Hey I had my surround sound connected to my ps3 and satellite but now since I did update it asked me if I wanted to use the HDMI cable I got so I did but now my ps3 doesn't have the surround sound connected? Can I have my HDMI cable and Surround sound connected to my ps3 at the same time? What am I doing wrong if you know how to resolve this please leave a comment! I would appreciate it a lot
XMB>Settings>Sound Settings>Audio Multi Output, and then turn it on. it will come out in all audio output that you have connected to the ps3. no need watch this video now...
Definitely something I'll be using if I get a PS3.It will make setup much easier for me.Not saying I won't get a PS3.In fact,I plan on saving up for one.I mostly play games. However, every now and then,I get tired of gaming, often because a game is frustrating or just annoying me,and I need to take a break. In those cases,I like to sit down and watch a good movie.
@playstation406 if you connect a HDMI cable from your PS3 to your sound system and then connect a second HDMI cable from the sound system to the tv will it be better than optical?
@VacilonDeSpringfield yes that is the best way to connect your ps3 to your sound system because hdmi gives you hd audio and supports up to 7.1 channels optical only supports 5.1 channels and thats how i have my ps3 connected to my receiver
@playstation406 Wait, please help. My headset (Turtle Beach X41s) runs 7.1, but I don't know how to get the 7.1 out of it. I have and hooked up the HDMI, but don't know how to get the 7.1. Do you know?
@YoshiFan100 Hey I am not an expert but I will try my best to help so you want to output 7.1 sound form your 7.1 headset did you select the appropriate audio formats in the hdmi sound settings supported by your headset. Sorry I took so long to reply if you need any more help feel free to ask?
Ok, the headset can run off Optical and line-in (I think that's what it's called). I think what I need to know, is the line-in, or what ever it was called. How do I hook it up that way?
iv got the latest tv out plasma 60", which is set to multi audio and the stereo works fine but the hdmi sound lags about one second to the image displayed FUK!
so if for example i was on a gaming monitor with hdmi, plugged in with my ps3, but it had no sound. if i had a for example 2.1 surround sound plugged directly into the ps3, would it work? thanks...
@MrAruban if your hdmi is connected to the tv set hdmi to linear pcm if its connected to a receiver also set it to linear pcm and set the receiver to afd std or if you are using an optical audio cable set it to bitstream and also set the receiver or amplifier to afd std
ficking bullshit the sound just dissappears sometimes while im playing bfbc2 and its so annoying cuz teh sound is pretty much freaking important there lol.. dumas sht hdmi problem -.-
There is now an option under Sound Settings - Audio Multi-Output. Switch this to On and you can then run sound through 2 auido outputs. In my case, the HDMI & Optical Output.
PearlDrums1234...I connect to my Sony Hifi via an Optical cable. The optical out on the PS3 is located next to Ethernet port.
i use headphones for games like mw2 on my optical, and i have regular speakers too that i use if there is ore then just me here or i just dont want to use my headphones. its just convenient
@realizment: I have 2 zones of audio outs on my receiver. Zone 2 uses analog input only. So when I want to listen to Pandora through zone 2 I need the PS3's analog out.
what do I do if my ps3 is hooked to my tv with an hdmi cable but the speakers I want to use on my home stereo only have the red white and yellow attachments? help me out bro
Confirmed that the PS3 has a multiple audio output option now. I didn't notice the option prior to performing the update, but I know for a fact that after performing the firmware update today there is an option under audio settings to select multiple audio out and I was able to hear audio via all 3 outputs simultaneously.
I'm not sure what effects this has on the audio quality of the HDMI or optical outputs.
Optical digital cables are the very best cables for premier sound. That said, coaxial digital cables and HDMI cables will sound pretty much the same most of the time, and are much cheaper / practical.
I wanna hook my ps3 with my home theather. It has the optical audio entrance but , there is no optical option on the dvd only av1 , av2, dvd and turner. can I still use it? and how
just change the settings on your ps3 to optical 5.1 and the dts one. and when ur playing turn down the volume on your tv and bump ur home theater thats what i do
actually, HDMI is a newwer technology that is better than optical. HDMI supports new audio methods and uncompressed 7.1. Optical is an older technology that doesn't support the new features.
Companies just want to sell you the opticals to make the money.
Hey people...sorry...I forgot about this video. I think since it's been quite a while, and there has been many firmware updates, I don't think this technique works anymore!
If anybody tries it & it still works, would be great to hear people are still finding this useful & are not getting frustrated because it no longer works with the latest firmware release!
the optical to get best results. is to have it go from your ps3 to you receiver. and have your hdmi do strictly video. no need to run optical to tv because hdmi has that covered. having hdmi and optical both running from ps3 to tv is absolutely pointless. thats probably the problem.
oh i think you confused what i said. get optical because the ps3 has an optical out in the back and connect that to the reciever. then have your hdmi cable go from your ps3 to your tv. in the back of the ps3 there is a port for hdmi and a port for optical use them both. then go to settings in ps3 and having the audio go out the optical cable and leave the hdmi for the video. then just tun on your receiver and put it on the correct output and your good to go
I hav emy ps3 connected like this, but the OPTICAL sound wont work with crash commando and super stardust HD... anybody else have this problem or know why I am?
Does the optical slip out easily on your ps3??? Mine won stay its a bitch... I am just wondering if i fucked up my ps3's optical connector or if they all suck ass like that... it fits just fine in my receiever
just a question here. i have an optical cable. i can connect it to my ps3 to my laptop. will i be able to record anything thats happening on my ps3 on my laptop? if not, wat will i be able to do with the laptop while its connected to my ps3?
I don't think you can get it to work this way anymore, due to recent firmware updates. Not sure how to do it now...I'll have to try and fiddle around again & see if I can figure it out!
I have my TV hooked to a stereo receiver because the left audio on the TV is dead (in the TV, not just the speaker). I just bought a PS3. Will I able to hook the HDMI cable into the TV and the optical cable into the receiver - or is this what you're saying no longer works?
You don't in fact need to turn the tv off at all, and the above problem is removed by just changing the input to your tv as you turn on the ps3. It needs to be changed from (e.g) ext 1 (say sky) to (e.g.) hdmi 1, where you have ps3 connected to your tv by hdmi 1.

Hi. I first discovered this accidently when I fist got an optical cable, but hadn't been able to replicate it until reading this - thank you.
To add some insight...
It doesn't matter if you switch the tv off first - but the tv must be set so it first picks up the ps3 (picture) hdmi input when you turn it on. I.e. if your Sky automatically comes on when you turn on the tv it won't work as described above.
@andydunn31 what kind of cables are you using for the opticial digital cable and can you tell me what are the deffrenes betwwen NXG Technology 1 meter Ruby Series Premium Optical Digital Toslink™ Cable or Philips 12 ft. Fiber Optic Audio Cable what are the deffernces between the two cables i need to buy one of these two for my ps3 to connect them from my ps3 to my home theater i already have a hdmi but i need a digital audi cable plz tell me as fast you can
Does anyone know where i can get optical speakers for ps3 or an optical to 3.5mm jack converter. I have a HD monitor but no HDMI socket so if i run it throguh DVI i get no sound :( .
No. My HDTV is linked to the playstation via the HDMI cable. The Optical cable links my Sony HiFi to the PS3. The Optical cable is usually used to link to a surround sound system.
Finally someone figured this out, it really bothers me b/c my xbox 360 elite supports both by default. It's really important to me because I have roommates and live in an apt I can't really use my HT system at night. Manually switching everytime is a pain. Thanks Andy!
1. Make sure the Audio is set up to go through your Optical device.
2. Turn off the playstation, making sure the TV is switched off just before the playstation turns off.
3. Switch the playstation back on.
4. Wait a second or two before turning the TV back on...timing is crucial. Too soon or too late, it won't work. I wait till just after the playstation makes a tiny beeb noise.
That's it. It should work. Don't be put off if it doesn't work straight away. Like I said, you have to turn the tv on at the right moment. So, if it doesn't work straight away, just keep at it.
The Optical device doesn't need to be turned off or on, that has no effect. Just as long as the PS3's audio is set up to output through Optical device. I turn my PS3 off when i'm on the XMB, but it doesn't matter if you do it while a game or DVD is running.

As far as sound quality, Optical does not support Dolby TrueHD or DTS Master Audio like HDMI. Dolby TrueHD sounds so much better than Dolby Digital.
