Golem is extremely slow (way slower then sandslash) and you have to trade to get him. Onix is decent, but his low attack is annoying, unlesss you have screech. Plus that annoying 4x weakness to water and grass is not cool bro.

Sandslash is pretty powerful though with sword dance, earthquake, hyper beam, rockslide. Dugtrio is pretty awesome too since it's the fastest ground type and it is actually pretty strong. But weak defensively.

you could get diamond, pearl, or platinum. those are the only ones out for ds. they're coming out with ds remakes for gold and silver but you'll have to wait a year. you could go for firered and leafgreen, they're for gamboy but you can play them on ds and they're remakes of red and blue(green)

Anything really...If you like the old ones, try to find Fire Red and Leaf Green in your local game store. If you want the new ones get Diamond, Pearl, or Platinum...

Maybe you could even find Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald if you're lucky.
