  • Hey, how many inches is this one? Did you get it off line? I recognise the patterns??

  • @joburgess

This is an 18" Walton's (I believe that is the brand) My wife got it for me for a gift from a local store, but I see them on eBay all the time. Nice, simple drum, I recommend it.

  • Nicely done, Lance!

  • Now I don't want to play irish drum for marching band...:(

  • If either of our two bodhren players can handle what you lay down then- credit where credit is due - absolutely.

  • After some time searching, I was so glad to have found you and this recording. The tempo is bang on perfect for what I have been looking for to accompany an old hymn: King of Glory King of Peace" to the tune of Gwalchami. Som organ versions I have heard seem to have the life drained out of them. But what you play - perfect! Thanks

  • @DukeVipperman1: well, all I ask is that if you give me credit, and if you make a bunch of cash form it...throw some my way! :) I'd be interested in hearing what you make of it, though...

  • He may not pronounce it right, but he sure knows how to play it right.

  • its a shame that the world is in a position where proper English is a thing of the past

  • he pronounced it correctly, growing up in Newfoundland that's the way you say it

  • @HAOLEBUDDAH jus cause thats how you newfies say doesnt mean its correct. most of you dont speak proper english anyhow

  • Lance, you can play my Bodhran any day!!!!!! Cindy

  • Bravo :)

  • awesome..

  • very very cool. i love this type of drum. And, i never really paid attention to the technique before but it looks like he's using his left hand almost as much as his forward hand.

  • my father has one and he just randomly starts playing it in the middle of the night!

  • Very kickass!

  • i like how you can see your hand moving behidn the head. very cool

  • Who cares how he pronounces it. I'm happy to listen and look how he plays it!

  • Very nice work. my sixth time checking this vid out :)

  • very well done my bro can play it too

  • Comment removed

  • @paddylennon

Get in line with the rest of the pronunciation hounds.

  • at first i was leik "GAY VOICE" then i was like "im gay i cant play like him"

  • You`re evidently a professional player, well done! : )

  • Well played. Sounds great.

  • Fan freakin’ tastic

It’s nice to hear someone play the Bodhran that well (wish I could do that)

And to be honest I had no idea that’s how you spelled it... Learned something new today, thanks

  • This is a brilliant demonstration, Lance. Thanks for putting up the video :)

  • @rayrayq93

He pronounces it with a Northern Irish accent - doesn't mean it's wrong, just different.

  • be still my heart.. That was awesome!!! Gives me something to aspire to...

  • Wow Srsly he rocks! :D

  • That was great! I hope you post a longer video of your playing.

  • I am finding I keep getting blisters. I am waiting for my thumb to develop a callous but I wonder if im not playing it right

  • @sweetjemimer: Blisters are part of the fun!

  • thank you for your fantastic music! you've inspired me to go and buy one of these. i've been looking for this kind of sound for a while to add to my instrument collection!

    much love from australia :)

  • God he cant even pronounce the name of the instrument he's playing :P

  • @rayrayq93: I know!! I need to be stopped immediately. :)

  • @mrpants1971 At least your aware of it :)

  • @mrpants1971 According to Wikipedia, it's pronounced either like "Boh-rahn" or "Bow-rahn" -- the 'oh' part is like in so.

  • @rayrayq93 I know what you mean. A person should not be that good on an instrument, and taken seriously if he can't say the name of it. Names are far more important that skill.

  • awesome!

  • Been thinking of getting one of these. Think I'd be good to bust out at a gig rather than just playing my kit or bongos all the time. Had and Irish friend that had one, they look really fun to play.

  • i held one for the first time at the weekend and the dude from the shop said i was a natural bt u have to have good wrist movements lol I love the Bodhran its Awesome!!!

  • enjoy your arthur-itis "Mr Pants"

  • Great video, the backlight really shows the work that the left hand is doing, fair play to you!!

  • Awesome!! I have a bodhran myself and I love playing it. I'm still getting used to changing the pitch and whatnot with the other hand.

  • that's hot. you're hot. And i love that the skin is backlit so you can see your other hand. as a photographer, I appreciate those things....

  • ya u can play it pity u cant pronounce the name of the fucking drum

  • @eigetjames Yer damn right I can play it...it's a pity you haven't any sense.

  • @mrpants1971 here gobshite.....im Irish i know how to pronounce a native instrument

  • @mrpants1971

bodhrán traditionally pronounced "Bau Raun"jackass! pitty i havent any sense? im irish i think id know both how to play it and pronounce it did you buy that in a gift shop in dublin while tracing your ancestry ??

  • @eigetjames: I've never been to your homeland and yet I still smoke your ass on your own native instrument. I hope if I ever do go there, I don't have the displeasure of meeting you. You haven't the sense to realize that the person sitting next you may say words with a different dialect than you do. Have fun ya gobshite.

  • gobshite.....really im not the one who has obviously spent time to learn something and yet didnt take the time to learn how to say it correctly. i understand that words can be pronounced differently world wide but names however are not...its either pronounced correctly or incorrectly....that was my point from the very begining....u have been coming at me with this no sense thing twice now.....like u cant tell me im wrong on the pronunciation the word is from the Irish language,,,,,,

  • @eigetjames:

So...you said this above, "im irish i think id know both how to play it"

    So...let's hear it smart guy!

Let's hear you play the drum. If you can't...shut the front door.

  • @mrpants1971 ur so full of shit.....your wrong....get over it its not about whether u can play it or not. just pronounce it corectly

  • @mrpants1971 ur so full of shit.....your wrong....get over it its not about whether u can play it or not. just pronounce it correctly

  • You're great, really!

I'm thinking about playing the bodhran...is it difficult?

  • @Dou8me It is difficult, at first. After you get the initial motion of getting your wrist very loose, it comes together rather quickly. Thanks for watching.

  • @mrpants1971 I've started like a month ago and now the movements come quite naturally C: it's fantastic

  • @Dou8me Awesome! You should put up a vid when you have a chance. Great dancing, by the way. :)

  • @mrpants1971 Many thanks!More video coming soon C: Also, I'll make something with my bodhran as soon as I can ;)

  • @mrpants1971 Done! C: Whenever you can, watch it and let me know!^_^

  • SWEET! and you're super sexy too!

  • @Siachris Quote! *-*

  • pretty-damn-good

  • You can play the Bodhran good.

  • wow! that is good, my dad got me a bodhran drum and there is no way ill be good enought to play that well! oh well i have my snare drumsticks and that should be enough to practice my solo that i am going to play for solo and onsomble at my school

  • sweet

  • My Dad is from the east coast of Canada and lots of music there has this type of drum in it. I LOVE IT! I like your accent too LOL

  • @slsoxwewssd

    That is awesome...thanks!

  • nice!

  • u are fairly gud do ..

  • CLEARLY putin on a irish accent, sounds like ur a fukin leprecon.

  • A man can't have a little fun without someone pissin on his parade? :)

  • @mrpants1971

Some people piss into the wind and some just piss their pants! Then there are people who just are not socialized! :)

Very nice playing! Do you have a group that you play with?

  • @mrpants1971 this is great. There isn't nearly enough of the bodhran in modern music.

  • The emphasis is depending on which part of Ireland ur from in Sligo its pronounced.... BoowRON ... so as i said it is depending on where ur from in Eire ur from my friend from Wicklow would emphasise the Ron,.....

  • i work in a music shop in cork in ireland and an american guy came in one day aking if we sold BOD-HORNS!!!! I nearly shat myself laughing!!!!!

  • Excellent!! Makes you want to dance. :)

  • very nice playing! And as far as the pronunciation goes, who care whose grandparents and mum and da are from? Its still a bodhran and it's still as Irish as Arthur Guinness himself. Beannacht Dé leat!

  • it's pronounced bow-RON with the emphasis on ron...you have really good rhythm =]

  • 'Fraid not... Empahsis on "Bow". Born and raised in Ireland and I never heard the emphasis on "ron". Any Irish native will emphasis the first syllable on Bodhran just as on other gaelic words... (Ta)im i mo (cho)naig in (Eir)inn.

  • my mum's native irish and she says it with the emphasis on "ron"...she's from wicklow. my grandma is from cork and i think i remember she says it with the emphasis on "bow". my grandad, is from waterford, but i don't know how he says it. either it's different with the different dialects throughout ireland, or my mum's lost her touch! lol

  • Very great,...=)

  • wow.

  • i luv the bodhran every trad session needs one

  • Well done !

  • john bonham style on the bodhran , excelent .

  • you do awesome!! loved it!!

  • Lance Reid, you did a fine job introducing and demonstrating this instrument! Thank you for sharing!!! You are a fine example of a Celtic man too! Thanks !

  • great playing AND awesome camera shot with the light behind the bodhran, so we can see your left hand moving too. i wish other people did that in their videos too . . .

  • Christ. I've just started giving the bodhran a go, didn't even know playing like this was possible

  • I love this kind of drum!!!! How do you pronounce Bodhran?

  • the d is silent

  • Thank you!

  • oh aye an the "a" sounds like "o" almost

    i think anyway

  • Thank you, so it sounds like "boron", I suppose.

  • ryhmes with cow - gone!

  • "Bow" as in bending rather than a pretty pink bow, with a bit more of an a than an o, and then "Ron" or "ran"

    Bow-ron.

  • Maybe someday I can play like that! Watching you teaches a lot.

  • Dude, that takes some insane talent!! Nice work! How long have you been playing?

  • your really good!

  • Ok, this was cool to see backlit, to see what your left hand is doing. Is that merely working like a deadening thing, or is it changing the pitch? (I've got a stuffed up head and my ears aren't too good to discern at the moment.)

I would guess hitting closer to the rim is higher pitched than the middle, but are you also changing the pitch by tightening the drum head with your hand, shortening the vibration area?

    Very cool to see this.

  • Thanks!

Yep, you're right, my left hand is changing the pitch of the drum in some parts, but also deadening and opening the head for resonance.

    Lance

  • This is proper bodhran playing - I prefer this to the fashionable top-end playing

  • Thanks for listening!

  • AWESOME! i LOVE irish music! that was amazing, ur reallyyyyy good!

  • Thank you!

  • Wow... that my friend was completely incredible... I've never seen any drumming that beautiful in my entire life... keep it up

  • I played drums before, but the Bodhran drums require a whole new type of wrist flexibility which looks very difficult to master. The sounds of Bodhran drums is very nice!

  • Well done!! I got learn to play me some of thems

  • Nice! I'd like to learn how to play the Bodhran. How would I go about it??

  • powerful sticking...thanks

  • I have a friend that is a near expert on Irish whistles and flutes, as well as an adept piper, though only on Northumbrian pipes, but he is trying to learn Uilleann pipes. You two would be great together jamming

  • Thanks for sharing, I would like to learn to play this but no lessons that I can find here in the great white north of canada!

  • Very inspiring video!

  • wow

  • its great, and its not as easy as it looks!well done,it made my day!

  • mr pants, 1stly, excellent! 2ndly, can one play the bodhran on lap or horizontal on a stand? or the way u demonstrated only ~Newbie

  • Firstly, thank you! Secondly, I think horizontally on the lap it might limit some of the "stuff" your non-stick hand is doing. I'm sure it would work fine on a stand also, I like it next to me, I can control it a bit more.

However, I never discourage trying something new, you never know what may work best for you.

    Tak!

    Lants

  • You can also balance it on your hip with the rim tucked slightly under your arm (almost like the bellows of uilleann pipes). This works best with larger bodhrans, but is nice because it allows you to walk and play at the same time and leaves your back hand free to maneuver. Slainte

  • Sorry, this was meant as a response to KKGMoonChild7's question

  • Awesome, either way, thanks for the tip!

    Lants

  • wow your AMAZING!!!!! i want some kids at my college to play the bodhran for our folk band but no such luck, you AWESOME!!! :)

  • good stuff

  • Exellent ! I'm playing the Bodhran since a year... But I'm really far to this ! Bravo !

  • Thats my uncle!!!!!

  • check out vid " Punjabi Wedding 2 " Panjabis Scottish wedding band, lol

  • Its a shame young Irish don't do with the bodhran what Panjabis have done with the Indian dhol. Bhangra djs have created a modern updated version of their parents traditional music. At weddings old and young party alike to the sounds of the dj's tunes. They've created a complete new sound that creates strong ethnic identities. Check out classic Gurdas Mann or modern Jazzy B or Juggy D.

  • YOu know thats my uncle your talkin about

  • WAY outta sync. but still awesome!! i gotta get me 1 of those

  • I know! Isn't the sync thing weird? Is that because it wazs recorded on my camera I wonder? Anyhoo, thanks for the comment!

  • your welcome. im getting a Bodhran for my birthday :) which is in a little less than a month. i cant wait :)

  • good stuff a reel rhythem is the nicest bodhran style of playing

  • Excellant. Love the bodhran...wish it was played up more in general

  • uv not got ur clipping quite write but ceep it up.

  • That was really great! And your bodhran is beautiful :)

  • Holy crap, I play the fiddle, which they say is the hardest instrument...I beg to differ! That was amazing!

  • Very nice! beautiful drum also.

  • Nice job. Last name Reed? Read? Reid? I share one of those wi ya...if I hear correctly. Walton's drum? Non tuneable? How do you fair wi the atmosphere?

  • Hello Thomdrum,

Yep it's a non-tuneable Walton's...I like it a lot...I like the variety with the weather. I just splash a little water on there if it get's too tight.

    Lance Reed
