The idea of a tax credit to pay for medical expenses is an intriguing idea. However, in what I propose is a higher standard exemption per individual. Tax credits can backfire and result in serious fraud.
Is this a WA state Roach? How about a reduction in overall taxes? The fact is most families might use their employer coverage if it wasn't so expensive. Tax breaks is just us thinking that the government somehow controls our lives, when they only have certain Constitutional powers--health care is NOT one of them.

They don't have the money, period.

The funny thing is that people actually believe government is going to make it better. There're are two winners with these health care bills, 1. insurance companies- mandating it just increased their customer base. So much for "beating" them up. 2. You mean well, but already too many doctors are refusing to take on more Medicare patients because Medicare does not compensate adequately. Obamacare will backfire because doctors will revolt and refuse all Medicare patients.
If we had health care for all (Medicare for everyone) the doctors and hospitals would have to go along. If they didn't, they would be out of a job. Doctors might even have to sell one of their Mercedes.
Europe has universal coverage for its' citizens. We should be able to afford it also. We just have to give up the idea of EMPIRE!!!

One of the (federal) governments primary constitutional responsibilities is to provide a national defense. Presumably, the military bases are needed to accomplish this. Perhaps we don't need most or many of these to achieve security.

This is a sentiment expressed frequently when people talk about lowering costs. I don't know if it stands tho- many people choose careers based on their interests and their desire to help people (think about teachers).
It might challenge over-the-top tuition rates for medical school. But even that works on supply and demand. Fewer students (less demand) could mean more competitive schools and tuition. Just a thought...
It could also result in a lowering of standards in order to produce more "qualified" medical personnel. Look at the "No Child Left Behind" crap. All they teach now is enough for kids to pass proficiency tests. The US used to be #1 in education on the entire planet. Where are we now? The solution isn't to give the government MORE MONEY for FAILED programs -- and all government programs are failures -- it's to DEFUND them, post haste.

Medicare and Medicaid are pretty much hailed by economists as a big success. Also Amtrak is pretty well liked by those who ride on it. Just wish the network was more comprehensive.
As for Cash 4 Clunkers, well, it depends how you measure success. As a result of C4C, the average fuel efficiency of vehicles on the road leapt from 15.8 mpg to 24.9 mpg. How much money will that save long-term, as well as helping the environment?

I have a lot of family in Italy. same old crap. I had an uncle wait two years for a hip replacement. I had another uncle die only 3 years after his bypass because it was not done correctly. My sister is an MD and she diagnoses their problems over the phone because their physicians are apparently incapable of making the correct diagnosis. I have not seen anything good in what they have. quite frankly, private enterprise does it better. government is slow, inefficient, wans wasteful.

One of the (federal) governments primary constitutional responsibilities is to provide a national defense. Presumably, the military bases are needed to accomplish this. Perhaps we don't need most or many of these to achieve security.

This is a sentiment expressed frequently when people talk about lowering costs. I don't know if it stands tho- many people choose careers based on their interests and their desire to help people (think about teachers).
It might challenge over-the-top tuition rates for medical school. But even that works on supply and demand. Fewer students (less demand) could mean more competitive schools and tuition. Just a thought...

how about the 5 month old baby in England that just died ? memgenitis (spelling could be off). too busy to see the baby and it died. how about the the premature baby born at 22 weeks and they would not see it because it had to be 23 weeks old due to government regulations. nice healthcare system !
a centralized committee should not be making decisions especially based on economics. a doctor knows what he or she is doing not a government official.

So you can pick out two scandalous headlines. Great. Shall we now talk about the thousands that die every year thanks to OUR system? Or the 51% of bankruptcies in our country that are caused by medical bills because the insurer defaulted?
What about the 23% of credit card debt being accounted for by paying premiums?
A government official is just there to protect your rights, not make medical decisions. No health system in the world operates the way you paint it, including the proposed one.

I can sit here all day and point out countless needless child deaths in England. I am a parent and was apalled when the parents of this child were told to let go of the baby. there is no reason why this baby could not be attended to.
I don't know what world you live in but government officials are in charge of making life and death decisions. they base their decisions on economics my friend. I had a canadian guy brag that both his parents die at 60 and it did not cost him a thing. nice.

I live in the world where government officials are not included in the medical decision making process, in any system in the entire world (save maybe China, not sure about those guys). However repulsive your friend's brag, it does not make his grandparent's deaths the 'choice' of the government.
Again, how exactly did the government murder these people?

NOTE: People are CRAZY to buy health insurance!!! --- except for "catastropic care insurance" that covers very expensive non-optional health care expenses (over $10K or $25K or $50K usually). I have never had health insurance, and I can tell you from first hand experience that others I know behave TOTALLY differently than I when it comes to choosing what care I want or need. Plus, I call around to learn about quality and price and make my decisions on that basis. Health insurance = STUPID.

Your right, W.H.O is kidding who... I think people (like me) who are not covered by medical insurance, don't want it... it's not because I can't afford it. I spend more time, money and caution on prevention than most people do. I couldn't count on my right hand the number of times I've seen a medical doctor for anything. I don't trust them. Look what's happening with the swine flu... It's a scam. I would gladly pay for catastrophic emergency care insurance. Where do you buy it?

PUBLIC OPTION - A box on the IRS tax form for government run health-care. If you check the box you are included in the program and if you don't check the box you are excluded. The caveat is that once enrolled you must remain in the program for 5 years. It is fully funded by member taxes and poses no burden upon those who are not members. Members are taxed at whatever level it takes to fully fund the program. When the money runs out services must be denied until additional funding is available.

The government doesn't need to print money. The government borrows from China to build aircraft carriers. And then we buy stuff from China that we don't need. So China profits both ways as we get poorer.
