1205 Yes. Televisions became commercially available in the late 1920's, but this short was actually released theatrical and later banned by Turner Broadcasting in the 1980's when they acquired the Popeye shorts. It very likely did air on TV prior to that though.

  • Go tell any afro-american it´s a joke. Imbeciles.

  • There is something about this cartoon that shows the racism of the time... but remember... the country was going trhough a transition.

  • It's not racist

    It's a JOKE!

that's what a cartoon does, makes jokes.

  • dumbasses screaming racism....in a sense, if that is depicting an african american tribe of cannibals...are you people suggesting that there is no such thing, nor ever was, cannibalistic african american tribes? pft...people just want somethin to bitch about

  • @shawndw151 well...ah ranted and didnt pay attention...meant to say african, not african american

  • wooowww I didnt even think about this racist crap til I looked down at the comments, guess I shouldn't be surprised, so sad...

  • they are brown not black duh

  • MAKE WHITE GUYS LOOK STUPID..IT'S OK..BLACK GUYS..HEAVEN FORBID

  • Why can't we all just enjoy this perverted masterpiece of gay masochism?

  • your known I bet the same thing could to bugs bunny but instead of cannibals a group of vixens a.k.a. girl-foxes.

  • with all that food they gave popeyeyou'd think they would have the common sense to eat it (the food) and not try and cook popeye -___-

  • @belladiaz89 yeah...that is what I was thinking! How are they going to make all those breads and doughnuts if they don't have any eggs..and if you have eggs, then you must have some chicken...obviously, human flesh is a real delicacy for them...

  • Ah loves that man!

  • yes cannibalism that's fine but god forbid the cannibals are black!!!

  • 1:22 "There's a man to my taste". Yeah I got the idea that Joe wanted to eat Popeye, although probably not the way the writers intended...

  • GOD DAMN 50's YOU RACIST!

  • @KaminaDies Shut your ignorant stupid fucking mouth and go kill yourself you dog rapeing fuck nugget.

  • Thankfully, it's racists like @Catuxalina who are now a minority. Your time is over. Step aside to make way for a better future in which humanity functions as one!

    Fucking idiot.

  • @llywelynhawk Humanity functioning as one? Impossible, you'd have to be a stupid ignorant person to come up with that kind of theory.

  • Popeye the Racist man, tough to the finish, in each racist scrimmage, he's popeye the racist man! the whistle goes WHOO WHOO! LOL great cartoon!

  • Okay, enough of the racist card. if you'd crack a history book or watch any type of movie based on the time period that the cartoons and movie's your calling racist were made in you'd realize that the portrayal of the people shown in the cartoons was acceptable back then. Obviously it wasn't correct, but it doesn't mean that you can call something racist just because you don't like it. Acknowledge that at the time that's how it was and get over it.

  • Popeye, Bass Monkey- Dee Bradley Baker

    Tenor Monkey- Rob Paulsen

    Baby Monkey- Frank Welker

  • I think the people who thinks that this is racist are the racists themselves. Else how did they get the idea? =.=

So just stop it and enjoy the cartoon as it is instead of over thinking it.

  • I love Popeye cartoons.

  • LOL hes in some south american black country like trinidad or barbados where they practice voodoo and canabalizm.

  • Did anyone realize popeye assembled a nuke with the artillery rounds at 6:06 and that this video was made in the same year as the hiroshima bombing. that more fucked than anything else.

  • @parsleysprigs actually was a block buster bomb. whic are not nukes. but just over power bombs that we dropped on Germany.

  • @parsleysprigs Actually, the nuke was dropped in august, whereas this episode was release in January the 26th of the same year, so it couldn't of represented the bombings at all.

  • Your all arguing over a children s cartoon. For those of you who feel its racist don't watch it, and for those of you who just think of it as another cartoon enjoy it. And to Icemelle's remark, the producer's never implied that African-American's are cannibals. But there are cannibals of every race in the world ranging from Caucasians to Blacks. Your the racist to blatantly speak about Chinese people because of a cartoon. Its been over half a century since this cartoon was made. So get over it.

  • they r rude i am a black person n we r not canibals u white chinese ppl r cannibals eat ded pre mature babies i will sue them for disrespecting me not becuz i am a coloured jamaican person gives them the rite to disrespect us boy they juss no how to mek bloodlcaat ppl deprect truh man

  • @Icemelle actually your the racist one for seeing them as black i didn't even realize that they were suppose to be black i thought they were supposed to be walruses or something.

  • @Icemelle shaddup, its a cartoon, and there are colored cannibals, its a decision a sentient being makes, like Christianity.

  • @Icemelle actually seeing as popeye was the only white guy in this cartoon i dont think you have any right of saying this is racist twords blacks.

  • that racist how they made the black cartoons

  • i seen it on tv

  • i seen on tv

  • @bcmedj

They certainly don't have round eyes like we Whites. They are much like asians' eyes.

  • I'm not saying how they drew black ppl was right. But, it's popeye.. All the characters look rediculous.

  • @bcmedj I agree, and that's precisely why this is a racist cartoon. It makes the black people look like monkeys.

  • @VicTheMouth3612 then watch the modern shitty cartoons that have to be so "Politically Correct"

  • There's A Re-Dubbed Version Of This Cartoon So The Island Natives Sound Like Americans!

    Brian Doyle-Murray-Popeye

Jim Cummings-Ima Cannibal, Baby Cannibal, Various Cannibals

  • I guess this was and is a wish that Africans really were Civilized and not low, I.Q.ed savages as they really are. I like such irony in a cartoon; mixing real savagery of Africans with fictitious/non-existent African Civilization. If such a civilzation was real in 1945, it would be at least at the level of America between 1960 and 1970. This fictitious Civilization seems to have an infrastructure even more sophisticated than America's of the time.

  • @Catuxalina51488B are you serious or delirious?

  • @Asskicker32294

    I am serious! 14/88!

  • @Catuxalina51488B Maybe I'm stupid but what the christ are you getting at?

  • @Catuxalina51488B - you should seek psychological help, asap.

  • @thundernigger

I am happier as a White Racialist and Racist! But thank you anyway! 14/88!

  • @Catuxalina51488B - Actually, my recommendation that you seek psychiatric help has nothing to do with your being racist. Racist will always exist, I've coped with that reality. Your incoherent, ranty and completely demented comment is what's led me to believe that you're mentally unsound.

  • @thunderniggerpunk

Anything you say, my main Vandal jiggaboo.

    Fo'teen Aityait.

  • Imagine, a civilization even more advanced than America at the time and in Africa. Then notice the cannibals trying to eat popeye, when with such a civilization, they would raise cattle and eat them, which they do, in the cartoon. This is an example of irony mixing totally civilized behavior and society with the real savagery of Africans. Too bad this can't be done today. Now if the Africans were really Civilized, there would be no starvation there--and of course, no savagery.

  • its ok today to white boy but not b b get it

  • This is an awesome cartoon but I hope to god that the cartoonists who did this were just making parody of the stereotypes that were popular back then rather than actually trying to make people hate black folk.

It's hard to guess the intentions of the creators since they are no longer alive and this was so long ago. Anybody else wondering that too? Btw I'm mixed and I'm not bothered by this.

The way they draw the black people is cool looking in a way. Big lips and the eyes are funny looking

  • This isn't racism to me. I'm african american. I look at it as this; This black man is an entrepreneur who is running a black owned, black operated business. Who cares if the artists drew it to be that way. There are lots of things that we could be mad at so picking on a cartoon that was drawn in 1945 is ridiculous to me. What are we gonna do; protest popeye so it can be taken off the air?

  • When I was about 8 years old this was shown on TV once.

    Once.

I never saw it again. This is the second time I've ever seen it in my entire lifetime.

I was convinced as a kid that it was one of the weirdest things I've ever seen. I see now that my opinion hasn't changed, lol.

There's a bizarre "dominance" theme that seems to be going on here that makes it feels strange from the usual "guy being eyed by savages" cartoon.

  • The "Who eats who?" final is priceless.

  • by: Ima Canniba

    :B

  • This episode can also be seen on the other episode (Spinach vs. Hamburgers) where Popeye tells his identical quadruplet nephews why they need to eat spinach but it short.

  • lol, 1945 hitler died

  • wow

  • What is the point of showing Popeye's Uvula doing the Tarzan Yell??

  • @rdom41 So you can see it!

  • Let's see if I have this right.... Blacks can say and do anything they want against whites and it's not racist. If whites do the same thing with the same intent, it's racist. GET REAL. The point of this is this... Whatever blacks do, it's for show only. What they profess and what they do are 2 totally separate things.

  • @rdom41 Stupid argument

  • @rdom41 it's unfair I know, but life's never been fair

  • 0:28 Just gotta love his sunglasses.

1:22 an obvious gay joke. Made me lol. :D

    3:02 Educational advice.

4:48 So that's why they call it "Grounded meat"

6:28 Will be continued in "Popeye's Pappy (1951)"

    That's all folks.

  • gagagaga so hilarious.

Popeye and his Spinach never fail.

  • THE FUNNIEST POPEYE I EVER SEEN LOL!!

  • In the original book, Tarzan kills a bunch of canibals at one point. /random fact

  • So the black guys are serial killers...they've apparently eaten many other white sailors who've gotten shipwrecked on their island. How horrible! Killing and cooking and eating all those unfortunate cartoon honkies.

  • Exactly.

  • @Asskicker32294

Really, draw a black guy in cartoons and it's racism. Think about this: both Popeye and Bluto are white. They fight. It's ok still. But say the cartoons were 100% the same but one of them was black. *gasp* RACISM!!

Honestly, you are all stupid idiots. Racism is SO different than this innocent CARTOON!!

  • @zloteadiana

It's the lips and the way they act.

  • @zloteadiana The part you may not understand is this, drawing so called "black" people and I use the term black loosely because i've never seen a black person/ devoid of color nor have i ever seen a white person/ the color of snow. As i was saying, "black" people have always been made fun of in the movies and television. Drawing the lips larger than actuality, having them talk in strange dialect, drawing them with buckshot hair styles, tight spikey braids with barrettes. These types of....

  • @VidManD73..... caricatures aren't being seen as offensive because at the time these types of cartoons were shown, "black" people's feelings weren't taking in consideration. Even to this day, Hollywood and the like still use stereotypes about "black" people in films and movies. Never consulting those of us with dignity and respect for ourselves. Only exploiting those of us who will sell our souls for a quick buck. When will it all end? Also, I may have replied to the incorrect person so just ...

  • @VidManD73 ...this isn't meant for you zloteadiana, it's meant for the person who you were commenting to.

  • @zloteadiana this particular episode, it was probably banned as it portrayed them as all cannibals, which is racist

  • @zloteadiana It's the black face that makes these cartoons racist. It's not ok to make african americans look like monkeys in cartoons.

  • @zloteadiana it's supposed to be and exaggerated visual stereotype. it iwas ok back then. but what people forget is EVERYONE looks stupid as a cartoon.

  • @zloteadiana haha. Actually, cartoons of this time featured some VERY blatant racism. Because it was still the era of segregation. Not only was it socially acceptable to portray blacks in a stereotypical fashion, it was expected. That's just how the time was. This was long before the civil rights movement, and long long before the current era of political correctness in cartoons.

  • @zloteadiana Dude, you're wasting your time with those wise words. Nowadays people are so freaked out about racism that it's seen everywhere and nobody thinks rationally.

For instance in Finland where I live some authorities forced a liquorice company to modify an etiquette of their product that portrayed two black-skinned humans. They were afraid that some idiot would find it racistic since the picture clearly showed two people from Africa.

  • @zloteadiana (and other commentators trying to defend this). The taboo here is not simply 'the portrayal of a black person as a cartoon'. It's racist because the black character is a big-lipped cannibal with a bone through his head. It's an outdated, offensive and incorrect stereotype that brings shame upon all of us. The TV executives were right to limit our exposure to it.

  • @zloteadiana its not about black people fighting, they considered this cartoon racist because of the stereotypical way they drew the black people. (big lips etc.)

  • @zloteadiana Amen.

  • @zloteadiana i think its the lips and the way he talks is kind of stereotypical.

  • @zloteadiana The problem was based on the image of "black" characters in films. If they weren't servants, porters and maids, they were portrayed as slow witted, illiterate, or cannibals. The limitations in the way black people were portrayed combined with the unflattering and simian-like character designs are among the reasons for these images becoming a problem. What's interesting here is that is seems that there are real black actors being used, not white doing black "dialect."

  • @Asskicker32294 Take a Midol, Asslicker32294.

Maybe go have yourself a lie down and try not to think too much.

  • I did too much acid in the seventies and eighties...

  • It's not racist at all. It's funny.

  • What's the deal with showing Popeye's Uvula doing the Tarzan Scream?

  • Comment removed

  • Strange....I always thought that little jingle was "You take the white meat/And I'll take the dark meat/And I'll get the wishbone before ya....."

  • I wonder if any of these guys are related to Obama.

  • this was kind of racist

  • Only to a left wing, bleeding heart, socialist liberal, would this be considered "racist".

  • i mean the way they drew the cannibals, the big lips, the accents, etc.

  • So, if they drew them "not black" then that would be ok???? How hypocritical.

  • First time I'm seeing this gem in its entirety since 1960. Politically incorrect—but oh, so fun!

  • what's he saying at 3:45? I aint done nothing like this since I lost a bet of ??? something? Can you clarify?

  • What Popeye said was I haven't done anything like this since I lost a bet on Hoover. I guess in the 1932 election between Roosevelt and Hoover, Popeye voted for Hoover.

  • @billyk5775

Thanks for clearing that up.I thought Popeye was saying something about losing a bet of poker

  • @diddymuck i think he said since i wet the bed all over
