Actually it looks like they were on an uninvolved portion of the building attempting to place master streams. The gas leak is common hazard to any structure fire we go into.
Only by the Grace of God and NOT the IC's ability to make good decisions on this incident did the LAFD not have several funerals to plan. When its all said and done you have to ask yourself what are we risking. The lives of numerous firefighters that can't be replaced, for a building that no matter how good a job you do is going to be bulldozed. Unreal! Thank God they are OK.
As a BC, I would not send anyone on that roof. It already vented itself,so I would not take a chance of that roof failing. Type 2 construction will not hold up with that much fire. Surround and drown time.
I completely agree that there was no reason to go on that roof. The fire had vented itself and they could have done a surround and drown and stayed safe.
yea. I have never understood that either.. I am all the time see vids where there are ppl venting the roof however the fire has already eaten its own way through.. whats the point in trying to vent now? lol. Are they just looking for something to do to make them look special or do they just not know how vertical ventilation works??
Yeah, at :49 seconds in this video when the narrator says their was an undetected gas leak, the Tillerman was supposed to shut the gas off when he gots off the Truck!
Yeah, that's what I was taught when I was in the explorer program with L.A. City 10 years ago, but I was also taught the Tillerman shuts off the utilities before he joins the truck company on the roof...
You are correct however, he shuts off utilites at a single family dwelling. It also depends on how large the dwelling is and what the fire conditions are like. Example if we have a good going fire the A/O will need him on the roof. Prioity. Whats more important? Every company might change or modify its operations.
And yes, you do what you can do before more help arrives, but you do that SAFELY!!!! I cant see anyone else agreeing that that is safe. Your knowledge on truss roof is greatly inadequate for being a fire chief. Everyone knows that once one truss goes they can all go. Truss roofs are the most unpredictable roof around and unless your ladders strech from side wall to side wall, distributing your weight is useless!!!
Also I would NOT WANT to be on your Dept if you are going to send me on that roof!!! How can you actually believe that that is a safe operation. I dont care where the building is located.... Im am not going to risk the lives of my guys or your guys to try and save a building that is lost... Buildings can be replaced!!! Our lives cant!!!! I hope you do know that a truss roof may seem strong and safe but after a little heat, that metal expands and those trusses can come down.
im in training to become a firefighter, and i totally agree with you... no matter how big that fire is, its not worth anyones life. the main factor is getting the surrounding buildings safe so it doesnt spread far. some people are idiots to even begin to think you should get on that roof. anyone who has gone through any training knows to follow your gut. and i know kn one in their right mind feels good about getting up there.
@powerstroke4life i i'm a firefighter to, and i've lost 50 of my brothers by they going inside a burning building or standing on the roof, since that amount of lost we only go inside when we think that some one is inside.
we losed 10 days ago again on [the 50th one]
its hart to see you brothers dieing in fire or building collapse.
why the fuck are they even on the fucking roof? The fire has already vented itself. Get deck guns and ladder pipes into operation that way no firefighters are in danger from an unsafe roof!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Even venting aside, it's just stupid to be on a roof over THAT kind of fire. It's brave, yes, and I could never argue against the bravery of firefighters, but good grief.
yes cut holes! they can't get to the big hole because of the heat so they cut another one to get water to the base of the fire! they are on the damn roof for the same reason!! they don't have enough deck guns for everyone, and they aren't just going to stand around!!! you can tell that none off you have any idea what you are talking about and none of you are firefighters. so if you don't know what's going on keep your fucking comments off of here
RCMXCHAMP.... With your comments made above, I hope that you are NOT a firefighter!!!! Your comments are not only ridiculous but just plain stupid!!!! First of all, vent holes are NOT for access to the base of a fire, those things lower, called doors and windows, are for reaching the base of the fire. Secondly, if we didnt have enough deck guns for everyone, the smart thing would be to stand around or call for more equipment.
That roof is a truss roof and will fail just as quick at that gas line lit up!!! So personally, I'd rather stand around till more equipment arrived rather than laying down ready to be burried under 6' of soil!!!! So I believe you are the one that doesnt know what's going on and should keep your stupid comments off here!!!!
even if it is a truss roof you check for stability first and then use ground pads or ladders to distribute your weight. if you would rather stand around then i'm glad your not on my department. and by the way i was on the heavy rescue team for 18 years. i'm not saying that you don't know what your talking about i'm just saying that on this particular one you don't
Well, as everyone knows or should know, when you cut a hole in a roof the fire will travel towards that hole and in no time be blowing out that hole. So all you did was successfully spread the fire to an un burned section. And at NO time did I say to enter the building!!! OF COURSE IT'S TOO HOT!!!! But that is why you remove those windows and apply water to the base of the fire through the open windows. Putting guys on that roof is RIDICULOUS!!!!
DaveEngine33.... I'm a fire chief in lima Michigan, now they did cut holes in the roof to get water to the fire NOT vent holes those are totally different these are access holes! with that big of a fire it's too hot inside to go in so to get to the base of the fire you have to cut holes! and no you don't just wait around for more equipment the building is in the center of town! yes call for more help but don't just stand around, do what you can until more help arrives
Are you saying that roof isn't vented????? All these comments about going on that roof are absolutely ridiculous!!!!!! So, why do you have to MAKE the roof????

I agree with you, you have to make a risk assesment. Is a building worth the live of any firefighter? at thar point i woud go defensive.

Sorry but you are wrong. In a commercial structure fire like this one. The tillerman goes to the roof. Utilites are for 2nd or even 3rd truck.
