  • what guitar is jimmy using?

  • ovation double-neck

  • cheers

  • Wow, an Ovation double neck guitar! I think it is a special issue 1994. This guitar sounds great. (Of course Page is the one playing!)

  • what instrument is that guy playing where he is spinning the crank?

  • A Hurdy-Gurdy, also known as a wheel fiddle.

  • It's a Hurdy-Gurdy.

Part of the set list in the tour that followed that performance in London, Nigel Eaton played a solo with that instrument (it was right before Gallows Pole). I recall Robert Plant introducing Nigel and his instrument before the solo to a skeptical crowd (I'm from Montreal...) but actually it sounded bloody good and I wish it can be found somewhere within the YouTube community.

  • Cuanto más lo escucho más me gusta!!!!!

when more I hear more i like it

  • when the devil comes for your soul, that's what'll be playing

  • dokonale...nadherne....

  • love you, dave, the pictures will be ready soon.

  • Great musicians.Welcome and salute from CROATIA.Peace.

  • Just beautiful/ Why is there so much hate music today?

I can relate a personal story: Several years ago I worked with a Muslim who was not following some rules at work that ..

  • =8oO This version does a magnificent job of building momentum and intensity. They're all diggin' it, but none more than Jimmy Page.

Best post-Zep LZ video on "da tube"!

  • Out of this world :)

  • Wow! Most Amazing Band Ever!!!

  • HURDY GURDY ACTION! Heh heh ...

    Fabulous!

  • about the double neck accoustic. one neck is 12 strings. one is 6. for quicker changes between the two different guitars

  • What are the openings chords?

  • Am, C ,C shaped slid up two frets.

    relief is G , D, Am

  • double-acoustic guitar=fucking awesome...

  • wut is more significant about a double guitar? other than it looks badass and hard to do. id love to know.

  • I think that 1337 was aluding to the fact that two people are playing the rhythm part on acustic guitars, which sounds much fuller than when only one person is playing. I don't think he was commenting on the double neck 6/12 string that Jimmy Page is playing. The Eagles are popular for their double, sometimes even triple acustic playing in their songs.

  • bigger body larger sound or better tone...? not sure... but its not that hard to play, just a 12 string on top of a 6.

  • That guy's totally rocking out on the hurdy-gurdy.

  • estupendos, por algo son unos Maestros del Hard Rock .un buen disco este ´NO QUARTER .buenisimo.

  • Speak English. Thanks!

  • The song is actually many hundreds of years old, with versions from as remote as Lithuania and Scandinavia, as well as Britain, and the U.S. Zeppelin does it beautifully, faithful to its folk origins.

  • Scottish, actually.

  • Scottish, amongst others. Scholars and folklorists have studied this song for over a hundred years. See The Maid and the Hangman by Eleanor Long, for example.

  • hang man hangman......

  • Wow

  • great great great great great ...song !!!!!!

  • can't get enough of Page and Plant!

  • It's just fantastic.

  • Is it just me, or does Jimmy look lost on his chord changes at around the 3:30 mark?

Still...JPP was the overall better guitarist that Jimi. Jimi was a one-trick pony. A helluva one-trick pony, but still, a one-trick pony.

  • Page is way better than hendrix any day in the year....

  • My intent wasn't to start a "Who's better?" debate between JPP and Jimi Hendrix.

    Hexdrix was greatness.

I've been playing guitar for years and I can't duplicate what Hendrix did on his Strat. But I get some much more enjoyment from Jimmy Page's songs 100x over than I do from Hendrix's songs.

Overall, JPP is a more, well-rounded guitar player than Hendrix. Simply put, Jimmy Page is known as "The Riff Master" and Hendrix as "The Master of the Stratocaster".

    Both players are greatness

  • Um, did you just call Jimi Hendrix a "one-trick pony"?

    ...Oh, my...

  • Jimi Hendrix had them all beat.

  • Uh.. Jimi's dead. So who beat whom?

  • did not matter he still had them all beat

  • jimi was great, but JIMMY wrote Stairway.

  • this is one of my fav. songs from Zeppelin

  • to all those who say plant lost his voice in the late 70s have a look at this u wankers

  • or at O2's Kashmir !!

  • PAGE IS GOD!!

  • Page is god. Plant is nothing compared to sir jimbo.

  • 54149carol....I absolutely love Zeppelin. They are my favorite band without question. I need to remind you that Plant co-wrote 90% of the music with Page. Without Plant, there is no Page and without Page, there is no Plant. I have never seen another duo write and perform the music these two did. They were the perfect match...They were Led Zeppelin!

  • yes.

  • Lead Belly, ftw.

  • robert plant = best singer ! ! !

  • well

  • Plant, in his prime,l was a god.

  • Er, A god, i meant.

  • Love this so much! Saw it on VH1 Classic :)

  • I love Robert's post Zep voice. Manic Nirvana and Fate of Nations tour!!

  • Page & Plant must have a drummer curse!! Bonham is irreplacable anyhow...

  • like Spinal Tap ? I heard one drummer just exploded on stage....

  • I know a friend who loves jamming on these ...cool stuff man ...way to go

  • anyone know what the instrument is ......the guy is winding somthing around and pushing buttons, have never seen that before

  • Its a hurdy gurdy

  • Yup wikipedia hurdy gurdy lol

  • I think Page plays one on a scene in the film TSRTS.He is sitting by a lake playing something ,and when he looks up his eyes are glowing.Someone correct me if I am mistaken

  • He doesnt play a drummer he is a sorcerer and ages forward and back and he does look up from inside his hood and his eyes glow...its when he is running through trees.

  • Eh? Thats the scene with Page in that movie Abrahamlincoln0900 told us bout? Can ya link it please?:O

  • Oww! can ya link me that scene or sumtin?:O

  • DAMN, that drummer's kicking ass - who is he, anyone know?

  • drummers name is Michael Lee he died last november 2008 he was 39 was the drummer for thin lizzy and the cult

  • Classic performance fronted by 2 of the greatest in rock and backed up by an extremely talented group of musicians. Leadbelly is no doubt smling proudly.

  • flyerhawk, don't forget about Hot Dog.......

  • Nice recording. Any idea when it was actually performed?

  • Music at its finest, and yes, Michael Lee will be greatly missed, may he RIP..

  • michael lee died from an epileptic seizure at age 39. he will be greatly missed.

  • great song live and its funny the video is 4:20 hahahaha

  • this is the only song they did with a banjo - go figure - awesome

  • one of the most underated zepp songs

  • What the hell is the guy at 1:33 playing? The instrument with the turning knob?? I've never seen that before.

  • That's a hurdy gurdy, if I'm not mistaken. I think they're relatively similar to fiddles, but I'm not really sure how they work.

  • An organ Grinder....hahaha...and Plant is just a little monkey

  • Jimmy is theeee shit!!!!!!

  • robert plant look ssoooooo different here!!!!

  • gosh how much i wish John Paul Jones was playing...

  • Michael Lee was awesome - he got to do what so many others did not - He is LEGEND - we all revere him.....

  • Michael Lee really felt the music RIP...and as for Page and Plant the best...love them.

  • when you actually think about the lyrics to this song, that executioner is an ass hole. they give him silver, gold and the guy's sister, he accepts all the bribes, then kills him anyway

  • This is gorgeous! Jimmy Page and Robert Plant Just keep getting better!

  • this is awesome

  • Page Plant Jones Bohnam..4 best ever all in one band

  • What can you say? James Patrick Page is a genius. Mister Plant just solidifies it !!!!!

  • Indeed. Very few have had as much musical prowess as Page.

  • Regardless of how talented Page is, few vocalists can best Robert Plant at singing. He easily has one of the greatest voices in rock history.

  • beauts!

  • Drummer is great. Love the hurdy gurdy too.

  • the Drummer, Michael Lee, died not long ago.

  • Michael Lee was amazing, he truly felt the groove and made it work, he wasn't bonzo, but he did his own thing, and it really bloody worked with Pagey & Plant

Well, if he played with these guys, at least he died happy.

  • Agreed. Guy on drums, very good effort. Overall this is at the top.

  • Stunning version... Note Page at 3:00 clearly enjoying himself... Love that!

  • i remember watching this concert when it came out on mtv i think.

what is that instrument the ones guys playing? the thing he ir cranking with one hand while playing with the other?

  • it's called the hurdy gurdy.....not many of them around, or guys that even know how to play them....glad i can help you

  • Its a hurdy gurdy

  • Plant and Page are very old here...but the song remains the same!

Great voice by Plant...and Jimmy's guitar is too cool!

    cheers

  • INCREDIBLE!! SIMPLY AWESOME!!

  • Great song i love it

  • Getting the led out!

  • Holy crap!!! a double neck Ovation!!!

  • i have this on dvd and it's one of my favorite songs

  • gallis pole written by leadbelly.

  • I don't think he wrote it. I've heard its an old Irish folk song originally.

  • i don't think so. I'm irish, i know my tunes.

    it was leadbelly.

  • leadbelly didn't write it. he just interpreted the version that most people have imitated since. the song itself is hundreds of years old and comes from europe.

  • I concur.

  • brilliant

  • Zepplin ROCKS

  • Best version of this song, it rocks!

  • 40 years later, kicking ass

  • thats a cool looking bass

  • its very good this video

  • did he die? He enjoyed playing these songs so much!! Man , I really enjoyed him during roberts solo albums and tours.

  • Just brilliant, I would not expect anything less from the best band to have ever roamed the earth.

    Lifetime fan

  • What the hell is that at 1:40 & 1:59 ?

I have no problem admitting that I've never seen one before

  • It called a hurdy gurdy, it has wheels inside that the player turns and pushes the strings against

  • Zep. The one and only. How dare Plant NOT tour with them.

  • There are a couple of other posts from that show also, Wonderful one, Battle of Evermore, I think you will enjoy those also.

  • google this Mary2270515, Robert-Plant-Strange-Sensation-Soundstage I think this is the show that was on PBS years ago, wonderful.

  • Plant and Page Grow Older and Older Yet They Can Still Hang. Thats Classic =D

  • Can anybody tell me the name of the acoustic guitar used by Page on this video?

    Thanks!

  • I want to say it's an Ovation and no doubt custom built - but don't quote me on that.
