  • good do it on a mellophone

  • oh my god it that like a left handed trumpet? or is that just the camera?

  • @TheRedteam17

    Its just the camera lol

  • @mugo8 no you mouthpiece is on the left but there suppose to be on the right.. yours is built the opposite way.....

  • right on man!

  • If this was a Solo for Trumpets, you would've played it. But because of this video I fidguered it out on the Mello. Thanks Bro.

  • Awesome! The vibrato was very emotional

  • sick! do what irish knight said.

  • Do you use diaphragm vibrato? I didn't see your fingers or jaw moving. If so, props.

  • Yo how old are yu man?

  • wow your really good have you thought of trying out for phantom regiment? or any other corps? you would so most likely make it

  • BTW....I dont have sheet music, I found this out strictly by ear. All of the videos featuring me alone, I dont have sheet music for. All by ear.

  • @mugo8 I have sheet music. Its in a tricky key. Its in F# minor for trumpets. I also think this sounds better on a Flugelhorn. However all I got was a horn for this summer. sounds awesome on a horn. Trumpet isnt mello enough.

  • Sorry I havent been replying to any comments on here. Kinda lost track.

But thank you for all the complements and constructive criticism. And for all of you who have been saying that i should march drum corps, well i am. I will be marching with Forte Drum and Bugle corps (Open Class).

  • @TheBack2back Thanks

  • Just used this video to transcribe and use for tuba, and it's a very fun solo! Great job!

  • no i do not march drum corps....i wish i did though

  • beautiful

  • Bravo!

  • i wanted to ask how you do your vibrado... i dont know if i spelledthat right. but you know what i mean. also. do you have the notes to that solo. if you do can you send them to me. if not i will try and see if i can listen and learn.. thanks for the video post. "also it's very nice"

  • Some players use their fingers on the valve and shake it. That's how my Phantom Friends do it. Others I know do it with fluctuations in air. I know a guy in Crown who uses his jaw. If you play Mellophone I have the notes

  • could you give me the notes?

  • if you hav the mello score can you plz post that for me? i'm goin to try to learn it. lol

  • I loved this solo since i first heard it, im sure this video has been out for awhile but i was just wondering if you could perhaps send me the notes, if not, its cool. You sound great, keep it up

  • oh and btw is that a lefty trumpet ir was that the camera??

  • it was the camera

  • Comment removed

  • Its not the horn that creates the sound, the horn is merely amplification. Its all about the person playing it.

  • dude could you give me a couple tips on vibrato??

  • sure!!!

what would you like to know?

  • um idk how to do it lol

  • well, there are two ways to do vibrato..either with your lips or by moving the horn away and to your face(calmly not violently). If you are just starting to use vibrato, try it by moving the horn away and to your face. This kinda gives you an idea of what it feels and sounds like. Lip vibrato uses the slightest movement from the chin but it requires some steady chops so

if you feel that you can do the lip vibrato right away, then try it out....see which one you prefer.

  • kk thanks man keep up the good work!!

  • you sound amazing dude are you trying out for phantom?

  • Thanks!!!

I dont know, but i want to tryout for Phantom

  • are you gonna try out next year?

  • No....when im in college, hopefully i can tryout...i am a junior in high school as of now

  • yeah that makes sence a lot of people wait till college

  • Very Nice!...Any trumpet suggestions because im still on a student trumpet...But with a 3c mouthpiece...its sounds good and ill probably keep it for marching band...But for an orchaestra...any suggestions?

  • You would really want a more open sound for an orchestra, but a tone that can blend in with the orchestra......Bach Stradivarius, Yamaha Xeno.....maybe Stomvi or Getzen

  • Oh yeah, and you could probably use a larger mouthpiece. You have a great sound, just a tad little bit thin.

  • i was using a schilke 13a4a, but its not a permanent mouthpiece.

  • Hmm, then you probably need a more professional horn, cause you got some great chops.

  • THATS WHAT I HAVE BEEN TELLING MY PARENTS!!!......they think every trumpet sounds the same:/

  • In fact, you sound like you need a horn with a larger bore. Test one out at a music store, you'll see what I mean.

You got a monster sound being squeezed through a small hole. Newer horn! Newer horn! Newer Horn!...with a larger bore.

  • Good stuff! Is that an intermediate or student horn? I'd like to see you try playing that on a bach strad or a yamaha zeno! You'd get a lot more air through which would help your tone tremendously.

  • Yeah, I was temporarily using it.

I play on a Holton MF,but even that horn has some tone problems...its a jazz horn so the natural tone is kinda bright.

I would love to have a yamaha zeno!!!!

  • Yeah man, you definitely have the chops for Phantom. I tried out for them on contra and got 1's at the first audition. I couldn't march though because I had obligations with my college at the time. A scholarship. Plus I was straining to pay some past dues from my previous corps. The Troopers. lol

  • Thanks.

What year did you try out for them?

  • I marched Troop in 1999. I auditioned that fall and got in. I went to a couple more auditions until I couldn't. But I got to march and passed an audition from a top 12 corps. I also got to march in one of the greatest college marching bands in the nation.

  • im auditioning as a contra to but for blue devils and hmmm

cud you give me some tips? please and thank you!

  • I played contra. Just get in shape. lots of pushups because they sit on your shoulder longer than you think.

Keep your jaw nice and low and lots of air.

And don't forget to take showers. I hated those guys who were shy and ended up stinkin' up the bus. Nothing wrong with showering around others. it's just weiner. lol

  • thanks oh yea ive always wondered how many valves does a contra have and what key..also what corp did you march for?

  • It's not a contra-bass bugle anymore. It's just a tuba. And they usually have 4 valves.

I marched with some of the finest people in this country. Been to many cities, have performed in almost all of the major football stadiums.

I hope you march and get in.

  • oh what key wud it be in? is it similar to a c tuba??

  • Bb. I think some corps use C, I'm not too sure.

  • Nice job man!

  • i like it on mello better, lol. . .but you've got decent chops and have more of a mellophone sound (if there even is such a thing), you might look to pick up a mello and give it a try

  • Thanks. I actually have played it on mellophone many times, but dont own one. Im trying out for a mellophone spot when I try out for a drum corps.

Horn/Mellophone just so happens to be my second(minor) instrument,so that might have some influence on my sound.

  • do u have sheet music?

  • no,learned it by ear.

  • you have great tone!!!!!

  • Why?

There are many horn players that play trumpet solos.

I dont see what the harm is.

  • if you can play it as well as he can then it doesn't matter

  • Thats what im talkn bout!!!

  • he's just pissed he cant play as well as you can! haha

  • are you in PR or did you just figure it out either way amazing sound man

  • i figured it out myself.

  • ok that's what i did for the canon. that's really good then

  • You know the Canon to!!!???

I wrote out the canon for our brass section in youth orchestra. We play it a lot.

  • yeah. have you written this out cause for the last 15 min i've been playing the solo with your recording but i can't quite get it all?

  • No. All by ear.

  • are you in atlanta youth symphony orchestra?

  • Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra

  • you gonna audition for Phantom next year

  • Well,I really cant do anything drum corps related till college and Im only a junior in high school so Im thinking about BD,Cavies,or PR.

  • yeah i'm only in high school so probally next year i'll audition for PR or Crown but man your sound is amazing for being in junior high you're gonna make it in any corps if you keep practicing!!!!

  • Thanks.

    What grade are u in?

  • 10th

  • Alright,u got a little more time than i do.

U should upload a video of yourself playing something. Now I wanna know how you sound on trumpet.

  • i'll try but the last time i tried i couldn't and i'm not just saying that i really would but i'll keep trying and if i can i'll play the spartacus solo. If not hopefully i'll see you in PR

  • That would be great.

Can u tell me ur name, just in case we meet in PR.

  • Tyler Elvidge. Yours?

  • Nathan Banegas. Last name pronounced buhnaygus.

  • contact me when you audition

  • Alright.

Just so you know,i'll probably audition for mellophone cause they get the fun parts.

  • ok that's cool. what year are you auditioning in?

  • 2010

  • yeah i wanna audition this year but i'll probally audition in 2010 too. good luck though

  • Same to you

  • thanks

  • sheet music?

  • no.....sorry.

  • its called vibrato . not " waves in his sound" its a good thing

  • wanna say thanks, listened to you play this a few times and was able to get it by ear off of you. might post a response with credit to you. thanks bro

  • well done! great sound

  • ignoring the waves in ur sound, that was pretty damn good.

i'm not a brass player so i'm not gonna criticize u on technique or embouchure cuz i wouldn't know any of it.

but for being a sax player, i guess i can say that ur really good.

  • the waves are vibrato. you cant really play out of tunes with yourself

  • yeah ive had them on 4 almost a year and a half. im a sophomore right now and i should be getting them off by september. my problem is i hav a lot of air in my sound that really affects my playing.

  • That tends to be a problem everyone faces, but it may vary for other people.

I have a friend who played with braces for quite some time, and his sound was airier than mine. The reason, his embouchre is shifted to the right side of his face.Mine is also to the right, but not as much as his.

  • did u hav to play with them? and do u think they affect ur playing alot?

  • Yes,i played with braces for 2 years.

They affected my playing a lot and

the only good thing was that i could play higher.I was rippin out high Cs and Ds in 9th grade.

Its different though for other people.

Some people have a harder time adjusting and getting the air flow through the embouchre.

    Do u have braces?

  • You've got a really great sound!

  • Ah. One of my favorite solo's ever. It's beautiful! Do you happen to have the sheet music for it?

  • learned it by ear....so no sheet music.

  • Oh well. Awesome job anyways!

  • beautiful playing, you should have auditioned for BD

  • Freakin Awesome dude!! ur good. really nice melody.

  • Very mournful! Nice vibrato, almost perfect. I play flute, whenever I try vibrato it's French-style. +5, +Fav.

    ~ET.

  • very good!

  • that was beautiful bro. you still playing in highschool or what?

  • Thanks man!!!

Yeah,Im a junior in high school.

I really want to play for either Blue Devils,Phantom or Cavaliers.

  • if you want to play good music, phantom all the way. Cavaliers is more visual than music. Blue devils, im sorry im just not into jazz. But phantom, i love everything they play.

  • Well, Phantom is the ideal drum corps for me cause thats the area of music(classical/orchestral) im going to study in college. And because they r really damn loud and sound good while doin it.

I like Jazz though, but BD is too damn far away:(

  • And they are generally more classy of a corps. Sorry but there are so many thugs and beach bums in the Devils. Plus their season starts earlier, costs more, and you can't have a life outside of drum corps to be in the devils.

Your solo was brilliant, very solid. Wish I could play a horn that well. I may have to get out my old horn and see if I can do this too. Nice vid.

  • sry, didn't read thru comments, answeared own question.

  • Is the vid mirrored, or is that a left handed trumpet? I've never seen one of those before.

  • dude, awesome! could i be a biter, and ask for the music? please.

  • i'm actually in the colorguard

but i played mello and alto sax in high school and i'm a music major with a focus on piano and composition.

so although i wore a short slave outfit, i'm not completely musically retarded.

    it's a nice combo.

  • i love this show so much, i can't watch it without getting goosebumps everytime. ppl say that perfection is impossible, but this show disproved that =]

  • stupid computer did not tell me i posted two comments.

the second comment was a retry.

ok. i will stop commenting now.

    go practice.

  • hahaha.lmao.

    What do you play?

  • Hey! you sound really good. it's cool that you liked it enough to take the time to learn it for yourself, along with other drum corps stuff.

spartacus was a really fun show to perform.

ps the mello soloist would always run a lap before playing his solo when we ran chunks of the show in rehearsal to simulate the out of breath performance anxiety.

    SUTA

  • oh man. such a fun show to perform. you seem like a drum corps fan (wonder how i got that idea, oh wait...)

glad you enjoyed the show(s) enough to learn them for yourself!

    ps you sound really good.

    SUTA

  • spartacus

    best show ever

  • Wow, awesome! Great tone!

  • you've got pretty solid chops.

watch the vibrato, though. It's a little fast and fairly constant.

    Nice job, though.

  • melloz ftw!!!

    sounds pretty good tho

  • sick tone quality

  • ok is the picture reversed or are you playing a left handed trumpet?

  • its reversed

  • Would it be possible for you to send me the notes or the fingerings ?

  • nice....would you be able to send me the notes/fingering as well?

  • Cool!!
