  • I watched this after reading Animal Farm and it was very helpful in understanding the parallels between the French Revolution and Animal Farm.

  • All of this is on Versailles. Bbc2 I player. They were showing this form louise xiv to xvi. But it's only there for about a week.

  • I'm french, and I think (even thought I'm supposed to have learned all this) I'm just learning the history of my country thanks to someone who is american. And yes, even thought I don't really talk english, it's much more clear in my head. Thank you, John! :)

  • "Like alot of monarchs, Leopold II liked the idea of monarchies and wanted to keep his job as a person who gets to stand around wearing a dress, pointing at nothing, owning winged lion monkeys made of gold" xD

  • I love it when he says "standing around wearing a dress, pointing at nothing, owning winged lion monkeys made of gold" and you can just tell he's trying not to laugh.

A used-to-be-country that became part of germany during ww 2.

If you want to know more, watch some "hetalia axis powers" on netflix

  • @24nerdfighter Well, it's more like it became Germany. It was Prussia who conquered/united the rest of Germany and declared the German Empire in 1871. Really Germany was just an extended Prussia until the Weimar Republic.

  • @24nerdfighter

    Wooooooohooooooo

    HETALIA FTW!!!

  • @WhatItsAllAbout24 Germany

  • So glad I remembered this, it's so interesting now that I've learned about it in school!

  • so by august of 1972, france is still poor, people are still hungry BUT now they are fighting two wars! *smiley face*

    loool xD

  • Why do US Americans so often say they speak American? That is not a language and disriminates South America. -.-

  • @Scorpsed Because 99% of the time US Americans say they speak American, they're joking, or making fun of other US Americans.

  • @Scorpsed who cares about south america

  • I got my teacher to show this is class, nobody recognized nerdfighters

  • This whole 98 percent of the French people protesting thing and being policed against sounds a little like Occupy Wallstreet...

  • Headless monarchy? I'll drink to that!

  • JOHN Y U NO HISTORY TEACHER?!

  • every time John says Jacobins, I cringe

  • I now realise...every day in John's book is Friday...and every month is July.

  • It wasn't a very cunning get away considering that, despite their servant disguise, they left in an elaborate carriage so overloaded with unnecessarily possessions that it slowed them down and drawing attention to the king who was recognized by citizens as being the man featured on their coins.

  • Prussia? Austria? The Netherlands??

    Hm. Tell me more, John.

  • @TheGundy With all due respect, how is the USA hungry?

  • @TheGundy The wealth disparity in the U.S. is the largest it's been since. With the astronomically wealthy folk who live like kings the way they did before personal income taxes were assessed. Time for a new revolution!

  • @TheGundy lol it happening now in america

  • "now let me introduce to my friend the.....guillotine!! " i seriously fell off my chair laughing!!

AMAZING JOB OF MAKING THIS SOO DAMN INTERESTING!!

  • I think I'm going to do well on my test tomorrow now!!! :) Thanks!

  • Can we have another teaching week thing soon?

  • Professional taster of pizzas :D

  • i hope there are more punishments in the future that help me with my exams.

  • @Clawacio Actually, the French would probably say "lancez ton derrieres" if they said anything, though I am not an expert by any means.

  • @kikiann11 Very very true!

  • Golden Rule: Don't get in a war with Great Britain, Spain and Germany. They shall.. as they say in france 'kick vous pantaloon'.

  • @JenniAnime I WAS ABOUT TO COMMENT THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHen he said HRE my first thought: Germany!

  • love you to pieces, but you shouldn't be proud that americans can't pronounce foreign words...

  • @JenniAnime ME :D

  • "We don't want to hurt condemned criminals...we just want to *kill* them" XD

  • It's "Twelfth Night or as you like it"

  • Injured Soldier: Your majesty, the people are gathering outside.

King Louis XVI: Is it another riot?

Injured Soldier: No majesty..... IT'S A REVOLUTION!!

  • @samreganedwards Touché.

  • @samreganedwards Perhaps you are a terrible student for not remembering.

  • Thank you John Green I now understand my friends :)

  • Austria? Let's do it.

  • @CrashCommunityHQ

My history teacher from kindergarten through sixth grade was a lady; and my civics teacher this year, seventh grade, was a girl. Oh, and, I must be an expection to that no girls thing, because history is my best subject.

  • @CrashCommunityHQ

My history teacher from kindergarten through sixth grade was a lady; and my civics teacher this year, seventh grade, was a girl.

  • awesome vid .. awesome guy

  • I have my social studies final tomorrow. This is how I'm studying.

  • Okay I guess im done studying for Regents exams

  • the map you used at 3:08 was already in 1789 a few hunderd years outdated

  • 1790 had one more important thing - the Civil Constitution of the Clergy and the resulting Clerical Oath. Which is pretty much just the National Assembly saying "You have to denounce the Pope and pledge your loyalty to the Revolution instead of your religion," which didn't go down very well with all the priests.

And that's the reason why Louis fled, because he was really quite religious and he felt like he was betraying God and whatnot by taking the Oath.

  • thank you for helping me study for my history final!

  • @CrashCommunityHQ my history teacher in 4th grade was a woman

  • According to my brother the USSR and England played large part in the French Revolution....

  • what happened to the civil constitution of the clergy? it's one of the main reasons the king and royal family wanted to leave frane.

  • this is the only way i can pass tomoro:)THANK YOU!

  • John's ideas of the best jobs in the world = the complete truth

  • All History teachers are men no girls sorry ladies. See history is like this secret club when you set up when you were a kid and you had a sign that said no girls allowed!

  • @CrashCommunityHQ My World Studies History teacher is a woman. So shut the fuck up, retard.

  • @CrashCommunityHQ my history teacher is a woman, stfu!!!!!

  • @wntw319 LOOOK AT ALL THE FUCKS IM NOT GIVING!!!! HAHAHAHA GROW UP!

  • @CrashCommunityHQ AH, that totally makes sense, with me being a history major and, you know, female. Decepticon alert.

  • Best way to study for AP World.

  • AP World...TOO MUCH INFORMATION TO REMEMBER!!!! AUGHHH!

  • here's to hoping the ap euro frq is over the french revolution!

  • I'm reviewing for AP Euro :) And it's FUN

  • @musicalbows23 Me too!!! Good luck on your test!

  • thank you for helping with my speech ! ahaha.

  • Awesome...

  • If I don't fail my history test it's because of you! Loveit.

  • ohhh maybe I won't fail my AP Euro exam after all...

  • @amandaccoyne lol there was a severe lack of questions on things i learned on that test.

  • Everything is much more fun when you teach it.

  • Best. Jobs. In. Ze. World. YESH!

  • So I am a sophomore in college and I have a test tomorrow on the French Revolution. Half way through reviewing my notes I remember these videos. Test I shall pwn you tomorrow!

  • 21 people should be likened to bloodthirsty despots

  • @DCFunBud They left with royal family and high ranking nobility... they would have had servents. It did leave Paris and made it to Varennes. Leopold II was the brother of Marie Antoinette as also was Joesph II.

  • I am using your video to revew for my unit Exam on the Revolution.

  • I'm American, and we pronounce everything in American!

  • Frantz, u so sillee, y u no make happee timez?

    Also, 2:34-2:42 for the win.

  • This is bad and inaccurate history. Louis XIV and Marie Antoinette did not leave Paris with their servants. The carriage was so grand that it immediately drew attention to itself. Leopold II, the Holy Roman Emperor was Marie Antoinette's nephew, not brother. Her brother was Joseph II.

  • In this video and part 1, you T O T A L L Y gotch 'ur nerd one. I LOVE IT.

  • I never understood a thing in class about the french revolution and the test is tomorrow

I am passing the test because of John Green

    NERDFIGHTERS! :D

  • we just watched these video in my class.

we now want you as our teacher.

  • screw notes. I'm using these videos to study for my test tomorrow.

  • this is definitely going to help me study for the world history AP test haha

  • What do you mean by "Clicking thumbs up makes new nerdfighters" at 1:03?

  • "Only I'm pronouncing it wrong because I'm American and we pronounce everything in American..."

And we also refer to the version of the English language we use more commonly as "American."

  • Next time I'm suprised I'm going to shout "HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE!"

  • Need to make history teachers aware of these videos immediately!

  • AP euro student right here :) loved this video. Mr. Fantabulous Man keep showing yo skills :)

  • soo, i'm watching these french revolution videos in a row, & i was like, "WOAH, HE GREW A BEARD REALLY FAST !" :P

the vlogbrothers should do more educational videos, HINT HINT. =]

    dftba (:

  • I dont know why but you reminds of Matthew Bomer

  • I think a puppy sized elephant breeder would be number 1

  • There are 2 fun facts about why the guillotine isn't a humane form of capital punishment.

-After a head is severed it stays conscious for 15 to 20 seconds.

-And guillotines don't chop heads off, they crush them off.

    (If I'm wrong, I'm sorry)

  • @lyssaless

You're pretty much right, but "humane" here is a relative term. Before the Guillotine was around the main methods for capital punishment were hanging and decapitation, by sword or axe. The problem with decapitation, is that depending on the force of the executioner's swing, it could take a couple of whacks to get the job done. Hanging was also a fairly imprecise art form, if the rope was too long the prisoner's head could come clean off, if too short they slowly suffocated.

  • @Shika235 You're right about all of that, and I knew that already. I wrote that comment a million time trying to avoid someone misinterpreting why I wrote it and going over the character limit. I wrote it for the whole "fun-fact-I-can-go-tell-my-siblings-to-scare-them" deal, or whatever. I'm sorry if this is coming off wrong.

  • Do you know how their escape was discovered?

A farmer identified them by looking at one of the french coins which had louis XVI face on it.

    oh the irony

  • I'm going to have to learn this next year in history, and I'm gonna already know it all. John, you're my hero.

  • um florean fortescue was the owner of a magical ice cream store, and things didnt turn out to well for him.

  • @lovebug26m THIS COMMENT IS BRILLIANT.

  • omg, reeeealy sorry, accidentally 'thumbs downed' your comment :(

if you ever count your 'thumbs up', add an extra one :)

  • @steampunkfangirl ehm.. sorry, i just had to try out if i can remove a thumbs down. i can´t. :( :D

  • neither Holy, nor Roman, nor and Empire... :)

  • "we don't want to hurt condemned criminals, we just wanna kill them."

does this sound like Umbridge to anyone else?

  • YESSSSSS I have a test on this tomorrow, THIS COUNTS AS STUDYING! (I can only hope that curiously cute cat videos dont distract me

    thank you John Green

  • Is anyone else completely thinking "Hetalia: Axis Powers" through most of these videos? I hope not...

  • @cheese0134 Sorry, I am too. ^.^

  • The men ain't got nothin to noms! WOMEN MUST MARCH FOR SANDWICH MATERIAL!

  • Why is it that these videos are so much more in depth than my history classes? I never knew this much about the French Revolution, and we spent a lot more than 6 minutes on it in school...

  • I love these videos so much. It is why the way you explain fascinating things like the French Revolution makes me glad that I am a History Major.

    Best Wishes and DFTBA,

    Claire

  • didnt hank make any french rev videos? because i cant find them.. =/

  • @DaSassyDanca he did not he made some videos on some other facts, as it was John who was going to shine on the french rev

  • Best Jobs In The World: - Owner of Magical Ice Cream Store - Captain of the Starship Enterprise <---WTB that Job - Professional Taster of Pizzas - French Nobility

  • I would like to inform you, John, that I have been assigned a project on the French Revolution. This was the first thing I thought of. :D

  • I am feclempt talk amongst yourselves the topic is the holy roman empire, it was neither holy nor roman discuss

  • @strickerman101 why did they even name it that way.. googled it in wiki.. but a lot of words came up. none of which i had the patience to fully grasp.. much less assimilate the information they were supposed to deliver.. SO i still didnt get it. Why holy.. why roman.. why empire?

  • @DaSassyDanca Based from the things I studied during the last quarter, the only things that make them the so-called "Holy Roman Empire" is their desire to bring back the Roman way of life... and that was supposed to be during the start of the Renaissance or maybe the end of the Middle Ages.

  • To you king Lewy we say foowy
