He is by no means any kind of authority on Islam, or at least not any bigger an authority than, say, Benny Morris, an Israeli historian of the Israel & Arab-Israeli conflict - which didn't stop the latter author from peppering his otherwise praiseworthy "Righteous Victims" with ignorant islamophobic tripe. The difference is, Morris is an invaluable historian regardless of his politics, while Lewis' scholarship was always filtered through his ideological framework.

First of all, Lewis was a historian of the Arab peoples (he wouldn't prefer the plural, it's all 'Arabs' to him), and a pretty bellicose and second rate at that, his prominence and influence having to do with the establishment cold war think thanks, not his academic output, which was and remains pretty scandalous. Not to mention his 'opinion' on the Armenian genocide in 1915.

In verse 9:5 (the verse of the sword = ayat saif) Allah tells the Muslims that after the four sacred months (Rajab, Zulqad, ZulHajj, Muharram) have passed, slay (fight and kill) the pagans wherever they are found. Ibn Kathir writes that this means, the earth in general. That means this verse is not meant only for the Meccans pagans; it is applicable all around the globe, even today. This verse alone abrogates (cancels) about 124 verses that espouse mercy, tolerance and forgiveness to the pagans.

In dhimmitude no non-muslim was or is ever allowed to hold a position of authority or be economically prosperous due to a tax they're forced to pay their islamic overlords called the jizya. If they don't pay it then they're beheaded. As for ISrael, first of all they and we worship the same God, and our feud with them over "Palestine" is political not religious (religious differences are only widening the gap), and God didn't help the Muslims in that fight because Islam today is an empty shell of what it should be in terms of people's faith and obeying God's law.
