  • Hello Nixie,

I recently installed Ubuntu 9.04 on an old slow-running Toshiba laptop as a single OS.

Like you said, there are no codecs to play mp3 and/or video.

I followed your instructions, but it didn't help.

    What can be the reason(-s)?

Can it be due to the fact that the laptop is wired to the Internet via a router?

    Any other reasons whatsoever?

  • @Angriffer i think you need a running internet to download the codecs

  • lets fuck!!

  • Followed your steps and ran into a problem with the restricted extras. Had some kind of ULA agreement and then closed the terminal and now it is not finishing and I can't use the software center to install it. What to do now?

  • nixie! your tutorials rock!

  • Each time you comment on something you're doing in the terminal, your voice is just beyond awesome. :-)

  • are you some windows hater hun ???

  • Dear nixie,

The easiest way to install all the extra stuff - well, as far as formats are concerenced - is after adding the Medibuntu repository, installing the non-free-codecs package. This pulls in codecs, flash, even Java, but it doesn't seem to pull in libdvdcss2.

    Blessings,

    Shahar

  • you know why im listening to YOUR tutorial... hope it's good :( if no im stuck for 3:18

  • Thx Nixie I'd be lost on Linux with out your help.

  • Whats the difference between Linux and Ubuntu Linux?

  • @Penduluman ubuntu is based on linux :D kinda like saying linux = windows and ubuntu = Xp, vista, 7, 98 etc.. so ubuntu is a variant of linux.. There are a tons of other linux distributions like fedora, openSuSE, mint, puppylinux etc. etc... Hope that helped :D

  • cool video, but sound could be better.

  • I think I'm a little late for the big prize contest. hummm

    i LOVE the internet!

  • Ooooooooooooooooo.... I will glad if all the women of the world are like you.

    I LOVE UUUU

  • $ sudo delete microsoft

  • GET VLC IT WILL DO EVERYTHING MULTIMEDIA

  • Hey, beauty! I'm an ubuntu newbie. I like it so far but the problem I'm experiencing is that I cannot see any videos, not in chrome not in firefox!!! Please, tell me what I can do, cause I've seen many forums and non of them seem to help.

  • @boricuandragon : just install flash.

  • I love Linux but multimedia on Linux is totally shit, absolutely and disgustingly and abominably shit.

    It NEVER works.

totem player is crap, mplayer is crap, kaffeine is crap, are there more, if so I bet they are crap too.

Why can't all Linux developers get together and develop a proper standard ***SINGLE**** player that fucking works on all distros with NO PROBLEMS with no codec problems...if I had the knowledge I would help myself :-(

    Linux multimedia is fucking rubbish.

    Rant over.

  • @donnyab A lot of those problems have been resolved in Ubuntu 10.10

I know the past problems were pretty bad. I used put up with washed out colors in the video editor (Kino).

  • @tonyinspokane

Ok, I have Debian installed at the moment ... so tell me exactly which player will play DVDs (region 2 encoded ) with ZERO problems ?.

  • @donnyab VLC should work in Debian. You might have to get the codecs. Of course you van always try Ubuntu 10.10 and give it a test drive.

  • wow. you are very beautyful ;*

  • cant you help me basic command thanks

  • r@ubuntu:~$ apt-get -f install

E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied)

E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?

Not sure how to go root as I should be the "admin" user equivalent but I'm not sure I am on the root file or how to get there.

  • @durk20 Run it with sudo. Also 'sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras' gives you all stuff you need like Flash, Java and so.

  • @durk20 trick is in using prefix sudo before command, she said it in video.

your 2nd post: you didnt add repository she told you to add.

omg typical ubuntu users, ask, but dont listen :S

  • @thomaspruzina I did that idiot I cut that out so it would fit in the comment boxes. You can not get that error without sudo.

  • Comment removed

  • Please help I got this error and can not install my win32 codecs. I am on a laptop duel booting win 7 as my primary OS.

    r@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get install w32codecs

is only available from another source

  • @durk20

give up and go back to Media Player...its pointless.

  • Thank you so much

  • oh come on... forget the ubuntu tutorial.. and lets talk about your body tutorial.

  • @CaraMello21 lol

  • yes...you are so sexy...cute voice too.

  • Hi, great vids, and also its always nice to learn something with a bonner, lol lol.

  • new to linux loving the tutorials

  • Ironically the day I tried to watch this video Google Chrome and Firefox both crashed every time I wanted to see a video. A solution came from the Ubuntu Forum that suggested checking out a Firefox add-on called Flash-Aid. It checks for conflicting Adoobe versions. Added it and everything works great-in Firefox. Don't know what I'm going to have to do get Chrome working.

  • love you!

  • OMG Thank you for that .... computer saavy but linux incompetent ... thank you thank you thank you

  • You are hot and a nerd. Are you associated with SKYNET?

  • @derekwhite26 my girlfriend is hotter and a nerd too :P

  • @Kailaner I'm jealous. So respectfully if you will, please go kill yourself.

  • hi Nixie can you tel me how to fix wireless

  • your hot.

  • hi nixie, thank u for teaching us. and your so pretty.once again thank you and god bless you.

  • girls cant linux, your all crazy

  • Hey guys, you shouldn't put all those freaky reactions on NixiePixel's vids. I know she is beautiful but that 's now how you impress a lady

  • Anyone know why when I view videos on ubuntu, it wont play the audio? Thanks :)

  • I love you! I needed that feminine touch wrapped around Linux in video to help friends along.

    Are you on Facebook?

    Best Regards,

    JJMacey

    jjmacey net blog

  • Thank you!

  • now did any of you click the video because of linux or was it because it's a chick?

  • You are HOT!!!

  • can you write codes or design/ write programs

  • i love u thank u sooo much

  • check out my Linux channel people! nothing but Linux and Opensource Goodness! :)

  • Does Ubuntu not have a package for MPlayer or FFMpeg? libavformat should provide a layer of abstraction between all the different codecs (speex, vorbis, flac, libmp3lame, xvidcore, x264, etc.)

  • You people seem to be confused by Linux. It's really easy actually

  • She remind me a girl in a movie, it was about hackers..

  • i love you, and i use mac osx :). We need more hot chix explaining codecs :P

  • Nixie my beautiful hot lady. On Fedora to get the codecs downloaded and installed is to to go rpmfusion. Once there you click on Configuration at the top. Once you are on the page then you click on both free and non-free to add the repositories. Then you just click on whatever you are wanting to listen or watch and if the system doesn't have the codecs then it downloads it.

  • Nice vid but easyer way is to open terminal and type : sudo aptitude search vlc

Then look for what u need and if u just wanna see vid's just type :

sudo aptitude install vlc mozilla-plugin-vlc vlc-plugin-pulse

    Best and easyest way. Enjoy

  • Thanks but install VLC. It comes with all codecs

  • Download VLC. It comes with all codecs!

  • what do i do if i dont have a Ubuntu but i have a deff Linux

  • 79.98.199.130:27005

This guy haxd my css server..

PWN HIM AND SAY HI FROM the minigame eclipse :)

  • your voice changed?

  • just one more thing... with ubuntu tweak you can find this codecs and also personalize your ubuntu easyly ^^

  • mencoder in synaptic repositories

  • You can do all of this using Ubuntu Tweak, that way you don't need any coding.

On Ubuntu Tweak you can install various different programs and codecs and it's all very up to date (a lot of prog. are actually newer than the ones on the Ubuntu repos.).

Plus with Ubuntu Tweak you can customize your distro and quite a bit more. :)

  • your voice is so sexy, and your eyes

  • I <3 NixiePixel

  • codecs (sounds like a pill for nasal problems)

  • i need you. :)

  • man you are cute as hell

    lol

  • Keep up the good work! Talk nerdy to me!

  • you are so freakin cute! i'm not gonna get all creepy and/or pervy. just figured you would like to know, in case you don't already. :]

  • Linux is pretty easy, all of these procedures are pretty easy to do, you just got to be very computer savvy and know what you're doing. I, personally dont like to go through all the customization Linux HAS to be done, thats why I got a Macbook Pro :) oh and I got a gaming tower with Windows 7 on it.

  • @Andrewterrorist you got the money for that

  • @bocanada81 Well if money is not available, linux is for those kind of people too.

  • Call me babe I know that you love geeks, I can give you also some advices about Ubuntu xD

  • dam baby you are fine

  • sexy geek......love it.....

  • just install ubuntu-restricted-extras and remember to switch over to VLC media player

  • to install codecs, MS fonts and flash just open a terminal and type:

    sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

  • You might run into some errors. If you do, in terminal, run sudo apt-get install update

  • ur cute

  • I think Linux Mint has all of this installed from out of the box.

  • what is the difference between Fedora and Ubuntu?

Could u give me ur experience on that ?

  • @eklizia For anyone wondering about the different comparisons there are open source virtualization solutions such as Qemu or VirtualBox which will allow you to install and test different operating system setups literally side-by-side.

  • @eklizia Ubuntu is based off Debian, while Fedora is based off Red Hat.

They are both good OSes to use, but they command lines are slightly different.

Other than that, they can both do pretty much the same thing, including compiz, and any applications that you like but sometimes things are just easier on ubuntu.

  • How to do this manual? without direct internet conection ? (And for suse, and fedora linux)

  • btw one word GREED. I would remove greed from Human Genome.

  • This is just what I need, you're grate and I like the way how you make your videos and present it. This is second time I'm bumping in your video, both time you provide information I need, it's time to subscribe. Thanks for having you.

  • @givepeaceforall obviously single...pl0x?

  • linux is nice but to paste code from around that world, that anyone at all can post... not for me!!

  • your hott.

  • Frankly speaking I personally don't like your speach since it shows all major linux problems again. But I do like you personally. I think such pretty girl like you could find more interesting things to do instead.

  • @zorgiev,

what exactly do u want her to talk about? baking and house cleaning?

All Linux users who love Linux get it and understand it because of a constant exchange of idea regardless of who they are or where they come from. I am sure if this was a guy speaking you wouldn't even have commented. Exposing problems will push towards resolving them, forgetting about them doesn't make them go away. I am a Linux system admin by profession, but i will listen to anyone who has something good to add.
