Windows 7 is actually Windows 6.1 for application compatibility, because most applications only check the major version number and not the minor version. Windows 7 is version 6.1 because it is very similar to Vista.

Ironically enough, Windows 7 is also Windows 6 (6.1 to be exact).

I don't know why Microsoft didn't bump it up a whole major version... I guess they figured it was similar enough to Vista that it wasn't worth a whole version bump but didn't know what to call it so they just called it 7 to make it sound more different from 6.

If you don't believe me, google 'show browser headers' and you'll notice that windows 7 is identified as Windows NT 6.1, and Vista is 6.0.

(And xp is 5.1, 2000 is 5.0...)

NT was more stable than 98 (if I am correct), so they decided it was better to follow the stability line of NT, which was why XP was also good. Vista did not follow NT, I don't think, hence the reason it sucked so much balls. Windows 7 is just a version of NT, but upgraded. Windows 8 looks terrible, I might "dual boot" it (what a fuckin joke that'll be xD)
