  • Hi, I have no idea how to throw a lead straight punch. Do you really just shoot it out like that? I have read in other places that you turn a bit more.

  • @WhirlwindWerewolf Excellent observation. In this clip I'm using a retreating footwork known as pendulum step. You wouldn't torque from the core as much because it will cause you to be off balance and recover would take to long for the next movement. Example would be if your opponent was using a low line kick to punch combo and you needed to create distance from the kick but slide a punch between the two then follow up with another counter of your own.

  • @harvey367 Ah I see. Thanks for the explanation. Defenses from lowline kicks have always interested me a great deal. Could you possibly direct me towards a clip where the pendulum step is shown? Also, if someone thew a lead hook kick to your groin what would you do? I had been sparring my friend with something that hopefully resembled a Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do stance, and he threw a lead roundhouse(hook) kick to my groin and he got past my leg because he hit with his toes...and it hurt lol.

  • @WhirlwindWerewolf In the shin-tag clip, I'm pretty sure, without looking at it, I'm using the pendulum step there at times. You have a few options. One is to evade by using some kind of retreating or angle change footwork and snapping back a counter. You can also simply intercept by closing distance with an angle change. The other could be a stop hit/stop kick or use a jam. There are various forms of these.

  • @harvey367 Thanks very much. Just to clarify though, the pendulum step is where you move the front leg first out of harm's way and then you move the back leg? Is it the same as a quick retreat?

  • @WhirlwindWerewolf The Lead leg does initiate the movement but the rear leg quickly follows. You basically are creating a pendulum effect between your legs with your body-weight distributed more forward. This is so your leg is taken out of range but your attacking hand is not. You will have to quickly recover back to your guard position. It is a version of the quick retreat. It is also very good for quickly counter kicking and you can pendulum back into a kick.

  • @WhirlwindWerewolf One thing you don't want to do is have your center of gravity past your lead knee or be in a full knee extension position. My personal preference is to keep my rear foot on the ground with some weight on it. I find I can maneuver faster this way. I can more quickly go into a punch-kick combo or recover to guard and reposition.
