These things happen because power got to the heads of the leadership, the the perspectives of the Europeans were much different then than now. They believed themselves to be justified, because of their civilization, military, politics and culture. Which, due to being able to expand as an empire, led them to see themselves as the apex of the human race; thus believing that all other cultures should follow the same path. God has no place in this, it is a complete human endeavor.

Because of my previous post, the Euorpeans believed in God, Glory and Gold (look up that phrase sometime). The Europeans wanted wanted cheap labour as a result of the Industrial revolution; thus their expeditions were sent out for slave labour. Plantations served to fuel the industrial beast; this combined with their 'apex culture-esq' attitude led to the oppression and abuse of the African people. The Europeans wanted something and this was the best way to achieve it.

@sitabanu Axum, Abyssinia, or Ethiopia as it's contemporarily known in the West had been a kingdom for thousands of years prior to European colonialism. Ethiopia and Italy's relationship started out commercially. The Italians sold arms to the Ethiopians before trying to trick them into becoming a colony. Ethiopia resisted and won.

The Italians came back after WWI and conquered Ethiopia with their more advanced post-war weaponry and chemical weapons. They were freed by England during WWII

The colonies may have asked for the impearialists to leave, but that doesn't mean the people knew what they were getting into. And the Europeans should have pulled out, but after they built a stable republic. So even if the people asked the Europeans to leave it doesn't mean that they should have pulled out so quickly and without nation building. By deciding to colonize and then decolonize, a country should take the responsiblity to build a republic for the colony whether they want it or not.

didn't Britain have to spend all their money on defending and bringing england out of rationing and chaos after ww2, which is when most of GB's colonies withdrew. Potentially like having history repeat itself when the roman empire withdrew after 450 occupancy in britania. Well, they might not have had the ability to push such a move. However they did have the ability to keep the colonies until they could. It is unclear to me whether the rest could or could not, but I am fairly certain that Britain could have kept their colonies until a future date. Of course another problem is how artificial the boundaries of the African countries are. Thank you very much for the discussion, I really enjoy it.

yeah, europe didn't take much consideration into the tribes in africa, who had been fighting for centuries before the scramble, when they developed contemporary boundries for todays african countries. I am taking a pol/history and sociology degree in september. so this chatting helps
