The Love Bug Rally (released in US as Superbug!) was first of four German-produced rip-offs from 1971 1975. They claimed to be spoofs and didnt have the same characters or plots so they were allowed to market the films in US (without Love Bug in the title, though it was in the marketing). First film finds the magical VW named Du-du meeting up with Ben (Jimmy Bondie in the sequels) at an African (German settlement) road rally. I own/seen sequel Superbug Goes Wild on VHS and Du-du is yellow.

Let's just say it has its fans and was an international success. Today, probably more in a Mystery Science Theater kind of way. If you google Superbug Dudu you will find some interesting sites with photos of the yellow VW flying and driving up walls.. In so doing I noticed that Superbug Goes Wild, Superbug Rides Again and Superbug Secret Agent are available on DVD at Amazon. For reviews you have to go to IMDB com. The German Amazon site has a box set of all the films.

Perhaps even more strange is that in 1970, Disney's Dean Jones (Jim Douglas of the Disney Love Bug series), made an Italian film marketed in the U.S. as Mr. Superinvisible and promoting a "Shaggy Dog." Even though it was a family film, Dean Jones had a nude scene! Ironically, other elements of the film would show up in Disney's Now You See It, Now You Don't and Disney's The Shaggy D.A. (also with Dean Jones).
