  • Excellent visuals.

  • Just think one of the Four preps wrote this song ... late 50's pop group that could sing

  • So many talentless hacks have stolen this song:( That's a sad thing but even sadder is people are so brainwashed by the hype that they can't feel the SOUL in Gloria's original that puts it head and shoulders above the anaemic copies. I guess for some people to open their minds to the possibility they were sold something inferior would shatter their percieved coolness. Hey we all get played some time, the trick is to admit you were conned and move on.

Soul music, keep that faith and spread it :)

  • When I heard this, it is one of the many reasons we're glad the 1980's are over.

  • why im listening to this first time, all time soft cell ver, end of skins episode

  • Doctor Who!

  • That image of Ronald Reagan ruined it... That's the man who started the destruction of America...

  • @TradingTutor

No, that would be Joseph McCarthy who started it.

  • Heavens to Murgatroid! What a delight & joy to hear this today for the first time! I had NO idea that the tune was originally from the 60's! Super groovy, daddy-o! THANKS for uploading this awesome & amazing "blast from the past"! You've MADE my day & my weekend! CHEERS, mate! :-)

  • Finally, the original by Gloria Jones, all you ever see is Soft Cell or Marilyn Manson, most people don't know Gloria did it first. I like her version.

  • "And you´ll think love is to pray,

But I'm sorry I don't pray that way."

    ... i love this song!!!!

  • @vibe1033 play!?

  • Grand Theft Auto San Andreas

  • ROCK'N'ROLL!!!!!!!!!! im 19 and i fucking live off this music!

  • Reminds me of the MAD MEN theme.

  • @xzyza2000 That Mad Men theme is the instrumental of the Aceyalone tune "A Beautiful Mine" from his album Magnificent City which he made with DJ/Producer RJD2.

  • Pussycat Dolls have more views than Gloria Jones? What's going on there then?

  • fantastica!!!!

  • I stumbled on this ORIGINAL version while at a gas station in Los Angeles several years ago. I was floored that Soft Cell remade it because I like Soft Cell's version better!

  • Marilyn covered this? Woah...

  • so.. this is it.. the original version. thought the soft cell was the one. and btw, marilyn mansons cover was a crap.

  • @TheYameister true story

  • @TheYameister My thoughts exactly ^^ Don't you just adore this song so much though

  • @SuperAznStalker i love the song but still, the new wave beat of soft cell gave LIFE of this song. my opinion only. :)

  • The best version !

  • This may be the very first song written about being in a toxic relationship with a narcissist, a type of person tainted to the core and completely lacking empathy. Gloria really brings home the message of someone who's been through it all and can't take anymore. Beautiful!

  • Always wondered what my mom ( who graduated from high school in 1963) meant when she said the Soft Cell version wasn't the firs one she'd heard. This is great! Really like Ms. Jones voice and style.

  • Marilyn mansons version is my favorite :D

  • @tralalalaa123 i perfer soft cell's

  • @Thepinkfloydmaster everyone has a different oppinion C:

  • soft cell version is better

  • @tomas19924 philistine

  • Didn't realize it at first, but it sounds like the Fine Young Cannibals borrowed from Gloria when they wrote "Good Thing."

  • @GMan6254048 OMG! I totally hear it!

  • manson's version's superb

  • personally I loved soft cell's version the most.. it's the first I've heard... but I wanted to hear the main version... it's so 60's, not that it's bad but it's different!

  • Imelda May's version makes justice to Gloria's. You have to give it a try :)

  • I know genius when I see it. Brilliant Song...and Brilliant video work demonstrating the evils of corporatism, consumerism, the military-industrial complex, and the corrupting power of money.

  • Still WORLDS better than Marilyn Manson's version. xD

And I'm (as I'm sure most people are) used to the Soft Cell version.

  • @BasisOfKool Right?THis song kicks ass.

  • @SuperMrYugioh Lol It totally does!

  • perfekt....

  • Master Sounds FM in GTA San Andreas!

    Yay! :D

    I love this song!

  • Holy! This is great. I love this song, but why does this version never get played?

  • How many people have done a cover of this song?

  • @75353866 Too many! But it still a great song even with different style like Soft Cell and Marilyn Manson.

  • Well this is the version I hear last, and I think it's the best by far!!

  • 87 people have tainted love for great music.

  • i just love this song

  • It's nice to see Ed Cobb get credit for writing this song; and Jones for singing the original.

  • this version is BEST .. :D

  • I still prefer Marilyn Manson's cover version

  • How can the Pussycat dolls version get nearly twice as many hits as this fantastic version!!! Aaaaargh!

  • Damn, I actually like this better than the Soft Cell cover. I can't believe I just found out about this.

  • gta san andreas right?

  • i like soft cells better butt this is good!

  • @killerguy771 No way

  • Actually I first heard Soft cell, and being that I like 80's styled music more of course I would like the version more, but Im not going to hate on the original! Where would we be with out originals! You can have all the 80's epicness you want, but if there isnt originality to add the epicness from to create epic epicness.... Well, you just dont have the 80's.

  • first heard this on patrick mechlers deathwish part and was thinking to myself "thats a nice cover of that" and i look it up here and its the original. have to say i think its the best version (as with most things original is best) but i like the other two aswell

  • 0:42 I swear she says, "take my beer and that's not living".

  • Finally, Scorpions made an excellent cover of this Song in their last album!

  • @Georgios00 ABSOLUTELY!!!

  • @Georgios00

    Scorpions should stay retired !!

  • @bpkrieg the only thing that will stay retired, is your brain!

  • @Georgios00 Yeah, the Scorpions version is awesome. It's so much better than that shitty Marilyn Manson cover

  • Heard this on Skins series 3, Naomi's episode :D

  • Best version, hands down. Soft Cell maimed the lyrics to suit a male singer and the other versions I know never really managed to capture the song's "soul" so to speak.

  • i got here from saftey dance by Men without hats

  • @YourResource2 HA! Do the Safety Dance! Which is apparently making an awkward s jerking motion with your arms! :) Good tunes :)

  • Ha I grew up on the Soft Cell version, I feel like I've been cheated. Why do they never play this? I'm not knocking Soft Cell, they did good, but you can't argue with this.

  • @Hazeon23 You're so right! This one is much better!

  • @Hazeon23 Agreed - this version is awesome and Gloria had a great voice. But as to why it's not played so often, I reckon there are a lot of DJs who are Marc Bolan fans who've never forgiven her for her poor driving skills!

  • @Hazeon23 thank you for saying that :)

  • @Hazeon23 same here - just found it myself

  • @Hazeon23 i feel the same way...although the Soft Cell version is a classic i have never heard this one before and its just as good (if not better)

  • @Hazeon23 What can I say... I grew up on Marylin Manson's version! :/

  • @Hazeon23 I knew the original because my brother was into Northern Soul. Soft Cell were better with their emo stuff which didn't sell as well.

  • @Hazeon23

I agree, i just found this version and it rocks :)

  • As much as I like the Soft Cell version, this is my favourite. The reason is that Marc Almond sounds like the victor in this scenario. He's tired but coming out on top, and it's almost seen in retrospect. Gloria Jones' version sounds like she's the victim, and is getting more and more desperate while not seeing a way out of it, yet fights back. Kind of like a spiritual predecessor to the Supremes' "Keep Me Hangin' On".

  • Ah, when music about love could be none emo.

  • i just took the time out to here all different covers of this song. this is definitely the best one.

  • this was very foward for its time

  • Didn't know this wasn't a Softcell original.

Prefer the Eighties version but this is good too cos it's upbeat and has the Austin Powers vibe.

  • it's kind of strange that this version got less viewed than pussicat doll's one... i love original music version cause it's cause of those one that we have others

  • Ohh ! I f'ing love the original ;D

  • Northern Soul classic!

  • This is soul at its most powerful even the intro makes you want to get up and dance.. love it .. love it ... love it.

  • I like this version best.

  • this is great but sorry i love marc almonds voice much more..x

  • the lyrics in this seem be different and make more sense than the soft cell ones, cool version

  • Reagan is a shit.

  • @Jaeger7793 I know eh?! I like em both very much.

  • love the slideshow clip :)

  • I didn't know Soft Cell's version was a cover. I'm not sure which one I like better!

  • <3!!!

  • I had this song stuck in my head, so i decided to listen to it :)

Soft Cell's version is also cool

Marilyn Manson's version is dog shit

  • @TheTKCreborn Just because you don't like Marilyn Manson version you can't say it's shit. Each version of a song it's obviously diferent and each person loves diferent kinds of music.... for me, MM version is the best!

  • The Imelda May version took me back to the Soft Cell version which I know and love. From there I discovered this original. Three very different versions of a great song. All of them good.

  • I knew this was originally a woman's song. I could just sense it. this song just didn't seem like a song men would sing. As a woman who has suffered from a "tainted love" that was given to her this was the song my heart sang once I left him. Guys are always singing player's anthems. Women are always singing about how they escaped the jerk who hurt them.... And warning other women to not make the same mistake. It's a pattern that goes way back into history.

  • @BlueNeko1 That's your own experience. Plenty of women, too, are "players" who've hurt and taken advantage of men. I love this original version, but switch the pronouns and it works equally well for a male singer.

  • @BoyGenteel Yes, but men sing a different kind of song than this one when they are hurt. You can hear it. I'm just saying that the two different sexes express themselves in very different ways. I wasn't trying to sugest that only women get used or hurt.

  • @BlueNeko1 You obviously don't listen to a lot of r&b, if you think guys are always singing player's anthems.

  • Soft Cell Cover Is Better But The Original Is Good To

  • Fine Young Cannibals - Good Thing. I know where they were coming from now.

  • This song is just over all badass, but ill have to say Manson is my fav cover....but this being the first time i ever heard the original (what with thinking Soft Cell was the original) I LOVES this version

  • I first heard this on the radio around the time when soft Cell had their number one (30 years ago to this month, weirdly enough). I love it.

  • I don't care who sings it, Tainted Love is such a great song it works anywhere :-)

  • This song was on friends

  • @maisarox what? which episode?

  • Soft Cell Tainted Love extended origunal mix, two nothern american soul tracks put together one after the other. Pussycats have nothing on this It's second only to the Gloria Jones original,

    watch?v=HQWWmcbrBiw

  • Yes yes the original .-)

  • Love your choice of photographs.

  • I love this song and her voice is absolutely beautiful

  • The original and still the best!

  • She's got a beautiful voice. :)

  • way ahead of her time

  • The only cover I can think of that was better than the original was Jimi doing Bob's All Along the Watchtower ;)

  • The original and the best! imho

    82 soft cell fans??

  • How could 82 people not like this?

  • I prefer Soft cell's cover to be honest.

  • once again, the original is better than the remade version.

  • Wow. I grew up loving Soft Cell's TL, but just heard this for the first time today. Freakin' Lightening. The Original is always better.

  • To think I liked PCD's version, Gloria Jones is way more awesome!

  • I can see where Imelda May got her arrangement from-another excellent interpretation of this tune.

  • I think all 3 versions are great to that artist. Marilyn Manson just took the viseo to another level. But like I said It is the artist that make the music and all three songs are good

  • First time I've ever heard this version! VERY good!

  • Nice video!!!!

  • I love this song so much and I how it evolved till the marilyn manson version. A timeless classic that is still popular after nearly a half century!

  • анх цацагдахдаа Billboard-ын 67-оос шууд 1-р байранд орж байсан Rihanna-ын SOS (2006) дууны эх хувилбар sample нь. Soft Cell (1981) бас cover хийж дуулж байсан

  • I knew of the soft cell version and the later rhianna SOS versions but I Had no idea it was older. Goes to show that a good song transcends eras and genres. I love when I go on these little music history searches and find unexpected origins. Gloria Jones should be very proud.

  • This is the original version, recorded first by Gloria Jones.

It is loved by many, just as other cover versions are loved by their fans. Let's respect each other by respecting each others' favorites. Live and let live.

  • @funknroll The song was written by Ed Cobb (Standells manager) for The Standells but they split up before they could record the song. You can read this in the Standells history. It is not know if they ever played the song live or in rehearsal

  • @funknroll I personally love both versions.

  • Gloria Jones to Marlyn Manson you couldnt write it in a soap opera what next patsy cline to eminem

  • Hard to believe this song didn't become a big hit in Gloria's home country while it topped the charts elsewhere.

This should have been a huge hit in the 'States!

  • I love both this and MM's version, fantastic song. :)

  • me too

  • Wow, I thought this was originally by Soft Cell, I feel like an idiot :(

  • @undertheapi same here lol prolly most of the ppl viewing this vid felt like idiots too lmao

  • @undertheapi

Makes two of us. I had no idea.

  • A good song is a good song! Period! No matter who does it (as long as a bit of talent is involved) . U know what I mean?

  • the best version by far awesome KTF :)

  • Mark Almond sings it the same way that Gloria Jones sings it vocally there really is no cover expect with electronics

  • Original is always better ;)

  • @WannaBe0007 Not so... Willie Nelson wrote and first sang 'Crazy' but it's Patsy Cline who made it a classic.

  • @WannaBe0007 What about Animals' House of the rising sun, and Hendrix's All Along~? :P

  • @Cerpth exactly...some covers r so much better...I will always love u by W Houston to name another

  • @WannaBe0007 WHAT THE FUCK?

FROM WHOM, WHEN NOT GLORIA JONES, "YOUR ORIGINAL" IS?

soft cell? nope ~20 years difference

marylin manson? nope, ~40 years ;)

the version of gloria jones is the original and the best one ;)

  • i luv it! lol wow????? i never knew??? i like it anyways :)

  • There's been loads of talk about the different versions of this song, but I haven't heard anyone mention Imelda May's version... that's my favourite. I've listened to them all (or at least, all I could find) because I just love the song, and Imelda's has the most energy out of all of them, in my opinion. A close second is this one though. Maybe it's just that I think the song is better when a woman sings it...

  • @doylerdude193

I think it's a lot more powerful with a female singer, too. I personally had never heard of Imelda May until now, so I listened to the cover (live at Jools Holland) and listened to another single (Psycho.) I think I'm about to be hooked. I've been listening to a lot of Stray Cats, Tears for Fears, and Squeeze recently, so Imelda May may become my new favorite band. Thank you.

  • Northern Soul classic

  • Soft Cell and Manson made big hits out of what this lady did on her own nearly 50 years ago.

  • i love this and soft cells version

  • I had originally heard the Soft Cell version on a rock radio station in real life, and then I heard this version on the Master Sounds radio station in GTA: San Andreas, and I thought "This sounds just like that song I've heard on the radio. Is that version a cover of this?"

  • Really cool song. And until recently I thought Soft Cell's version was the original.

Then GTA San Andreas taught me otherwise.

  • alll are good

but the best is marilyn manson

  • I think the point it´s more up on claiming respect than apologizing. Poors those who don´t know anything about Gloria Jones and her heritage

  • Well Marc Bolan knew sexiness when he met Gloria...She Rocked...and so did Marc.. :)

  • I must confess I thought Soft Cell created it until tonight. I liked this 80's song despite it's coldness. But this original version is AWESOME !!! Thinking this song is from 1964 : it's so modern. And hot !!

  • This and MM version are the best imo. :) Soft Cell was okay-ish. Pussycat Dolls just ruined it.

  • Marilyn Manson just ruins every song for me.

  • i like soft cell's version way better!!!!!!

  • BTW, I don't mind Marilyn Manson. I just don't like his cover of Tainted Love. He/his band performs their stuff well and he even does some covers okay, just not this one.

  • Comment removed

  • OMG I like 3 out of the 4 versions (this one's included). There's a Swing version of this song by Marc Almond which sounds pretty awesome. The 4th version (Marilyn Manson's) I can't get into and believe me I tried.

  • This is the best version. Fucking great.
