As much as I like the Soft Cell version, this is my favourite. The reason is that Marc Almond sounds like the victor in this scenario. He's tired but coming out on top, and it's almost seen in retrospect. Gloria Jones' version sounds like she's the victim, and is getting more and more desperate while not seeing a way out of it, yet fights back. Kind of like a spiritual predecessor to the Supremes' "Keep Me Hangin' On".

I knew this was originally a woman's song. I could just sense it. this song just didn't seem like a song men would sing. As a woman who has suffered from a "tainted love" that was given to her this was the song my heart sang once I left him. Guys are always singing player's anthems. Women are always singing about how they escaped the jerk who hurt them.... And warning other women to not make the same mistake. It's a pattern that goes way back into history.

I've listened to them all (or at least, all I could find) because I just love the song, and Imelda's has the most energy out of all of them, in my opinion. A close second is this one though. I personally had never heard of Imelda May until now, so I listened to the cover (live at Jools Holland) and listened to another single (Psycho.) I think I'm about to be hooked.
