It means he's a hologram. In Red Dwarf, if someone on the ship died, they could be brought back as a light-based hologram, first Soft Light, not being able to touch things but can go through them, then Hard Light, the better opposite. There could only be one at a time on the ship, though. Basically, the guy shown had died with everyone else except the other guy on the ship, and was brought back to keep him sane, though why him is a complete mystery as they both hate each other's guts. :P

@Wolvinof Holly brought Rimmer back for two reasons.

Reason 1 explained ti Lister in the first episode: Out of all the people on board the ship Rimmer is the person he spoke the most words to.

Reason 2 explained after Rimmer leaves: The best way for Rimmer to keep Lister sane was to be unbareble to live with, it meant Lister always had something to do. Annoy Rimmer just enough to bare his company.

Badly explained (by me) but thats why RImmer was brought back.

@Wolvinof It's not really an official reason. It's just something Kochanski says in 'Blue'. "Maybe he sacrificed his happiness to keep you sane... You had to hate him, it was what kept you going."

This is after Lister begins to miss Rimmer and feels slightly bad about treating him badly when he was just there to keep Lister sane.
