i came here to see a video of a bad ass working machine but i ended up reading all these comments arguing about 'pollution' (which is fake) why cant the world be as simple as it used to be?
Is that a tridum (triple drive axles) or a twin screw with a tag or pusher? We found in Colorado on the hills that anything over about 600 hp (KTA-600's) in the lower gears exceeded the traction of a twin screw with 40,000# on it. We would get wheelspin and consequently very short tire life. The State would not allow higher axle loading or higher gross loads, so we had to reduce power.
idk if this would work but would it be possable too use 2 3406b jake brake system's and 1 one goes on the left 6 cylinder's and the otherone goes on the right 6 cylinders ? that be cool if it did work
Just a question, how come some trucks belch out tons of smoke and others none at all?, I guess load, etc., but I have seen similar loads of like precast concrete on flat beds, with trucks from the same company that appear similar in age, one smokes the other not? Thanks.
@TARBABY71 i've listened 4 times trying to figure out how it even sounds close to as good as a detroit, let alone better, and i can't. it sounds like a cross between a 3406 and a 3408, which are both lazy and tame sounding. don't get me wrong, i'm sure its a trailer yanker, but it lacks sound character. just my opinion(might be biased!)

@MasterWitchDoctor That smoke is rather CO than CO2, meaning that engine can't burn the gas or diesel totally and has very small efficiency. BTW, CO2 is toxic for human health on long term.
@silverblackss I can tell you've never had a chemistry class. Here's a lesson for you. Carbon monoxide (CO) is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. In other words you can't see, smell or taste it. @MasterWitchDoctor Dude, I'm a chemical engineer and what you say is full of crap. Shut up, stay down and pay attention. @silverblackss but on the contrary, CO2 is beneficial for human health in the long run. in the short term it is detrimental to humans. in the long run there is obviously more CO2 for plankton to photosynthesize, in turn creating more O2 for us, more plankton meaning more food for organisms that eat them meaning more food to harvest. oh and the >10% of our oxygen that comes from the rain forest. so in the long run its better for us :D so suck it and troll some where else. cheers

@kdc43 If you took any of the vaccines of the last 15 years the thimerasol in them is derived from Hg (Mercury) and has been prove by Dr Russell Blaylock and Dr Sherri Tenpenny as the cause.
@kdc43 If you are a "True" environmentalist then why aren't you protesting the genetic pollution coming from Monsanto and its GMO corn line. GMO corn has been linked as the cause in everything from sterility to diabetes to Crohns to heart disease to cancer. These facts aren't even debatable and the fact that genetic pollution is whipping out everything from honey bee's to multiple species of grasses (corn is a grass) is the real environmental issue. Why aren't you protesting that?
@madjimms ROFL @ YOU!!! You want to talk cancer rates? Look up the carcinegins like SV40 in vaccines, or the GMO BT corn. You wonder why cancer is off the chart, there are the 2 biggest culprits which numerous University studies (University of Calgary, University oh Helsinki, Johns Hopkins) have proven. LOL at anyone who believe carbon dioxide causes cancer. You sure are a moron.
@kdc43 doesn't the radioactive iodone 131 or cesium 133 from Fukushima worry you? The EPA's solution was to raise the acceptable limits to not over 100,000 times what they were because the radioactive fall out is being recorded not only all over North America but in Europe and Asia. Deny this look it up and see how many new cases of thyroid cancer have been reported in Wa, Or, and the Republic of Kalifornication. Beside the world is in a CO2 deficient state compared to the Precambrian era
My old W900 with half the engine this things got (3406B) only got 4.8 to 5.5 with a load, so considering double the cylinders and all the smoke, maybe 3 mpg on a good day. Good thing he has the work to support a settup like that. The fuel bills must be ridiculous.
Depending on how far that load needs to go, it could be 10 grand or better. He definitely is not hurting money wise.
I think back in the day there was a reefer company that built a bunch of high speed semis with this same set up ( anecdotal story, you know how truckers are ) and they ran team at 100+mph out west. Only got in the 2's mpg wise, but fuel was so cheap it didn't matter.
@earsneyes1 as far as truck engines are concerned a 600 hp 3406E on a Stuska dyno was hard pressed to hit 500hp. A simular truck with a Signature 600hp cummins was around 620. They burn less and brake down a lot less than the Cat's do. Look under the hood of most every truck broke down on the highway you will see a Cat.Seems like every Cat I see in commercial fishing drop valves. They're living on their laurels, the series 60 Detroit made them obsolete.
@earsneyes1 As far as sound goes, nothing like the sound of a 12v71TI at 2400 rpm. I hear it everyday in my boat with open water cooled exhaust. These 12v71TI's may not be marvels of technology but neither are these cat 34012's. Carlos engine burns 45 gph and only runs 31 knots. Thats 35 mph and less than 1 mpg. My 12v71TI burns 30 gph and runs 30 knots (34 mph) which is a lot more economical and rebuild only cost me 15 grand not 50.
Yea, thats where the KTA Cummins found its way into a truck. It was an engine built for a locomotive but truck dirvers wanted them for their trucks. Eventually Cummins gave in and started helping with the adaptation.
@earsneyes1 the quad turbo marine 34012's make from 1300 - 1600 hp and have 4000 to 5500 ft lbs of torque according to the tech I spoke with from Kelley tractor in Miami Florida. A fisherman I know from Marathon Fl has a 43' Torres with a 34012 rated at 1200 hp. His boat is the same hull as mine but he uses a V12 cat I use an 840 hp 12v71TI. The hp on the cat is a lot higher but his boat only runs 1 mph faster than mine and burns about 15 gph more. Cats are over rated in my opinion.
@MasterWitchDoctor I agree Cats are overrated, because a Cummins or a Detroit, properly built can run as hard if not harder and use less fuel, as you have pointed out. I just got tired of the Yellow Paint tax that you have to pay every time that Kitty needs something; why pay an extra 10-30 percent just because it has Cat on the valvecover?
@earsneyes1 That seems to be the thing about Caterpillar, once it breaks down (and it will) they got you by the short n curly's. Mack seems to be the one that doesn't break down so much and the commercial boats I see that use them never break. They're not speed boats compared to mine but when my rack gets out of sequence it slows down a lot. If I owned a semi it would probably be a Mack for that reason alone.
@MasterWitchDoctor To me, the Series 60 Detroit is probably the best engine built, period. Simple, strong as dirt, reliable electronics and the ability to go 1.3 million or better before a major overhaul; right next to that engine, the Cummins N14 and its variations. I'll take that engine before an ISX. The Mack engines, at least the pre-EGR ones, are virtually bomb proof if you take care of them, they were meant to be beaten all day without complaint, just bad on fuel.
@earsneyes1 Other engines like the Mercedes MBE4000 and the Volvo VED series get the job done, sip fuel but hard on the pocket when things break ( no aftermarket support ). If I were to do a Cat again, it would be a single turbo C15/3406E with some modifications that would stop the common problems, like making sure the block and head are square. Once that's done, they live forever.
@earsneyes1 oke that will explain a lot about the 3406 marine units I see dropping valves. Caterpillar used to be known for quality (back in the 60's and 70's) but I guess times have changed. My boat is 43 feet by 14 feet at the quarter cleat. It weighs 14 tons, for it to jump up and run 25 knots with 40,000 lbs on my deck is like a semi running 100 mph with a same weight load. I am sure there are trucks that can do it because I had a W900 pass me when I was on my way to Tennessee a few yearsago
@earsneyes1 u are so right.. the cats where always rough on fuel.. pull great though.. isx = pos.. volvo= pos. navistar=pos. detroit has it figured out.. great motor.. i love the cat c15 though.. smooth, strong, 6.5-7.0 miles per gallon.. i will take the cat anyday.
@whb1965 isx, pos? no sorry. pulled trains with both. not as big a load as this guy here tho. cat is smooth, operator friendly. cummins are snappy and a lotta guys have trouble with them. just baby them, and they will out pull your kitty any day
I noticed the big steer tires to hold up the weight of this monster v12, i can imagine these things are very heavy. I know a 3408 is a pretty heavy motor, with 4 cylinders added i'm sure the weight is unheard of.
There is also no jake brakes for the Both 3408 models. If you get an exhaust brake and a brake saver they work pretty good, of course no noise is made except for the exhaust brake, but it's nothing compared to the jake brakes.
@resqjason2 a "jake" is an engine compression brake that alters the timing of the exhaust valve when it is engaged turning the engine into a massive air compressor. an exhaust brake is a butterfly valve that literally blocks the flow of the exhaust creating backpressure. the cat Brakesaver is a hydraulic retarder the bolts right onto the back of the motor
@cameron947 Clessie Lyle Cummins invented the engine brake. Cummins did not produce the brake though in the beginning and Clessie pitched the idea to the Jacobs Manufacturing company who produced it for a vast application of different diesels
@oldbuckshot i was at a truck show one time where there was a really old lowboy trailer with a hand operated brake for someone to control by riding on the trailer and the guy told me that the trailer had the original Jake brake because a guy named jake would work the lever :p
@liitleal I thought the 3412 utilized an SAE #1 bell housing, or at least a 2.5...apparently not, if your
running an 18 spd...unless it's mated through an adapter plate ?? Yes ? No ? Running a cooler &
pump with extra trans. oil capacity ?? Very Nice !! Was that an "in house " conversion ?? Was the cab moved back and the hood extended back to the cowling ? Seems that would be the logical move. Pump & coolers for the rears to handle the increased torque & hp ?? What HP is it rated 4 ?
Now that is some truck Al. I hope you're going to get some vids up of the 3412 and in the cab driving it.
Is that a tri-drive? Couldn't quite make it out. Looked like maybe the 1st axle of the tri was a lift axle. You'd want strong diffs to handle all that power, I'm guessing 700 HP
I've been told they can be anywhere from 800-1500 horsepower. I'd like to know how his 18 speed is holding up. The biggest they make can handle around 2,000 ft-lbs of torque and i know for a fact this has WAY more then 2,000 ft-lbs of torque.

@kdc43 there are intelligent conservatives. I bet you can't name a conservative. name a few for me.

MasterWitchDoctor 1 month ago 14
@MasterWitchDoctor a lot of people are protesting that...

@MasterWitchDoctor Actually cancer rates in high traffic diesel environments are extremely high due to diesels carcinogenic properties.
madjimms 5 days ago
@madjimms ROFL @ YOU!!! You want to talk cancer rates? Look up the carcinegins like SV40 in vaccines, or the GMO BT corn. You wonder why cancer is off the chart, there are the 2 biggest culprits which numerous University studies (University of Calgary, University oh Helsinki, Johns Hopkins) have proven. LOL at anyone who believe carbon dioxide causes cancer. You sure are a moron.
MasterWitchDoctor 3 days ago
@kdc43 doesn't the radioactive iodone 131 or cesium 133 from Fukushima worry you? The EPA's solution was to raise the acceptable limits to not over 100,000 times what they were because the radioactive fall out is being recorded not only all over North America but in Europe and Asia. Deny this look it up and see how many new cases of thyroid cancer have been reported in Wa, Or, and the Republic of Kalifornication. Beside the world is in a CO2 deficient state compared to the Precambrian era

how many mpg do you get? lol
dannyW900 2 years ago
@dannyW900
My old W900 with half the engine this things got (3406B) only got 4.8 to 5.5 with a load, so considering double the cylinders and all the smoke, maybe 3 mpg on a good day. Good thing he has the work to support a settup like that. The fuel bills must be ridiculous.
earsneyes1 1 year ago
@earsneyes1
I'm sure the freight he hauls pays over 1 dollar per mile. Should cover the cost of the fuel and chrome lug nut covers.
24preacherboy 1 year ago
That's for sure.
Only got in the 2's mpg wise, but fuel was so cheap it didn't matter.
earsneyes1 1 year ago
@earsneyes1 as far as truck engines are concerned a 600 hp 3406E on a Stuska dyno was hard pressed to hit 500hp. A simular truck with a Signature 600hp cummins was around 620. They burn less and brake down a lot less than the Cat's do. Look under the hood of most every truck broke down on the highway you will see a Cat.Seems like every Cat I see in commercial fishing drop valves. They're living on their laurels, the series 60 Detroit made them obsolete.
MasterWitchDoctor 1 year ago
@earsneyes1 As far as sound goes, nothing like the sound of a 12v71TI at 2400 rpm. I hear it everyday in my boat with open water cooled exhaust. These 12v71TI's may not be marvels of technology but neither are these cat 34012's. Carlos engine burns 45 gph and only runs 31 knots. Thats 35 mph and less than 1 mpg. My 12v71TI burns 30 gph and runs 30 knots (34 mph) which is a lot more economical and rebuild only cost me 15 grand not 50.
MasterWitchDoctor 1 year ago
@earsneyes1
Yea, thats where the KTA Cummins found its way into a truck. It was an engine built for a locomotive but truck dirvers wanted them for their trucks. Eventually Cummins gave in and started helping with the adaptation.
24preacherboy 1 year ago
@24preacherboy actually, it was built for a tugboat, but you are right, one hell of an engine. strong and reliable..
whb1965 1 year ago
MasterWitchDoctor 1 year ago
@MasterWitchDoctor I agree Cats are overrated, because a Cummins or a Detroit, properly built can run as hard if not harder and use less fuel, as you have pointed out. I just got tired of the Yellow Paint tax that you have to pay every time that Kitty needs something; why pay an extra 10-30 percent just because it has Cat on the valvecover?
earsneyes1 1 year ago
@earsneyes1 That seems to be the thing about Caterpillar, once it breaks down (and it will) they got you by the short n curly's. Mack seems to be the one that doesn't break down so much and the commercial boats I see that use them never break. They're not speed boats compared to mine but when my rack gets out of sequence it slows down a lot. If I owned a semi it would probably be a Mack for that reason alone.
MasterWitchDoctor 1 year ago
@MasterWitchDoctor To me, the Series 60 Detroit is probably the best engine built, period. Simple, strong as dirt, reliable electronics and the ability to go 1.3 million or better before a major overhaul; right next to that engine, the Cummins N14 and its variations. I'll take that engine before an ISX. The Mack engines, at least the pre-EGR ones, are virtually bomb proof if you take care of them, they were meant to be beaten all day without complaint, just bad on fuel.
earsneyes1 1 year ago
@earsneyes1 Other engines like the Mercedes MBE4000 and the Volvo VED series get the job done, sip fuel but hard on the pocket when things break ( no aftermarket support ). If I were to do a Cat again, it would be a single turbo C15/3406E with some modifications that would stop the common problems, like making sure the block and head are square. Once that's done, they live forever.
earsneyes1 1 year ago
@earsneyes1 oke that will explain a lot about the 3406 marine units I see dropping valves. Caterpillar used to be known for quality (back in the 60's and 70's) but I guess times have changed. My boat is 43 feet by 14 feet at the quarter cleat. It weighs 14 tons, for it to jump up and run 25 knots with 40,000 lbs on my deck is like a semi running 100 mph with a same weight load. I am sure there are trucks that can do it because I had a W900 pass me when I was on my way to Tennessee a few yearsago
MasterWitchDoctor 1 year ago
@earsneyes1 u are so right.. the cats where always rough on fuel.. pull great though.. isx = pos.. volvo= pos. navistar=pos. detroit has it figured out.. great motor.. i love the cat c15 though.. smooth, strong, 6.5-7.0 miles per gallon.. i will take the cat anyday.
whb1965 1 year ago
@whb1965 isx, pos? no sorry. pulled trains with both. not as big a load as this guy here tho. cat is smooth, operator friendly. cummins are snappy and a lotta guys have trouble with them. just baby them, and they will out pull your kitty any day

I noticed the big steer tires to hold up the weight of this monster v12, i can imagine these things are very heavy. I know a 3408 is a pretty heavy motor, with 4 cylinders added i'm sure the weight is unheard of.

omg 1000+ hp is a big helper
(and the torque of course)
MegaZsolti 2 years ago
dont you mean engine brakes not exhaust brakes
DAF460 2 years ago
No,if I said exhaust brakes I meant exhuast brakes.
liitleal 2 years ago 11
ok but why use them when an engine brake has better braking
DAF460 2 years ago
There is no Jacobs brakes for the 3412,the exhaust brakes with a hyrdralic engine retarder(brake saver) work well
liitleal 2 years ago 10
oh cool
DAF460 2 years ago
That's what I had wondered Al, using Blue Ox over Brakesavers...but I want to use the 770D Guillotines,
more positive back pressure for braking...less bypass.
SteelKahuna 2 years ago
@liitleal what exactly is a breaksaver?
2strokedetroit 1 year ago
@liitleal and the fact that a hydraulic retarder has 3 times the braking hp as a jake really has nothing to do with it lmao
TBWdracula2003 7 months ago
There is also no jake brakes for the Both 3408 models. If you get an exhaust brake and a brake saver they work pretty good, of course no noise is made except for the exhaust brake, but it's nothing compared to the jake brakes.

@chadro85 a "jake brake" is an exhaust brake. "jake" is a brand name
resqjason2 7 months ago
@resqjason2 a "jake" is an engine compression brake that alters the timing of the exhaust valve when it is engaged turning the engine into a massive air compressor. an exhaust brake is a butterfly valve that literally blocks the flow of the exhaust creating backpressure. the cat Brakesaver is a hydraulic retarder the bolts right onto the back of the motor
MattytheDem 6 months ago
@resqjason2 If im not mistaken 'jake" stands for the brand Jacobs. THe guy who invented Jacobs exhaust brakes.
cameron947 3 months ago
@cameron947 Clessie Lyle Cummins invented the engine brake. Cummins did not produce the brake though in the beginning and Clessie pitched the idea to the Jacobs Manufacturing company who produced it for a vast application of different diesels
oldbuckshot 2 months ago
@oldbuckshot i was at a truck show one time where there was a really old lowboy trailer with a hand operated brake for someone to control by riding on the trailer and the guy told me that the trailer had the original Jake brake because a guy named jake would work the lever :p

Man that sound great! Did they have to strech the hood, because a 3406 and 3408 are already huge engines, so I know a 3412 has to take up some space.

ipdaily6 2 years ago

You'd want strong diffs to handle all that power, I'm guessing 700 HP
gm16v149 2 years ago
I've been told they can be anywhere from 800-1500 horsepower. I'd like to know how his 18 speed is holding up. The biggest they make can handle around 2,000 ft-lbs of torque and i know for a fact this has WAY more then 2,000 ft-lbs of torque.
