Of great archival interest but not even GG can replace an orchestra in this voice/orchestra masterwork. The voice must grow out of the orchestra and the intended effect does not work without one.
Lois Marshall, la mejor versión que anda por youtube, una maravilla porque se recrea en cada palabra y frase....exagerando los momentos culmines y endulzando los mas sentimentales. Maravillosa.
trying to enjoy this on the piano is like trying to enjoy Monet while being color-blind. I love Gould at 2:13, "are they watching ME yet?!". Long live Gould and the new audiences he continues to find!
Lois Marshall was a contemporary of Moreen Forrester and Glenn Gould - she was stricken with polio I believe which resulted in a limp (if memory serves me right). CBC television produced an opera for her so that she could enjoy this aspect of her singing career, but otherwise I understand that she was not so much involved in opera productions as recitals etc.
wow, this is fantastic... what a gorgeous voice... the piano loses a great deal, but a heavens what a nice voice. The same tenderness as schwarzkopf...almost coloratura. What marvelous delicacy... who is this gal?????
I was born in 1962... when the world was black and white.
to apropermonk and polyphony, Greetings:According to'Wondrous Strange': "His(Gould)third program,Richard Strauss:A Personal View, broadcast in October 1962,was a sort of replay of his all-Strauss Stratford concert of the previous year, and once again his performances, including the first movement of the Violin Sonata(with Schumsky),songs with Lois Marshall, and music from the Bourgeois gentilhomme Suite, illustrated a polemical defence of Strauss' style." There's your answer.Broadcast in 1962.
Sorry, I don't know the date of this recording -- however, if anyone does, please leave me a note in the comments section as I would be very interested in knowing it as well.

Thanks so much for posting. I had no idea this existed. Started watching as I'm a Gould fan; by the end I was a Lois Marshall fan too.

Glenn Gould "violin solo" is so sublim that it make you forget the violin sound.

I am only 16, but this swept me to tears. Lois Marshall was truly a Canadian Hero.

Bravo Marshal! I agree, true Straussian; the lack of orchestration, however, erodes texture and looses some of the beef, don't you think?

How refreshing to hear somebody who sings Strauss and make it sound like Strauss.
Sensitivity «à fleur de peau».
Thank you so much polyphony

Happy to help with anything of a Gouldian nature - he was one in a billion and opened my ears.
