Thanks for posting, very exciting comeback victory. I remember reading about this game in Friday Night Lights. The only other video I have seen of Boobie was on the DVD extras in the movie, and Gary Gaines' show after the season ending loss the next week. The movie itself I found rather disappointing. It would be cool if somebody produced a documentary following Friday Night Lights, not just the football team, but all the other issues discussed in Odessa at that time.
@luxy009 he planted his foot trying to stiff arm a tackler, and his foot was caught in the artificial turf, and another player fell on his knee from the side.
@Rockets010101 they portrayed him better to make it a better story.but it is true he was being offered scholarships from the best colleges before he got injured
@reinerjs Kinda sorta. This year Permian went to the semi-finals. Which by Permian's standards in the 80s was a decent year, but a great one. They had HUGE expectations with Miles, Winchell, Hill, and others returning.
@reinerjs Yes but they never went to the finals in real life they went to the semi finals and lost with a last second incomplete pass. The movie just spiced it up a bit.
If yardage would have been tied they were going to flip a coin. AHS is my Alma Mater. I have never cried at a football game before that or since that, but many of us cried that night.
@whayes8084 - This wasn't posted to make Boobie "look good". It was just about all of the footage out there that actually showed the real Boobie. Since he was injured before the '88 season even began, there is VERY little footage of him during his senior year. Folks had been asking the poster for footage of Boobie for awhile, and this was just about it.
@whayes8084 This wasn't a Boobie Miles highlight. It was a highlight video of the 1987 Arlington vs Odessa Permian game, one of the best in Texas High School history. BUT, it DOES have footage of Boobie Miles which many people wanted to see. Show me any other footage of the real Boobie Miles. ANYTHING. Yeah, I didn't think you could...
Awesome high school football game! The sheer will and determination of Permian won that game. Arlington simply did not have as much heart as Mojo on that night.
Check out "Clear Eyes-Full Heart-Can't Lose" recorded to 300 Violin Orchestra. It's Friday Night Lights meets 300 Violin Orchestra. A great pump up song! YouTube search tkpowell21
Man illinois football is definitely not like texas football i wish i couldve played highschool ball in texas just to experience what its like the crouds in texas are like twice as big and it seems more exciting than pro football
Heard Stan Wilkins mentioned, and Brian Chavez was on this team and next year's. With Boobie Miles' situation, it seems like this was the highlight of life for so many people. Too bad you often have another 60 years after high school.
@WISCONSINWOODSHUNTER - Crow was a senior here, Miles a junior. Crow was the feature back in Permian "Wing-T" offense. He rushed for over 2000 yards this season. Now, was he "better"? Who knows... but he was one hell of a fighter and never went down on the first hit.
Seems a little unlike football to finish in a tie and have it determined by first downs, penetrations, etc. Just go into OT and the team with the higher score wins.
@AdvancedGentleman Overtime rules had not been laid out in 1987 for the NCAA or High School. In fact, it wasn't until 1996 that rules came into effect.
friday night lights was a very inaccurate movie. permian was never the underdog, and their "mojo" made it almost impossible for opposing teams to hear their own plays
@barlen84 Or because it was about the 1988 team, and this game took place in 1987... Maybe, just maybe, it was that. If you're implying that the official is the reason Arlington got beat, the official didn't blow a 28-7 lead for Arlington. And I don't even remember any bad calls...
Shawn Crow was the best running back ever at Permian. The fact that Boobie iseven mentioned in this clip or any mention of this team is PREPOSTEROUS! I was at this game, I was sitting around the 25 yard line. Crow scored on that 2 point conversion that was called no good! That last drive was 10 straight plays of Shawn Crow doing 18 pitch (student body right). Arlington's defense was exhausted!
@cmbishop21 You are out of your mind!Boobie miles had over 1300 yards rushing this season, sean crow had nothing on that!Boobie is the reason permian was predicted to go to state in 88!
@brianbmf In 1987, Shawn Crow had 2288 yards, Miles had 1385. You can debate that Miles was the better physical specimen, but Crow had more heart and more determination to win, not just get a college scholarship. With Boobie it was "All Boobie, all the time." If you lived in Odessa in 1987 and went to all the games like I did and thought that Boobie was better, you might just want to go get checked for a new prescription.
@cmbishop21 boobie miles was keyed on thats why he didnt have as much but he was still a better back,if he wasnt better than crow than it would be crow who had all the top colleges on him but it wasnt it was boobie because boobie was better and him going down is why they didnt win state or even go to state.
@brianbmf - In the Wing-T, Crow was the feature back. AND, Crow DID have colleges looking at him. Crow had a scholarship to TCU, injured his knee, and left to join the Marines. This is speculation, but if you were to ask any old school Permian fan who the best RB in their history was, I would bet my college degree that most would say Shawn Crow.
@brianbmf - Again, it's all speculation. I knew both of these gentlemen and can tell you BOTH were well-represented by colleges calling on them. And saying "they didn't win state because Boobie went down" is pretty clairvoyant... since they went all the way to the semis without him. And remember, Comer was the feature back the next year when we beat Aldine for the title... does that mean Comer was better than Boobie?
What a great game!!...glad I watched it...but who was the narrator? Is high school football actually on the radio in Texas??? It sounded like a Permian announcer, are all their games on radio?...Those tie-break rules are strange! I've never heard of anything like it...Does Texas still used these odd rules to break ties?
@seymour333 - The "narrator" is Kurt Kiser, who announced Permian games for the local CBS affiliate in Odessa. This was NOT a radio broadcast. I'm unsure if the UIL still uses these rules today.
@goten1214 - No, he was the local CBS station's sports guy. The radio broadcasts were usually split between two or three local stations... one would do the OHS game one week, the other the Permian game, and so on. The Midland teams were usually included in that mix as well.
Funny, I saw someone ask "is high school football really on the radio in TX?" and I wanted to reply with "yes, isn't TX high school football on the radio where you live, too?"
But of COURSE it's on the radio! Is it not on the radio elsewhere?! In Texas, it's usually always broadcast on the internet as well now. On a Friday Night when Longview had an off-week, I was travelling, and going through tons of small towns, it was awesome hearing the radio broadcasts of all of the games going on.
Whos #90 in this clip. and this clip is so much different from the movie. Why would they put boobie miles injured in the movie. and permian loses in the movie.
The movie is about the 1988 team, not this 1987 team. Boobie got hurt in a scrimmage before the 1988 season. And Permian lost in the semifinals to Dallas Carter, not in the state championship.
Whats really bad about how this game ended (tie) was in 1995 same 2 teams did this playoff dance again, ended in another tied game, 21/21, with Mojo advancing, again, on some tie-breaker. Thank heavens the UIL body finally decided to put overtime in the games for the deciding factor.
Arlington finally put it to an Odessa HS in 2009 winning 70-42 in a playoff game.
@samhobson30 It is, but it made for some insane strategy. I've seen it come down to total yardage. A team was ahead on total yards but was down by 2 first downs (tied on penetrations) when they got the ball. They got 2 first downs then kneeled out the clock lol.
Wow, this game brings back so many memories, so much emotion. Texas High School football at its' best. I was there for this game, and I remember Shawn Crow being the senior running back that we scouted as their top ground threat. Boobie was a junior this game, and he was a beast. Extremely hard to tackle, but Crow got most of the carries. Even the schools' marching bands taunted each other before the game on the field during warmups. Incredible game. Go Colts! Class of 88
A high school game that isn't even the State Final selling out a 66,000 seat stadium, and being broadcast regionally... nearly unheard of outside of Texas
@marty34156 We've had overtime since 1996, the same year the NCAA implemented it. But in playoff situations, a winner MUST be determined, unlike the NCAA, so we had to come up with creative solutions.
ahhh i see well obviously in playoffs you need a winner, jsut wandered why they didnt go to ot. cuz im from pa where its the same didnt get ot till 96 but prior to that in playoffs they'd go to ot
@goten1214 There was a 1972 playoff game in Louisiana which was tied 0-0. Tied on penetrations. Tied on first downs. The game was replayed four days later. The winning team then got two days rest and had to play the state championship game, which they won.
@DNSKansas Thanks for that bit of info! I know that at one point in Texas, total yards was the tiebreaker after first downs... I know of at least one game with a team needing 2 first downs to win on total yards which they got. Not sure when that was accepted.
@cokewave29 - In the movie, the director had to match up footage with the 2003 Permian team. So, the starting tailback on the '03 team wore #45, Berg decided to make Boobie 45 in the movie. Saved tons of filming.
Thanks for posting, very exciting comeback victory. I remember reading about this game in Friday Night Lights. The only other video I have seen of Boobie was on the DVD extras in the movie, and Gary Gaines' show after the season ending loss the next week. The movie itself I found rather disappointing. Extremely hard to tackle, but Crow got most of the carries. Even the schools' marching bands taunted each other before the game on the field during warmups. Incredible game. Go Colts! Class of 88

luxy009 1 year ago
@luxy009 I believe 1996. I know it was in by 1996, but it MIGHT have come in 1995 only in the playoffs.

A high school game that isn't even the State Final selling out a 66,000 seat stadium, and being broadcast regionally... nearly unheard of outside of Texas

penetrations and first downs? never heard of ot down there in texas?
marty34156 1 year ago
@marty34156 We've had overtime since 1996, the same year the NCAA implemented it. But in playoff situations, a winner MUST be determined, unlike the NCAA, so we had to come up with creative solutions.

@goten1214
ahhh i see well obviously in playoffs you need a winner, jsut wandered why they didnt go to ot. cuz im from pa where its the same didnt get ot till 96 but prior to that in playoffs they'd go to ot
marty34156 1 year ago
@goten1214 There was a 1972 playoff game in Louisiana which was tied 0-0. Tied on penetrations. Tied on first downs. The game was replayed four days later. The winning team then got two days rest and had to play the state championship game, which they won.
DNSKansas 1 year ago
@DNSKansas Thanks for that bit of info! I know that at one point in Texas, total yards was the tiebreaker after first downs... I know of at least one game with a team needing 2 first downs to win on total yards which they got. Not sure when that was accepted.

in the movie boobie is 45 and in this comer is why ? and in the movie comer wasnt good but in real life he was good
cokewave29 1 year ago
@cokewave29 - In the movie, the director had to match up footage with the 2003 Permian team. So, the starting tailback on the '03 team wore #45, Berg decided to make Boobie 45 in the movie. Saved tons of filming.
